Those were the days, the 70s were utopian compared with today's hell on earth. When the VFL was still our game, of cold pies and warm beer and local grounds where the community could converge and take out their frustrations on one another. The old dears would arrive early with their knitting to watch the seconds and relentlessly abuse the umpires warming up for the main game. The days when footballers were footballers first and athletes went to athletic clubs where they belonged. The biffs and melees on the ground were only exceeded by those in the crowd and the crowd and players. You can't get more Australian than that. Trial by video has destroyed Australian culture, and is the origins of the police surveillance state today.

In regard to "Mark of the Day", that one mark by Chris Mew was very good, I thought, while Jim Jess was also good; as for the Essendon v. Fitzroy, the second mark by Reaves was worthy of "Mark of the Day".

Leon Baker was in the top couple on the ground in 4 successive grand finals - 82 & 83 at Swan Districts and 84 & 85 at the Bombers.
