Kevin Meyer Honestly, it's the future of both codes internationally if they would get over certain issues and export this game ruthlessly to all corners of the globe. There are so many expats that play both codes in every land, America particularly and square fields are much more common worldwide. Both leagues would do well to turn this game into a more competitive version of IRB sevens, IMO.
@stoney71458 жыл бұрын
Square fields,but much smaller than a gaa pitch.A GAA pitch.You could put too soccer pitchs side by side.The AFL promotes aussie rules and thts the game they want played internationally not this bastard game.The GAA has two sports which they want to promote not this game.Promoting this game is only going to confuse people it will not promote the games.People will not want to play gaelic or aussie rules ,but this hybrid instead which is fine,but its not what these associations are for.The problem for the GAA is two fold is it can only do it with football not hurling so hurling would be forgotten about second the players would have to be full time if they are going to play abroad and theGAA is amateur and prides itself on being amateur

Fair play to the Aussies, put out something close to their best side and it showed in their interplay. Good skills and space appreciation and most importantly discipline, The fitness levels are the key though Pro's Vs Amatuers should always only be one winner. The GAA lads have come on light years in terms of their fitness levels, but there's a ceiling when you have day jobs that take priority and you can see it in the body shapes of the players form both sides.. IR is one of those things where if it's allowed to die off we'll only really appreciate it's value when it's gone. Really needs to be a three game series though, so teams can get into it....
@ronanbyrne74869 жыл бұрын
Our boys would adapt to a sherrin handy enough I believe, most Irish young lads are multidisciplinary in that they play a wide variety of sports into teenage years so a lot would have rugby backgrounds as well (given their sizes mainly as backs). Yep I know larger footie, but not too dissimilar in kicking actions nowadays (a lot players use Aussie Rule kicking style at every level now). I think we've seen that with the AFL Irish imports, it's not the footie that is the major adjustment it's changing to a professional mindset where your sport is your job and the discipline's required. Fitness/Stamina is the major issue at IR level for us though, three weeks together pre matches is not enough to make up the gap. The main barrier 'amateurism' is a bastion of the GAA, so would need a fundamental change in attitude at the top level of Gaelic Games to see that happen. Would love to see it happen, but there are major potential downsides to that happening. I don't know how familiar you are with GAA structure in Ireland. Basically kids play at school, for local clubs, then their native county (of which there are 32 in Island of Ireland). Even in the amateur era there are dominant counties in both Gaelic Football and Hurling. If the game went professional then these counties would continue to dominate and also demand most of the revenue which over time would mean the collapse of the games in weaker counties.
@ronanbyrne74869 жыл бұрын
So is the top division of that like the third tier of Rules? AFL, VFL and then VAFA...
@stoney71459 жыл бұрын
+Ronan Byrne Professionalism on a full time basis is a non runner there isn't the money.Take your average county board with an average budget of 1million they would have to pay the average industrial wage to a squad of 25 players of 40000 euro so there entire budget would have to go on paying the players.Only 4 counties at most could do this.Yes you could have semi professionalism and a match fee for the all ireland finals.You have dual counties to consider as well not even dublin could field professional teams in football and hurling

If the ball goes into the net (like the soccer goal) its 6 points and is called a "goal". If it goes over the crossbar (the goal) with the net but between the 2 middle poles, its 3 points and is called an "over". If it goes between the outer and inner poles on both sides its 1 point and is called a "behind". Anything outside of the those poles is worth nothing and is called a "wide"

+Dimp 992 International Rules Football (a.k.a. Compromise Rules Football). It's a combination of Gaelic Football and Australian Football, and is only played once a year (between an Irish team which usually play Gaelic and an Australian team which usually play AFL), so none of the players are that familiar with the game. It's an oddity for both teams, but they're coming to it from different directions and have different strengths.

Can someone please explain these rules
@stoney71458 жыл бұрын
Because nobody knows its a hybrid sport of gaelic and australian football unless you are familiar with one of these its hard to explain it.I recommend looking at gaelic irish football rules explained by ninh ly and his australian football video.Basically the ball is a gaelicfootball(not soccer) the field is gaelic the goal posts are basically gaelic ,but they are two extra posts there aussie.The tackle is aussie the mark is aussie the playing time is a mixture of the two.They are a few other rules from neither code.Handling rules are mostly aussie and travelling rules are both.They change the rules quite often
@DBB3143 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't a soccer goalkeeper be better in this scenario - surely Matt Ryan should be selected if available or the best aussie keeper

Most of the Australian squad finished AFL 3 months ago and have been overseas on 'end of year' rec leave. The Australians came together one week before this game with many of them never used a round ball before. This is better than AFL… is it concerning. No! We have a great game in this game and other countries would play. I say move afl towards this.
