From BBC's The Hottest Place on Earth with the team in Ethiopia
Amazing volcanic discovery!
This scene shows Earth scientist Dougal Jerram at the extraordinary volcanic activity of the region and the part it plays in the bigger geological picture of the Rift Valley. Here on this break off expedition they look for and discover the strangest volcano in the world, where the ground opened up during an earthquake creating an explosion known as the Dabbahu fissure.

The mask has positive pressure, it losing a bit of the face seal would have just caused air to blow out the sides and used the air in the tank up quicker. The detector for H2S went off a 10ppm, the max allowable for 8 hour exposure. I worked as a H2S safety specialist for 17 years in the Canadian oilfield.

It would be so cool to see what types of minerals were brought to the surface. Could you imagine when that happened and was spewing magma and swallowing up camels and goats? Nah the GC was formed by huge glacial melt water floods carving out the land over multiple ice ages. YOu would be amazed at how destructive they can be to the right geology with enough time. The English Channel between southern England and France/Germany used to be a solid landmass too but the same fate happened to it - 20 miles worth of erosion taking it down combined with isostatic rebound causing the entirety of Britain to dip south causing southern England to submerge.

H2S gas odour is detected by the nose at very very low levels 0.008ppm to 0.13ppm (parts per million); from 100ppm you start to suffer from olfactory fatigue, and you cease to be able to smell it from 150ppm at which point you really should be getting out, but if you can't smell it then you don't appreciate the danger you're in. Knowing SO2 and H2S are heavier than air and seeing that this is an active fissure they took all the necessary precautions, however you have have to ask yourself; would it not have been safer just to lower some test kit, cameras, surveying gear and gas analysers down into the whole first. You could get some useful info without putting lives at greater risk. Just asking. Luckily no-one harmed.

It seems so ubiquitous I suspect that without the fake drama the people who control the purse strings wouldn't let the program be made in the first place. The BBC is paid by licence fee. This should allow it to produce content without concern about viewing figures. But the introduction of increasing 'market discipline' and accusations of 'elitism' from the political extremes has been steadily eroding the beeb.

Splitting Africa is the work of tectonic plates. It'll take up to 50 million years before it gets done.

Oh no, the earth is moving! They do realize that the Continents are basically floating islands that are constantly moving? This is NOT new. sence the beginning of time, thid dynamic earth has been doing this. We shouldnt be suprised nor should we panic.
@JackHaveman52
@JackHaveman52 6 жыл бұрын
No one is panicking, at least no one that has any sense. This is an excellent example of plate movement that isn't seen that often this vividly. If can be dangerous because of the gases emitted and the tremors that are continuously being felt along the fault. It's going to takes an incredibly long time before the split becomes that large that the ocean water starts to fill it. Of course they realise that the earth in motion. They're geologists. It's geology 101.

Probably due to fracking for oil and draining well waters and drilling for oil and filling empty wells with a different substances other than what was drawn out it weakens our crust on witch we live on as well as moving tons of of weight like rock and dirt and water oil ect from one place to onther upsets the balance of witch our globe spins on its axis that can explain why there stress fractures in the earths crust 😔 its all apart of balance and we have been offsetting that balance for years cause and effect .... Knowledge for though

It’s so exciting as a so Somali to hear our region is separating from Abyssinia! The Somali people decided to distant themselves from Abyssinian invasions and imperial ambitions for centuries now the earth itself wants to move away from Abyssinia/Ethiopia I wish it happened in so fast and so far. Every Somali knows someone from his her family member who Ethiopians have killed.

Endalk Mekuria what are you talking about Somalia existed longer than Ethiopia what are you talking about? Ethiopia was created by the British and Swedish and installed puppet haila selassie in fact the west the white people created Ethiopia to contain Islam and Somalia without Somalia the white people have no use for Ethiopia and probably they would enslave the locals. They need Ethiopia as soldiers in Somalia since Somalia have been resisting them since the beginning of time. What’s there in Ethiopia to be jealous of ? Famine? Atrocious regime that’s kills, tortures, mains and doesn’t allow any form of personal freedom? As a Somali we feel like throwing up when we hear Ethiopia and it’s not because of the civilians but because of the types of regimes the Abyssinian culture produces. Ethiopian regimes are the worst we hate them because the culture is not good. Ethiopia is thousands behind the rest of humanity you guys still eat raw meat 🥩 like animals like hyenas, you even give all of us bad name by eating raw meat 🥩 cook the god damn food and act like normal human beings not like beasts and you also guys have no mercy nor compassion the way you kill, displace, torture Somalis in Ogaden no matter how you look at it you guys have more in common with animals than humans so never say anything is jealous of you because you have nothing. We Somalis don’t have much but at least we are not beast like barbarians like you and also we are not spies for anyone unlike all of you who are spies for your atrocious regime. Every Ethiopian is a spy for the regime.

Amelia Van Der Veere but Abyssinia is an empire and all its existence it wanted to swallow and occupy the whole region with pure force and brutality Abyssinia doesn’t have boundaries it constantly wants to expand and colonize everyone else there’s no cooperation and and brotherhood in that ask the people of Ogaden ask the Oromo people and the afar ask the Somali and the Eritreans ask benushangul and all those nations I listed don’t have problem with the rest but Abyssinians hebesha want to colonize everyone else I know many hebesha civilians don’t know the crimes their regimes commit against other nations because the people are not free to or know real information in Ethiopia the oppression is extreme all East Africa needs to be liberated from Ethiopian regime. Now I know what the Ethiopian regimes have been committing genocide against Somali people but it still is not excusable. The Ethiopian regimes are beholden to their western “donors” so they must kill anybody the west wants dead but instead they should stand for justice like Eritrea and say we are not serving you with your aggression and transgressions but instead they willingly accept to destroy other nations their “brothers” in serving the western masters I mean “donors”
