Right video at right time for me when I am getting my cichlids (probably in a week or two depending on availability). I am also using Aquael 2000 and tica colour up light and also using same strategy as yours to create surface agitation. I have below questions: 1. My tank is 4ft long. Should I add a dual mouth wave maker to create more flow and sweep the bottom surface? 2. What should be the idle TDS of a malawi cichlid tank? 3. When can I get your cichlid food? 😊 I will wait for your review to know if adding bristle nose worked out.
@kappa32283 жыл бұрын
Will definitely recommend you to run wavemakers, AquaEl wont give enough output flow to sweep the waste from the substrate. As for bristle nose, as long as you acclimatize to the pH and hardness its fine and make sure, its atleast 3 inches or bigger when you introduce. I prefer synodontis catfish as bottom feeder for malawi tanks, as its from same region, they may not eat as much algae, but they are much more fun than a bristlenose
@kaustavbagchi51083 жыл бұрын
@@kappa3228 Thanks. Good that I have already purchased wavemaker and kept. Will see if I get that big bristlenose or synodontis.
@kaustavbagchi51083 жыл бұрын
@@acrush25 Thanks. I guess the thumb rule for wave maker is 20-30x the volume of water. My tank would hold around 200 litres and the wave maker I got is around 6000lph. Moreover it has dual motor. Reason for taking this is I could put one to sweep the substrate and the other to create surface agitation. Thank you so much with the food details. Appreciate it.
@thedoctor45153 жыл бұрын
@@kaustavbagchi5108 if u point one for surface agitation and one for substrate waste removal, the water flow in your tank won't be circular, which inturn affects the filtration. I am having a 90G peacocks and haps aquarium with Sump filtration. I had already tried ur idea but it will be not efficient, So it's better to by two single head wavemakers. Place one at the top and another at the bottom. Top one must be adjacent to filter intake and bottom one must be on the opposite side of the filter intake. Use a smart plug for the bottom one and set timer for switching on and off. Bcoz the bottom one need not run all day.

@@radhikav2530 the water holding capacity of your tank is approx 12.5 gallons, all your fish die just because your Aquarium is not cycled, first cycle it properly, make sure it gets the stability.. once it's stable you can add Barbs (eg. Tiger Barbs, Rosy Barbs, Cherry Barbs etc.) along with some Zebra Danios and Widow Tetras, also make sure fish count doesn't exceed the maximum number of 10... that would be easily maintainable for you, perform 25% water changes weekly.. you can thank me later..

Nice video again Sir. Since you are using AquaEL 2000, which in itself is not a powerful filter and you are pointing the outlet towards the surface, I'm sure there will be lots of waste getting collected in the sand especially under those rocks. Will definitely recommend you to install a wavemaker so that the waste gets swept up from the sand and to filter inlet. Otherwise you will have to spend so much time gravel vacuuming every time, especially when your fishes gets bigger and bio-load becomes very high. Once again love the scape and tank. Please post an update video on color-up light, how much it helps in coloring up of Malawi cichlids

I usually advice people to go with two canisters . I was running two sunsun 304B 3000L/h on my 600 litre tank. One spray bar pointed up on one side , and one spray bar pointed down on one side with both the intakes on the bottom half at opposite ends . Wavemakers are cheap but the sunsun ones and the cheap ones don’t push what they advertise . In fact they are difficult to position because of lack of a magnetic holder . And when they fall , they swirl the sad everywhere , sometimes push the water out of the tank.

@@acrush25 Sunsun 304B is a 2000lph filter. With media and spray bar you won't even get 1000lph output. For 600 litre tank, even with 2 304B , u are turning your tank 3 times per hour. If it's a malawi cichlid tank, considering its overstocked, that just under filtration. you will have to run 2 or 3 fx6 or a sump to filter that tank well

@@kappa3228 I was running, 304B two years back . Sorry I quoted the wrong figure but it was the exact setup. Now as far as what I am keeping is concern 1.I am keeping wc blue ziare mobas , colony of 10 . 2. I was using the sunsun set up two years back, and even with slow flow it was fine . I never had any problems . See the concept of flow is really fucking important in salt water , but as far as freshwater is concerned it is not a big deal to turn a large volume even 1 time per hour , provided you use a sump. I was fed up from the sunsun filters clogging up, what did I do , I converted that tank into a sump set up, with a bubble Magnus fleec filter . Now I run 1000 L/H dc pumps , with max rated 5000L/h each , and it is the most perfect setup I could imagine , in the cost of 1 fx6 . Yea I use Chinese dc pumps , else it would not have been possible . But the reason I suggested sunsun304b was that the concept of flow is to overrated in freshwater . If you have a deep sand bed , you don’t even need media in the filter . People think they will run , 2 fx6 and Suddenly all the poop with vanish from the tank , even I use to think same way , but I never wanted to spend 70,000 on two plastic buckets with 3500 pumps attached to them and the main thing that I understand was the that all the poop and gunk that is captured by your filter , might get removed from the tank ,but it will rot in the filters sponges and mechanical filtration layers , it directly leads to more nitrates . There is no escape to gravel vac. You might ask why use a fleece filter ? Because , most of the poop leads to more nitrates than anything , and if you max out the flow , you might get it out form the display tank , but it will still degenerate your water quality overtime. People talk about fancy canisters and , wavemakers . They never check their tap water nitrates , I know people who change water weekly, with tap water nitrates being 80, I wonder why they even water change ? Yes my tap water has 80 ppm nitrates , most metros, localities , and even town in India have high nitrates in tap, you can read research study about nitrates in your area in the web . I asked many Indian KZbinrs , what was their tap water nitrates , they came up with same answer , never checked . Kaavish , only when he started keeping saltwater found that his tap water nitrates were 50-60. My questions is simple , why you even bother about flow , when your tap water nitrates are so high , that even if you change or do not change water your fish will suffer . I find it better to invest in a commercial ro system, with 95 percent rejection, that makes my nitrates 10 ppm, I hardly change water , I feed very less for adult 4-5 years old fish , 5 times a week, I keep the flow low m they use less energy , they consume less , they produce less waste , but I ensure they get enough that they keep on growing , since it might take , 7-8 years for a frontosa to get its max size, then I plan to feed even less. My approach is not around flow , it is around , optimum feeding . I will take a fleece filter over any fx6 , ehiem 1500 Xl any day , it can do what they cannot do , directly eliminate waste , from the water . It costed 17k, fleec comes around 1500-2000. Last for 2-3 months , I don’t water change until 30ppm nitrates , also matter of fact if you have a really deep sand bet like I have , with optimum carbon source , you might convert nitrates into nitrogen , after 2-3 years of setting up the tank .

@@acrush25 True that in many places tapwater comes with nitrates. Fortunately for me, my well water has 0 nitrate, my tanks even a week after water change has nitrates below 10 ppm. Yet, I do weekly water changes. If nitrate is the problem, then why not use plants to remove nitrates. Use a heavily planted sump. All my sumps and HoBs have pothos plants in them, in my experience it usually reduces nitrate level in half or more when compared to without them depending on bioload and number of plants. Poret foam or K1 media or even pot scrubbers offers much more surface area for bacteria to grow than any of the expensive bio media. I have had better results spending 600 Rs on 100 pcs pot scrubbers than spending 5K on expensive media

@@kappa3228 Reason I went for matrix was not , because of surface area , when I was naive, bought bunch of it, 8L over time . See the problem with my set up is, that due to 80 ppm tap nitrates I have to pass it through a 300 gpd ro system , that makes 100L per hour , waste 500L . Then the tds is reduced to a mere 10, but it’s lake Tanganyika , rather than spending on expensive salts from Seachem etc, I made my own salt from Epsom salt, baking soda and rea sea salt, and I bum up the tds very high , around 600ppm, the only Benefit are cost effectiveness and stable 8.2 ph, at all times . But here starts the problem , 1/3 of my tds is salt based , because I add sea salt, the water is alkaline to the point that plants usually don’t grow in this setup, I have tried the conventional methods you explained, their roots would rot , or if somehow they survived their growth was extremely slow. See honestly I don’t have problem with nitrates as well, it’s just that wild caught frontosa is just really pick , they were so scared back in the day I got them ,it took 4-5 moths just get used to people walking near the glass without freaking out or bumping on the glass . My previous alpha literally died because , due to a Wi-Fi controller failure , light started to switch on of so rapidly, in the night that he bumped himself so hard on the glass. Even the flow was too strong , them being deep water swimmers all would hide all the time . Behind the rocks . Man you are extremely lucky, zero nitrates is a blessing from the heaven . High carbonate hardness and presence of salt is the reason I cannot do plants . Btw , what you keeping ? And also the wasting 500L per 100 litres haunts me , it makes me sad sometimes, why my tap is full of nitrates . Last resort was to run an algae reactor , diy it , but it didn’t worked out well. I just try my best to limit feeding , that’s the only way nitrates don’t rise to fast to soon . Sometimes I feel I paid a big price not just for the fish , but for the maintenance part as well. But for me it’s all worth it , since my fronts are already 5years plus , they have great resale value as well, in case I cannot carry on with this but the real issue is finding people who are ready top pay for a wild caught moba , 8inches 10-14k range , so yea I am stuck with them as well, 🙈
