That is just amazing footage to watch. Never before have I ever seen clips of the Grey Town line in garrate days. Thanks for posting. I was lucky enough to have been a fireman on SAR from a very early age right up to the end of steam. I worked many garratts in my time but the best days were on the hi speed Kimberly to De Aar mainline with the mighty class 25NC 4-8-4s

This film shows some very rare footage, the operations in Mozambique and Swaziland as a whole, and some aspects of SAR steam shown as many classes were withdrawn from the late 60s into the early 1970s, like the GE Garratt in the film, this was one of the first batch delivered. Later ones had rounded off water tanks and bunkers. The locomotive shown at Golela wasn't a 19D, but a 19A class, it doesn't have the sloped cab front which only the 19C and 19D classes had, also the 19A (and 19AR) has a distinct vertical end at the sloping part of the footplate at the front, which all other subtypes in the 19th class didn't have. The shown large type of tender was typical for some 19, 19R, 19A and 19AR classes to give them more range, the 19D which needed a longer range were equipped with the Vanderbilt cylindrical tender

Minute 15:19 - According to the Book Steam in Africa Pg 140 CFM Ordered Six Henschel 2-10-2's in 1951, Followed by 22 more of the Same Improved Design in 1955. The Henschel's had Larger Boilers than the Original Baldwin Design. Having Looked at the Steam in Africa Photos and Photos of the Same Class in the Book the Twilight of World Steam. The Steam Locomotives Hauling the Ore Train Seem to Be Henschel 2-10-2's. The Boilers have Deceptively Superficial American Appearance, as do the Locomotives. However as Far as Boiler Fittings Go these Locomotives have more in Common with the K Class of the NZGR. They also look Deceptively American to the Untrained Eye.
