Growing up in Eastern Europe I will say this, on children's TV programmes we had beautiful cartoons of many diverse folk tales from different cultures including stories from fellow Eastern European tales, Asian, African and Native American and I miss the artistic styles so much when I compare them to what is now mainstream children's cartoons. The science fiction stories were also out of this world, aliens were not depicted as green beings in a horror or thriller category but rather beautiful life forms different from ours. Gosh I miss my childhood cartoons so much.

I noticed their animations as well for diverse people. They often drew diverse characters to have the facial features that make sense for their heritage, but not caricatures of overly-plumbed black lips or slits for asian eyes. It really is sad to me as a russian to see that the commoner now has a very western idea of africa and the east.

The symbolism in this short film is pretty impressive. Each of the animals represent something brought to Africa by Europeans to control the natives. Religion, laws, and police. Only when he allowed the elephant to live in his land did the elephant suddenly invent the concept of property ownership to take away the ownership of the man. Religion is used to justify his suffering and make it seem like a noble thing. The police and laws represented by two of the animals also work together to stop him from forcefully taking what belongs to him like how they told him not to protest against them. Overall good stuff. I enjoyed this short film.

Actually, the whole marxist-economical study is well outlined in this film. It shows how the institutions of the bourgeois state always protect the interests of the bourgeoisie, : exploitation of the workers, of the land, no matter what country. And the end of the movie is when the worker sees his class enemy and overthrows him from the ruling role... The only thing I don't like in this film is that there is only one man, when in fact the exploited people are in the majority and that is their strength, only by realizing the unity of their interests they can take control of life in their own hands.

@@denisl2760 yeap, sure. Still, if to respect the author's view in the context of this cartoon, then the better translation comes with "Human". "Man" is just a broader term which, of course, comprises humanity as a whole, a human being, but may be understood as just a male which is definitely not something that the author tried to stipulate here. You know, something similar happened once to Tolstoy's "War and Peace". In pre-communist Russian language there were two words "Мiр" (people's secular world) and "Мир" (no war, peace, harmony) which sounded absolutely similar. After communists came to power, they got rid of "i" in favor of "и" and the word "Мир" comprised both meanings. Therefore what Tolstoy meant in the title became a strong dispute which is still relevant today (with tons of letters from Tolstoy, his relatives, early publications, later publications of his novel, which sometimes turn out to be fake). During the times of the Russian Empire, an African becomes a deputy and a great mathematician of Russia, and his son Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin becomes the face of the Russian literary world (at that time, slavery was flourishing in America). The USSR starts a war with colonialism. They give Africans weapons. They build international universities all over the country and teach Africans all professions so that Africans can build their own strong and independent countries. There are many photos and posters with the friendship of peoples, where blacks, Russians and Asians stand together, creating peace and friendship. The USSR also gives Africa colossal amounts of food for free and helps it survive after colonialism by Western countries. (Meanwhile, in Europe there are human zoos where Africans are put on display behind bars as exhibits, together on the same level as other animals) + Western countries create terrorists. under the pretext of protection, they put up military bases supposedly to help, when in fact the military is guarding gold mining, oil refineries and the rest, taking resources from Africa (the era of neocolonialism). Modern times - despite Russia's war in Ukraine ... Russia is sending the Wagner private military company to drive out the terrorists. to ensure peace and EQUAL economic relations with Africa, giving peace and prosperity. They have resumed and increased the number of free places in universities to educate Africans. They are giving technologies. principles of irrigation of land for food. A system is being developed on how to make drinking water from ocean water. Food is sent free of charge, including free delivery. A huge number of Russian schools are being built in order for Africans to receive a better education and skills. Recently, Russia was the first in the world to create a vaccine against monkeypox, throwing all its efforts into helping its African friends. Russia proposes a reform in the UN so that a representative of Africa would be in the UN Security Council and on equal terms with America, Russia and China to defend the interests of the African people. + a representative of Latin America, India and the Arab world. + joining BRICS, which would give independence and investments (today Burkina Faso asked for this). Nuclear power plants are already being built at Russia's expense. And after some time they will be transferred to these countries. We are already seeing how America and France are leaving Africa. And Africans have the Russian flag and a T-shirt with Vladimir Putin in their hands, because this is a real friendship tested by time.

As a South African, the Soviets helped us a lot during aparthied. Not just us. Countries across Africa. Same for Asia and Latin America. They were generally the friend of the opprssed. They were also perhaps the only reason Natzi's didn't take over Europe. Yet after all the US has done to the world, they continue to portray Soviets negatively in the media, and portray the Americans as friendly and heroic. It is very ironic and kind of comical to me.

Indeed this cartoon was ahead of it's time in the contrast of an accepted agenda of the West regarding Africans. I am from Russia, not a communist, just an ordinary guy who was born after the dissolution of the USSR. But I tell you, there is something magnificent and charming about all those Soviet cartoons. I'm really glad I grew up watching them. And there is something about the Soviet boomers. Wow... You can argue all you want that most, if not all of this short was just soviet propaganda. But you gotta admit that the soviets at least draw more realistic and even more respectfull the native black people in this cartoon, than any other american cartoon back then. I'm surprised that the soviets managed to draw black people very well, without exagerating them, in a extremely offensive way. Specially considering that in the USSR was not exactly a country with many black people, like in the US.
@francesco96843 жыл бұрын
How is this Soviet propaganda? It's just for raising awareness on colonialism and their effects on the African countries. In 1963, when most of Africa was still colonized. If the US had made this, I don't think you would have been here saying it is American propaganda. But since the Soviet Union made this, you feel this.
@probo49703 жыл бұрын
This animation accurately represents the Soviet view on the conditions of black people around the world. There's a lot of what some would call "pure soviet propaganda" (posters, cartoons, books), all regarding the horrible situation of African-Americans in the U.S.A., for example. Look up a quote from Muhammad Ali on his visit to the USSR in 1978, talking about how he felt like a human being in Soviet land, as opposed to the discrimination he went through in the U.S. Anti-imperialism and anti-colonialism, as well as liberation of all enslaved people, is something present not only in Lenin's thought (who founded the Soviet Union), but in Marx and Engels as well. As you precisely pointed out, while the Soviets were making an accurate representation of the black man and supporting the anti-colonial movements (also with armed support) that were happening in many parts of Africa in the year this came out, the imperalists made an effort to ridicularize the African people through exaggerations and racial stereotypes. Even though the U.S. is a nation with a large number of black citizens, there is still heavy racial discrimination.

I once watched a Soviet documentary about indigenous peoples from around the world. What stroke me was how respectful they were compared to modern day documentaries. people saying this is a surprisingly human depiction of Africa for it's time - this was what the soviets did everywhere, it was the founding ideals which the socialists had fostered all the way back in the early 1900's. While the rest of the world wasn't even debating if having black people in zoo's was ok, the soviets pledged their full support to decolonisation and self determination for Africa, Arabia, China, America etc. This is the main principle of socialism, that regardless of background, race, religion or culture everyone is equal.

Native Russian here. Some corrections. 5:53 - he said "You see, *kid"*. Not a big deal, tbf, but the tone is different; 7:28 - he called him not "r3t@rded" but "backwards". "Отсталый" can, indeed, be a derogatory term if used in conjecture with "умственно" ("умственно-отсталый" = "feeble-minded") but in this context it was probably used in the main meaning which is "someone, who is behind" = "backwards" (as in "backwards nation"); 7:58 - technically, Elephant said "He must give what he has", not "everything he has". However, I give it a pass because in English this sounds weird and intention is the same; 9:12 and forwards - "господин" in Russian has multiple meanings, including "Lord" or "Master" (the root "господ-" means "ruler of something", for example Lord in Russian Bible is "Господь"). However in this case it is a honorific, very close to "mister" or "sire". It is used towards someone who is of higher standing than you, or as a form of respect. It was pretty widespread in the Imperial times but when Soviets came, they started to use "товарищ" ("camrade") which had no hierachical underlines - both Joseph Stalin, the biggest guy in the country, and hypothetical Ivan Petrov, simple factory worker, were "товарищ". I point it out, because it had ideological meaning to the Soviets, that "Collective West" was using "mister", not "camrade".

USSR African caricature looks like a chad while in the USA, they were depicted in the most grotesque minstrel fashion by the "people of liberty and equality".

i dont speak russian but, this was a great cartoon !! You don't need to speak a language to understand what this is about, the gluttony of the west and their corrupt tricks. As I get older I realize I was really lied to/brainwashed about Russia, an African portrayed heroically is very rare to see in America.

@Ignisan_663 ай бұрын
No, I gave a dislike because it is an obvious anti-western, anti-white Soviet commie propaganda. Communism killed over 100 million people in the 20th century. Don't know who are the animals here.🤷🏻♂

@@Ignisan_66 and tell me how bloody white war 1 and white war 2 were? How bloody was Vietnam? How many were killed in Africa? Or are we only gonna point fingers at others? Besides calling this anti-white is funny considering the USSR were very much white. Associating degeneracy and evil with whiteness and thinking the USSR being against that is "anti-white" is an interesting conclusion if I say so myself. You said it though, not me.

Nope, I am a socialist and I hate the USSR, they only did those things to attract 3rd world countries to their side, just like China is doing nowadays. Inb4 you call me "imperialist pig", I'm from a 3rd world country as well (Brazil).
