Based on annual farmer and yield surveys conducted by ComCashew, the Ghanaian cashew sector is dominated by an ageing group of predominantly men, with an average age of 54years old. Only 10-25% of women cashew farmers are farm owners and about 8% of cashew farmers are youth (ages 15-35). Both women and youth farmers have been observed to have limited farm sizes.
Cashew has potential for jobs and income for rural women, and a lucrative means of living for young people.
This study by ComCashew seeks to examine gender and youth gaps, as well as gaps created by an intersection of the two categories and how to bridge them.
