I do my own hair and nails at the moment most months but that's because I want to invest. If you are self-employed or you are not getting enough employee benefits, you need to take out long-term illness insurance, child trust funds, life insurance, private health insurance and a private pension and investments. Do not spend all your money so that when you get pregnant, ill or injured, you have no money. I would like to be a single mother by choice but I'm looking into investing my money as a cushion in addition to my maternity pay in my job. We need to get smarter with the money we earn and stop spending on things that do not matter. I have a friend who works a professional job with her husband. I haven't seen them take a family vacation in years...why because they want to pay off the mortgage and pay into their two boys educations trust fund.

@@carrington2949 I'm wondering if she doesn't have insurance and investments. I notice in America if you don't have employee insurance, you are in a bad way and you have to invest for that. I live in the UK with very good state benefits. But I also have good employee benefits. So if I was pregnant, my medical bills are free, I get paid maternity fees by my employers and by the government welfare and free childcare for 30 hours a week (so you can go back to work). You get this regardless of your income. However, the trade-off is that our taxes are high. Americans earn a lot of money and have low taxes but you have to invest about 25-40% of your income in social security which I think a lot of Americans do not do. You can't even get a mortgage in the UK without mortgage insurance in case you lost your job. I was shocked to learn about subprime houses and mortgages in America.

@@marleyhill34 True. A lot are at least fighting for paid maternity leave but the overwhelming majority have to quit their job and hope to get it back. I have a friend from Sweden who was floored at our system for new mothers. Her parents back in Sweden think it is barbaric. You have given me a great deal to think about in terms of what I need to save and prep for when we do have a baby. I have a great job in tech now but I may decide to go to a start up and I definitely would not get the same benefits I have currently. Your percentages give a clearer picture as to how we would need to prepare. My soon to be husband does well at his job so we just assumed I would not work at that time. However I would still like to be prepared as it would be the first time we would have one income coming in and I am far away from family.

@@carrington2949 Definitely invest because some women become too sick from pregnancy to work the same job they did before and the strain of being the single breadwinner makes men very aggressive and disagreeable. I knew someone who spent the last 3 months in hospital but our health care is free...now imagine if your American health insurance company said that they would not pay for your stay in the hospital, only doctors appointments, check-ups, ultrasounds and the actual labour ( I hear they even charge you to hold your baby) Invest in some shares, property and businesses. My American grandmother and great uncle did this so it cushioned the social security gap for them. Even then my grandmother's husband worked for the city so they had good health insurance benefits for hospital stays. Check the fine print in your health insurance and look at all the potential costs associated with pregnancy and postpartum/post natal. My other family member are veterans so they can be treated at the VA hospital and that cushions the blow.

Today I guess eh overbooked or had some mix up with her schedule and she took someone ahead of me that took over an hour to finish. I was waiting to go somewhere else in the area after so I wasn’t too rushed on time and was comfortable. However, the wait time ran into another appointment I needed to get to. So I had to reschedule to a later time today. When I got there for my rescheduled appointment, she took me in as soon as I got there. She apologized profusely and told me she had already decided to offer me the service free to apologize. She did a great job as usual and I really appreciated her doing that without me having to complain. And guess what-that one action has put her far above and beyond the competition in my eyes. I will continue to patronize her because she’s really shown me great customer service to account for her honest mistake. I know you’ve said this before, but I feel like what is missing from the conversation is that getting your hair done is a luxury. Unless you are physically unable to do your own hair, there’s no reason why you can’t manage the hair that grows out your head. Just like getting your eyebrows waxed is a luxury. I’ve lived in places like Germany and the Bay Area where finding a professional stylist to do my hair was not a realistic option. Prior to that, during my time as a college student in DC, there were plenty of people who could do my hair (and do it well/safely), I just couldn’t afford it. Especially now that there’s a KZbin tutorial for literally everything under the sun, there’s truly no reason to not do your own hair. Worst case scenario, if you really can’t do it yourself, you better start acting nice and befriending people/relatives who can do it for free, and that’s neither guaranteed nor reliable. Why? BECAUSE GETTING YOUR HAIR DONE IS A LUXURY.

I haven’t been to a salon in years because in the past, I’ve always had negative experiences. I learned how to do my own hair because of the texture discrimination I encountered. That’s where I’m coming from, and I’m sure a lot of others. Good stylists are difficult to find. People that treat you respectfully, that don’t make you feel like shit for what grows out of your scalp, who doesn’t make fun of you for having scalp conditions, who listens to your concerns, etc. The customer service be severely lacking and that’s why there’s so much outrage over these fees. And some of them are just flat out ridiculous. Keeping deposits because you don’t want to hear what I want or charging extra for parting? No. With that being said, I also recognize the challenges stylists face from customers and can understand some of the rationale behind some of the fees, like for being late or having a lot of hair. But those kinds of things need to be communicated up front. And you better know what you’re doing.

But I specified in regards to styling. Two strand twists that take 2 hour on one person and takes 4-6 hours on another because of their density and length should not be priced the same. I could squeeze 2 other clients in on top of that service and you feel that you shouldn't have to pay that? There's no way to try and justify that. It's not about not being able to help with what your are born with, it's the fact that there is a certain level of acceptance that you take on for having longer, fuller hair. It's not even just for longer hair sometimes shorter hair takes more work for a style and you pay more the the added time of labor. It's not a product issue for me unless we are talking about something like color that cost adds up quickly with the amount of product.

There was someone next to me who got a wash, DC and bigger twists done. Her hair isn’t as long and thick as mine. And not as tangle prone. So my service took nearly the same time as hers to finish. My hair already being washed and me being bringing my own products, didn’t take away the time my stylist spent giving me a great style and being gentle. I’ve been coming to her for a while so I’m sure I paid nearly the same price as the other lady. She has fairly standard rates for certain styles. And I was ok with it because I witnessed the time my hair takes compared to someone else 🤷‍♀️. It’s fair to me

Sometimes the value in a service isn't just a matter of how much time it takes. If I manage to learn how to complete mini twists in 2 hours instead of 3 or 4 does that mean that I should now charge less for it? If anything my becoming more efficient and completing the style in less time adds value to the service. "Time" can also refer to the time and money I invested in myself to get better and hone my craft. Time can equate to the opportunity cost of coming in to work on my off day when I should be resting and spending time with my family doing what I want. Some stylists including myself charge extra for off-days for that exact reason. Stylists can choose what parameters they choose to use to determine pricing for their own business. We all don't value our services the same. If one stylist chooses to keep a flat rate for her services that's up to them but at some point they will be shooting themselves in the foot and under charging themselves. I hate to say this like this but yall will never fully understand until you decide to start doing other people's hair regularly. I know it may seem like I am a bit biased in my response to this video but once upon a time I would've been just as outraged as everyone else. This is much deeper conversation than explored here, but at the end of the day it all comes down to a level of mutual respect/appreciate of stylists for their clients and their patronage & clients for their stylists time, experience, and labor. We all value these things differently so we shouldn't try to dictate how stylists chose to set their price value.
@V2B2010
@V2B2010 2 жыл бұрын
@@AfrikanHairGod oh yes for sure. There should always be a base rate that reflects expertise and skills needed to provide a good service, regardless of variables like hair length, thickness or time taken to do the service etc. I think flat rates can still work. The stylist can find a price that takes into account variations with individual heads of hair as well as accounting for any stylists still honing their skills more as time progresses. So charge a sensible price that will account for those variations. So the customers don’t feel like you’re being ‘unfair’ and charging extra for certain things like thick hair etc. Your standard price can already account for that without the customer seeing it broken down into extra fees. It should in theory balance itself out because if your fees are high enough no matter how long the service takes or how experienced you are; you should almost always be compensated fairly. You’ll likely be making ‘extra’ on some heads of hair that don’t take as long for whatever reason, which would account for any heads of hair that take much longer than what you account for(shouldn’t be many of those if you set the prices correctly). Without the customer feeling like they’ve been ‘cheated’. Does that make sense? So say box braids on someone with long and thick hair should cost $300. Instead of setting the base price of $200 and charging extra for those with longer hair. Just have a flat rate of $300 or nearly so you cover most of the outliers. And if you feel like the box braids on an individual’s hair generally should be cheaper than that due to density or whatever. You have more freedom to charge less than your standard price at the end of the service for that particular person. The customer will perceive it as great customer service or sign of goodwill. Vs the base price being lower than having to charge extra for certain people. It’s all about perception. That’s where the disconnect comes in-different perspectives from the client and stylist’s point of views.

@@V2B2010 again that's all cute but it isn't practical at all. You keep speaking of charging for thicker hair as if it's unfair when it's really unfair to try to even the playing field of the workload when every head of hair is different, every style is different, every situation is different. There are way too many variables to take into account. You will always undercharge or over charge someone with the median/average pricing strategy that you are trying to take. You don't want to charge more for thicker hair so instead you should just charge more for thinner hair to compensate for it? This is the only profession where yall feel that yall are entitled to dictate how one should price their services to better suit your own personal budgets. If you perceive that you are being cheated for paying more then like I said you should either just not support the business or do your hair yourself. Some of these fees are truly ridiculous and I see where yall are coming from but I can understand why these stylists are responding in the the way that they are, as unprofessional as it is because many of you are really trying to undervalue the time, effort, and wear and tear that we receive on our body's to do your hair every day all day. Again I feel like this conversation is a little difficult to have with you because many of you really just don't understand what it is like to do what we do to survive and make a living off this every single day. I'm sorry if that comes off the wrong way I realize that I have developed this perspective that I have came from years of doing this after being a newbie thinking the way that you do. I've undercharged myself for years trying to accommodate clients' "perception" of my being expensive only to feel like I ended up paying them in the end for spending all that time and work for less than what I deserve.

I think people forget that just because you see something trending on social media or you watch certain videos on KZbin, that everyone is somehow magically aware. Yeah natural hair has been more accepted/talked about in the past few years but that doesn't mean that every stylist is trained or cares about natural hair. We still have black women who keep their hair braided and uncared for under wigs and when they do go to salons they're asking for a silk press. It does not makes sense to me to go to a stylist who only promotes silk presses and weaves and expect them to know how to do natural hair outside of that. if you want your natural hair done and not have to worry about someone charging for "inconvenience fees" or lack of training, then I feel like you should do your research and find a natural hairstylist. Don't go to the lady on Instagram who literally does nothing but straight hair and expect her to treat your natural hair with respect and care. Thats like going to a basketball game and expecting Football. You showed up to the wrong event lol. Secondly I don't mind if they charge for length, density or time honestly. When I was younger I had to do hair to help my mom out. For example my little sister is not even 4c, she just has a lot of long, strong hair. Washing, conditioning, detangling, blowing it out and then standing there for 2 hours to press it was a whole day thing and I would be tired, annoyed, and not even want to hang out with friends lol.... so I can only imagine doing that all day. I would charge more too.

I definitely feel stylists should charge by how long something takes plus their benefits/social security and cancellation because they still have to rent that chair/salon if you do not show up. That's where I draw the line. My Aveda stylist at the white salon does not charge me if my hair takes up more product only if it takes up more time. And I do not see any white people charging late and pregnancy fees!! I love my black people and I love being black but I place rationality and reasoning over culture. What is more important to me? My hair and how it looks or travelling the world and having my own investments.

All this shows me is that ladies and gents, take the time to care for your hair and do your own hair. And making people pay more because they have a tighter texture. Some Black stylists are just lazy. Hair discrimination, idc how you paint it. Price based off the style not the texture.

I know my stylists cry when a client comes in for a level 1 to 10 and a blow dry and curl/flat iron with waist-length straight European hair. Lol! 5 hours later.... they are troopers. We just need more options, yes some people support the really minimal service you get when you go to certain African salons , and yes people support the crazy fees in Instagram salon, but is there something in between?? Yt people do have many types of salon from the worst to the luxury salon, where they even do your toe nails while drinking champagne, but the everyday woman , regardless of her hair type length and density still have somewhere to go when she wants to feel pretty. We want that for regular 4c/4b hair black women as well. I don't want to be stressed and pay 300 just because I want to have my ends clipped and I had the nerve to be born with 4b hair and thick density. And yet the same stylists blame us because we try our best at home, with KZbin tutorials 🙄 (Sorry for the lengthy comment)

I think that the options are out there. Moreso for others depending on where you live but maybe I see it that way because I live in Atlanta where there are so many options to pick from. I will say that I have quite a few clients that actually travel from other cities and states to come see me on the regular but they always expressed that it's because they never found anyone whose work compares to mine. I think you just have to be willing to pay for the quality of service that you want. Cheaper stylists are it there but there's usually a reason that they run so cheap

The hard thing is that cosmology school doesn't teach you how to do those techniques. I'm self taught as im sure is true of most. In school, they barely touch on how to work with natural hair. I mean its a bit ridiculous but as we say, if you dont want it, then dont pay for it. Its that simple sometimes under capitalism. At the same time, it sounds like to me, she is the one who wants to work while pregnant...almost seems like she NEEDS the money. Technically, if she didnt need to work, she would have taken maternity leave with the stipulation that if you REALLY want her to come out and do your hair, there will be a $40 pregnancy fee. Or even for certain tiring services like knee length knotless braids. That, I think is more reasonable. Sounds like she is forcing people to give her a hand out/tips(minimum $40) which is pretty annoying. However, again, the people who are ok with the fee seem to be the type of people who would have tipped her or really would hate to see her go on maturnity leave because they are desperate to have her do their hair. If thats how it is, then thats how it is. No sense in getting mad if you dont support. On another note, I do find it interesting how there are people upset about this maternity fee but are ok with and even fight for the requirement of corporations to pay for maternity leave. True, corporations inherently exploit workers and have a lot more money but by principle its similar. Its just kindcof funny that for a lot of people, its different when its their money involved with supporting a women who chooses to work and have kids.

I don't think licensing is the answer to our problems either as there are many licensed professionals that are still out here jacking up hair. The entire beauty industry needs to be restructured to all hair types as the standard of education and learning. Straight hair is the standard taught to cosmo students and they build and learn their foundation from there but right now there really isn't a push to advocate for natural hair styling. It's a very niche subset of cosmetology so the demand isn't high outside of stylists of color.
