Yorùbá Lessons with Adérónkẹ́

In this video, I transliterated and translated renditions of an old Lukumí (Afro-Cuban) song/chant for Ògún (Oggun).
Please note that instead of “ará (inhabitant/member),” “ààrẹ (President) fits even better and is even more likely. "Ààrẹ Ìrè" sounds closer (than "ará Ìrè) to what is in the renditions.

I always thought Arere was "Aare Ire" like presider (king) of Ire.

Roland! My goodness! You might be right. "Ààrẹ Ìrè (President of Ìrè)" is even more likely, considering how influential Ògún (the human) was there-he was like the President and Commander-in-Chief. "Ààrẹ Ìrè" fits much better, considering the rest of the lyrics. Why didn’t I think of that when I was drafting the presentation? Where were you when I was recording the video? I’d bite you if I could. 😭

Teacher, I have also noticed that sometimes they sing Awanile instead of àgbà nílé. Does it make sense? Awánílé , Awánílẹ̀, Ògún ashe ir'awo. Awanile! But this may be another song. Something I see is the reference to Ogun being ambidextrous. Aladá Méjì.

I've thought that perhaps it could be "arére" as in "atótó - arére."

Bàbá, I didn’t even consider that. 🤔 Hmmn. For songs like “Ogun de, arere,” it could work, but “arere” is used as a descriptor of most Ògún songs. It seems to be more significant than a simple proclamation.

Ìyá wa, I have another song of Ògún that I learned in Kétu recently that mentions "arere." I intentionally left it without diacritics because the olórìṣà in Kétu told me that the use of "arere" is from "atótó arére." Let me know if you'd like to collaborate on it.

that recording from the Smithsonian is very good, it contains the last African born enslaved people

These recordings in Cuba were by descendents of african-born Yorùbá. And they no longer spoke fluent Yorùbá language. They only used a liturgical remnant used for ritual and not conversation. However, the pronunciations in some of the recordings are better amongst a number of singers since they were direct children or grandchildren and had been exposed to the language amongst fluent speakers, even if they themselves no longer spoke it.

There were definitely native speakers still on the island when the Smithsonian recordings were made. That’s not to say it was conversational Yoruba, but one can’t say no one understood what was being sung.

@@vxlaI disagree. With the shifts in the lyrics that made them almost unintelligible, compared to contemporary versions directly in Yorùbáland whose lyrics are quickly recognizable, the language was no longer a vernacular for descendents that were recorded in the Smithsonian audio.

@@iwindara no argument that the language shifted. But your assumption that there were no native speakers left is unfounded. If you have solid research you’ve done, please post empirical data.
