What took so long for Tommy to be adopted?
Tommy was likely discriminated against because of his pit bull shape and his wonky walk. His hips appear to be uneven as his backend curves slightly toward his right side, and he sort of hops along when he walks. Such a combination was a turn off for potential adopters.
“Fears about “demon dogs” have cycled through Anglophone culture for hundreds of years, but none has endured as long as the controversy over pit bulls, which is now entering its fifth decade. Nor has any been fed by as much bad science, media sensationalism, political brinkmanship, moral panic, racial venom, or class prejudice.”
Bronwen Dickey, Pit Bull: The Battle over an American Icon
