Tons of crucial information here. I am that young guy who got into EP in his early 20s and had great mentors to help me climb the ranks fast. I can directly relate to Devon here, from his history in the industry to the companies he works for. Like he said, ESI is a great school, although most of your training and planning will come from "hands on" experience. This entire industry is all networking and word of mouth. Integrity and the standard you hold yourself to will decide your success in this industry.

The dirty little secret of the industry is that many times it's feast or famine. Sometimes you are rolling in the money and work and sometimes you are eating beenie weenies. It's easy to get caught up in the hype and I've seen lots of people come in with stars in their eyes dreaming of karate chops, gun fights and car chases, when most of the time you are bored out of your mind. I'd suggest most folks go into police or fire rescue instead of spending thousands on an "EP" school. Get some real world emergency experience under your belt and an understanding of the legal side of things then if you want to branch out into EP have at it. Most people don't last, so if you are thinking of leaving what you are doing to jump in feet first, you better think long and hard. I've got 20+ years in and just want to give you the realities of the lifestyle, and it is a lifestyle, not just a job. You won't have a family or social life if you stay busy. You will burn out and have to walk away sometimes.

I recently got into the EP business and have no LEO/MIL experience. I've been an insurance broker for 10 years and got burnt out. This career change has made me feel alive again and given me a purpose and a mission.
