My border collie loved sticks. But we had a bad encounter with a stick, I was chatting with the neighbor and my pup picked up a small stick but caught it on a tarp edge as she was coming to me. The stick poked into her throat, she pawed it out but I suspected a piece broke off. Turns out a one inch chunk was embedded in her throat. Cost me a great deal of money. My neighbor had a dog die from a stick impaling his chest when he tripped when running with a stick.

After watching this video, I went immediately to Petco and bought a pack of Bully Sticks. I have a three-month-old alligator (I mean, puppy) and this was an awesome intervention for her. She demolished the entire stick in under an hour but happy and sleeping now and I have no new wounds on my arms! Thank you so much for your videos. Incredibly helpful!

Love these ‘real time’ videos. I especially like it when Joel says ‘I’ll do this all day’. Most people dont have the time to do the thing all day but they can do the thing EVERY time they are with the dog. The repartition and consistency of training a young dog is actually a lot for people to manage. There are no ‘days off’ from the rules when it all feels like too much effort. I have been working on loose leash walking for several months and only now making reliable, rewarding progress

I think the end is the most important: This is just a phase that the dog will grow out of, and that means the owner can simply get through the phase rather than totally trying to correct the behavior.

hopefully your pups have mostly grown out of this phase. I’ve had my GS pup rescue for 2 years since he was 5 months old. He also was worse than this pup. Many bruises, blown out my knee, used crutches for awhile, and an eye surgery (he jumped on my head on the couch, geez) all just playing, but I am still using all these techniques. He has mostly grown out of it, and is a precious mostly well behaved German Shepherd almost 3 years old now. I take him on walks each day, and have socialized him with people, children, loud noises, other dogs for the most part. But for me, I still use the Hermes springer prong collar on his walks, and have learned sooooooooooooooo much from Joel’s no nonsense dog training. I still tell “Henry” when I am training him to behave, “ I’ve got alllllll day.” ( he became a rescue dog because the owner could not deal with him running up attacking “playfully” but very hard playing, biting, jumping, being wild, so I had my work cut out for me. But reading these comments tells me I am not alone when it comes to the temperament of GSDs, huskies, and other large herding type dogs. )

Totally random question, I saw a bullhorn hanging from a cabinet. What do you use that? Also, I doubt the bullhorn is something individual owners can use, but if it is, can you make a video?

@@BDTraining Maybe a megaphone could bridge the gap. Many have a siren built into them, but they can also amplify your voice. The only issue is the batteries and price. You basically have to get rechargeable batteries, which is going to cost a pretty penny. The nice thing is if you ever get protestors you'll have some Defense, though.

Joel, you did it again. I saw your thumb in the corner of the mouth thing. Here's one better. My Mom taught me this. Instead put your hand over the entire muzzle and roll the lip over the teeth. At most it takes 3 times. The dog may mouth, which I don't consider a problem, but will not chomp down alligator style any longer. You can do it with the upper muzzle or the lower lip. Works either way. Thanks!

You are immobilizing the head and Joel does it by grabbing on the collar and using his thumb. I think it has a great effect on the puppy with both techniques by controlling the head and the bite.

Yes both my German Shepards learned to self soothe their excitement by grabbing a toy in their mouth. No jumping, no teething. And now whenever they get over stimulated they grab a toy and keep it in their mouth

Love this video!! My 6 month old husky/malamute is a big time chewer and he loves all things chew except for the kong. I’m going to try it again but this time with his wet food & freeze it like you said Joel. I already found some marrow bones I’ll pick up from Safeway to try those as well. Love the puppy videos because it helps me remember it is okay to be offering all these chew options for him while he is going through this phase!

Hey, Joel, have you ever gotten a serious bite from a dog? What happened? How did you react? With some of these street dogs or other rescues, there are always unknown triggers. Thanks again for all your sharing. There may be other good trainers out there, but you’re so straight forward and reasonable. Antlers. Split antlers, whole ones, deer or elk or whatever. Only thing that stands up to my German shepherd pup, lasts a very, very long time, actually grinds his sharp little piranha teeth down.

The frozen Kong toy with wet food has been a game changer. I have a 10 week old Anatolian Prynes, he's a sweetheart, but hes 45lbs and a huge nipper. Hes driving my 9year old boxer Prynes insane but we tried the kong toy and hes already a 100 times better, calmer, and letting my older boy get some well deserved rest. I did this with our newest puppy. She was 8 weeks old when we got her and the day before she came home, I went to Petsmart and bought all of the treats and toys. A bed, her food. Along with early training, we now have a well behaved 9 month old puppy. She still struggles with jumping. I am taking some of your suggestions and methods and I am already seeing a better side of her. I plan to put it into action when my daughter gets here with my 3 grandsons, ages 6 4 and 11 months. She jumps on them the most. It has to stop as her nails have scratched my 4 year old grandson and I don't want them to be afraid of her. They shy away, so with an adult I am going to teach them how to take their space.

Thank you. Our 9 mos old heeler/shepherd mix is extremely mouthy and has learned to jump up. He jumps on my back as I fix food bowls for all 3 dogs when I am busy at the counter. I try just ignoring and praising for sitting back down in this case. I set up those skins on my auto ship, I have others already. 3 dogs have to have them when I give 1, so that adds up, unless I can just put pup in kennel and get away with him chewing on fix like he did when much younger. Most times the other dogs will just circle the kennel he is in. My dogs don't like antler and those and marrow bones the vets say is too hard on their teeth and has worn down the adult dogs teeth, but, ram horns work well and benebones.

My dogs have been chewing on deer antlers and marrow bones for years never had a problem with teeth. I decided to give a yak bone and now the two dogs I gave it to have two broken teeth. I never had that problem with deer antlers or marrow bone. Lesson learned

Owners don’t understand that they need to keep their puppies occupied with things that enrich their brains, if not the puppies will find something that will, in the form of jumping and nipping on people, eating up shoes, just to get the attention of their owners. I have a 4 month old Aussie, who's THE most aggressive nipper I have ever had I've had 2 dobies, a Rhodesian Ridgeback and 2 border collies. I took him to the park with a friend who had worked as a receptionist for a groomer. I gave my pup a bully stick and she immediately said, "Oh nooo, you shouldn't be giving chews like that only nylabone type bones are safe." I feel vindicated. I give my pup what he needs to keep him OFF MY SKIN. Turns out it's less and less as time goes on. For the record, I have purchased 3 different style Nylabones, which I might as well have thrown into the trash. The kong with frozen treats, I utilize. Works great. He gets loads of exercise. Currently, he's started turning and grabbing my legs when on walk...grabbing hard enough to bruise and I have to wrap his leash around something and pully him off of me. It reminds me of the zoomies with teeth. Comes out of nowhere. Often he can be redirected with a pine cone or something on the ground. Sometimes I have to wrestle him to ground and get him to just breeeeathe and chill while he snaps the air. He seems distressed and frantic for something to chew. At any rate, he gets better by leaps and bounds every day. I find I'm at at least doing something right, regarding the chews to satiate his biting arms. First video of yours I've watched. Wish I'd found them earlier as his issues are dissipating already and at one point I was at wits end. :) No KZbin trainers want to truly address biting they just say yelp like a pup. My pup doubled down...tripled down lol. I only tried that once!

Just wanted to say that your friend probably assumed what you were giving him was plain rawhide sticks, bully sticks break down alot better and so aren't as much of a threat, it's made out of a bulls pizzle instead of hide. Honestly, Nylabones probably just aren't stimulating enough for your dog even with the flavoring. My dog personally loves them, but he isn't a biter or nipper I just wanted to get him a toy that he would actually like. He won't touch a plain ol' chew toy, and he is the sort of dog that rips cloth toys to little pieces, and even picks the outer layer of a tennis ball off, and I refuse to give him toys that squeak, so a flavored nylabone was a good option for just a normal toy to play with but I can definitely see why a heavy biter and nipper wouldn't get much out of it. As far as his biting at your legs, that's the herding dog in him, honestly there is probably a trigger that causes him to react like that.. The hard part for you I think is going to be finding out what that trigger is so you can snap him out of it before he loses it, or figure out a way to desensitize him to that trigger. Of course, at the end of the day he is a puppy, so if you keep on working with him, and working on the other issues, it could simply resolve it's self as he ages, though it could also get worse when he hits his next fear period and then really engrain it's self in his brain, so it is going to be a challenge no matter what.

He's over 1 yr old now and has long since stopped that behavior. Smart ass, sometimes we go spend a day in parks and chewies come along for him to enjoy on breaks. I swear there is nothing worse on earth than know it all self proclaimed dog trainer/behaviorists/dog whisperers, who think they have superior relationships with their dogs than anyone else. This is like my Aussie lab! She's only 10 weeks old, I'm in tears all the time with frustration, my child is scared of her, and this isn't what I planned on for our new family member. I'm going to implement all of the videos direction, I've tried some and ugh, this is so difficult. Also, what did you have success with for her to chew at this age? Most of these are too hard, we got her a bone she likes, and tons of toys, now I see the bone itself could break her teeth. Also she won't sit and chew in her kennel really, she wants us to make it so something then she'll get it and chew, then want us to entertain her with it again. This is great information. I have a 9 week old Shepardor boy and he is already mouthing like crazy. I have scratches everywhere. Is it too harsh to grab his collar and do the lip trick? Cheese stick has been a lifesaver for us with our pocket beagle who was aggressive chewer, then I can microwave the ends to turn into a cheese puff.. It has cut down on her chewing things that she’s not to suppose to.. need to get her a Kong , fish skins sounds interesting .

While I want her to give I also need to train her not to bite me when I take. Do you have a specific video on this? She bit me quite badly once when I tried to remove a massive clump of earth and grass. She does go through all the growling, rigid body language stuff in advance of a bite and I am working on the give successfully but the take is a different ball game. Any advice be most welcome.

Like you, my ex wife was an animal person. Farm girl owned every animal growing up and while we’re married. Even had a birds of prey permit. Catch them and make them dependent on her. Anyway. She always said to stay away from animals with star eyes or starburst I think she called them. Doesn’t matter what animal, if they have light color eyes they can be a problem animal and always a little wacko.

Check out POCCA bone. Its 100% natural (horse, deer, lamb or duck) in small and large size. The large one lasts for at least 2 hours. Dont know if you have something like this in the USA.

I have a 6 1/2 month old Great Dane. Just under 100 pounds. Most of the time his a great dog but that that 10% is if acting up pinching skin and jumping. When I correct him by grabbing his collar and putting his own lip on his teeth when he starts biting. He thinks it’s a game and continues to try to jump nip whatever. He is a chewer. We give him lick mats, frozen kongs, bully sticks, yak chews, etc. the only thing I haven’t tried is marrow bones but I feel weight bearing cow bones are to hard for dogs teeth. Any suggestions on the excited play nipping. He is In obedience training but it’s a group class through akc.

This is a working line black Sable German Shepherd mixed with Husky. Know your breed. Working line German Shepherds have a strong propensity to love to chew bite and tear things up. Keep up the good work on showing these owners had to provide proper genetic engagement and fulfillment

My lab is 3 months old and gets into a literal frenzy of nipping and clamping down on hands, pants, whatever is within reach. I think he suggested the cadet brand ones. My rottie liked them but now at 6 months they don't last more than 15 minutes. I get her the good lovin ones from petco. They're 10$ each but last 3 days. Stick with the 12 inch ones too since you should throw away the last couple inches

Joel - is my puppy too young for the thumb/bite your own lip method? He’s 5 months old (APBT). I spent 20 straight minutes refusing to give in, with his intensity only increasing as I help his collar w my thumb in his cheek. Finally I had to sprint him for 1/4 mile to tire him and then make him “submit”. Not sure I handled it right, but I couldn’t let him “win”

Joel please review rolled beef cheeks. I have a crazy husky/malamute 6 month old puppy that is chewing most of the day, and he just got his second one. It was like 5$ and lasted over 3 months, there was still some left by month 4 but it was just itty bitty so he got a new one. He shreds soft toys, and doesnt really like chew toys. But this is cheap, natural (nothing but the cheek) and lasts for a while ven with him chewing on it for hours a day.

Ofcourse. The biting phase is just that. A phase. As long as the dog knows you are in charge, the phase will pass.

Do you have a puppy? Because they can experience some intense teething, which makes them chew. Omnce they lose there baby teeth and the teething ceases, you should definitely be able to.

I had a foal who would bite my hand or arm when I was leading him. I was a mass of bruises. I got a large, long nail and held it in my hand with just about 1/4 inch of the pointed end poking out of my fist. He bit me and that poked his chin. I didn't move it, he did it to himself. He thought that was an aberration and did it about three more times. And then never again.

When you consider that a human has 32 teeth and 18 years to cut them all, and a dog has 42 teeth and maybe 18 months to cut them all, it’s no surprise that they are driven to chew. I use raw meaty frozen marrow and knuckle bones to build value in kennel time. They are kennel only treats and I keep them in a ziplock in the freezer and get them out whenever I need to kennel train a new dog or be away from home and the dogs will be in their kennels for an extended time. When they see the ziplock come out of the freezer, they all run to their kennels! When they get all the meat off and the marrow cleaned out, I mix natural unsweetened peanut butter and organic plain Greek yogurt and minced chicken or canned food and use a pastry tube to pipe the mixture into the marrow hole and freeze that. I also use this mixture in Kongs and freeze them, too. Not as fun as tearing flesh off of bone, (which is true dogness) but they do the trick for extended kennel time. When they come out of their kennels, the bones go back in the ziplock and back into the freezer. I had a wolf dog long ago who found a deer leg with hoof and some deer hide in our pasture that a hunter had thrown over the fence, and that was his best day ever. I put it in his outdoor kennel (corral and stable) and he had many happy hours loving that icky thing! He’d bury it in the snow, dig it out, gnaw for awhile, then rebury it in a different location.

Was hoping this would be about MOUTHING as in when your dog takes your hand in its mouth.. like when you try to brush it...etc. ..Ive had a dog get an intestional blockage from bully sticks... so just saying.... B careful when the piece gets small .....and avoid giving them to dogs who swallow things whole!!!...I have a 14 month old female Bouvier pup who's extremely mouthy...and tries to bite the brush. Comb...nail clippers..etc...mouths my hands too. as I'm brushing her..The more firm I get.. telling her to "knock it off." .the more excited she gets.... Holding her mouth shut does NOT work....it actually makes her worse..she thinks its a game ..Shes 90 lbs and super super strong ..... Ive been training GSDs for 50 yrs and have never had a strong willed dog like this Bouvier!! and have never had a dog be so mouthy. One of her littermates is the same... .If you could PLEASE do a video on MOUTHING HANDS .....Id be forever grateful...(Im a senior now.... with thin skin..lol )

I am not aloud to give him hard things like bones and antler s, My dog broke his adult teeth on an antler. And he is to smart for a filled Kong, he knows iff he trows it in the air the filling will fall out if it crashes the floor, he eats it in 2 minutes. I do give him dry skins and bullspees, that keeps him occupied the longest

You can do peanut butter in a Kong and freeze it.

@@bennyfranklin7985 my dog is quit a special case on food, peanut butter can give him intestinal problems, he gets inflamations by greasy foods, he has that from the beginning i adopted him, he whas found on the streets, i gues he ate horrible stuff on the streets from a young age and that created intestinal damage, i did try freezing food in the kong but still he trows it in the air and he always managed to break peaces off eat it very fast, sometimes i found pieces off food around the house on places where we can’t reach 🤢🤮 or trowing it on breakble stuff around(quite dangerous), so i stopped using it, i do recommend it to use it with dogs that didn’t know that trick off trowing it.

And this is likely for a short time that your paying for these extras. Once they've been satiated, the rate of them going thru these products slows. Those puppy to adolescent teeth become less needle-like, lol.

I just give mine sticks. Stuffed toys get destroyed in 2 days and plastic ones are boring to the dog. Frozen meat helps a lot too, bones in general.

They end up swallowing pieces of it though. It mine play with sticks when we’re outside but I don’t let him chew them to pieces in the house bc they end up swallowing bark and stuff. And they make a mess. Get bully sticks.
