I was very surprised when I first saw Maharaj calling himself a Prabhupadanuga. Of course, he is a follower of Prabhupada, but my previous experience through surfing the web was that Prabhupadanuga is another word for ritvikvadi. maybe not everyone uses it in that sense, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a term chosen to identify themselves, as it doesn’t clearly state their philosophical inclination, it is more acceptable and “catchy”

Suppose someone is doing some service which in theory could be called pure devotional service, such as distributing books. But with time, getting a lot of praise, that service seems to be feeding bad weeds besides the bhakti lata, then what kind of service is that? It doesn’t seem to be mixed with karma or jnana. The person may be motivated to distribute even more books, with the purpose of getting more praise. In a sense it could be good because more books are being distributed, but on the other hand there seems to be problems, which may reflect on the way such devotee treats other people or influences them, and of course could become an obstacle in his own path. Is it possible that a bad weed becomes so strong and intertwined with the Bhakti lata that it can’t be removed without killing the creeper of devotional service altogether?

Well this is obvious to Happen with everyone. In Samudra Manthan at first the Wish ( Poison ) came out similarly when we start practice devotional service first of all our Anarthas comes out which are accumulated from Past Sanskaras. In Samudra Manthan next comes the Opulent resources and in the end comes the Amrit. If at the time when Opulent resources comes out, if Devtas & Asuras could have stopped Manthan and have become attached to Opulence then they could have never got Amrit. Similar is the situation in Devotional Service, the servitor would definitely get Praise or even sometimes popularity and the fame for the service he/she is being engaged in. But if devotees do not have the clear understanding of the final Goal to Achieve Amrit in the form of Krishna Prem then he would stop his Manthan ( Prescribed Sadhna & Service Attitude ) and would be satisfied with the Fame he is getting. Hence for every devotee final goal must always be very much convincingly clear. In Bhagwad Gita 7.16 Lord Krishna defines 4 kinds of people who approaches him i.e. the distressed, the desirer of wealth, the inquisitive, and he who is searching for knowledge of the Absolute. But Krishna Bhakti purifies everyone. Dhruva Maharaj performed Austerity with the desire of getting Bigger Kingdom than his father but as soon as he receives Darshan of Lord , he said I was fool looking out for such temporary benefit but now I am fully Satisfied in your Devotional service. Even if someone approaches Krishna with Material desire , Lord Krishna fulfils in such a way that the requester looses the taste of that particular material enjoyment. And the most important thing is Devotees Association, we should always be doing service under the guidance of some senior devotees. Senior devotees know how to handle such situations from their experience, they would sometimes praise and give the fame to motivate for the service at the same time they know the trick how to kill such hidden desires of getting fame. Hence, we should always remain in the Association of devotees.

Srila Kṛṣṇadasa Kaviraja Goswami describes this in Caitanya-caritamrta: kintu yadi latāra saṅge uṭhe ‘upaśākhā’ bhukti-mukti-vāñchā, yata asaṅkhya tāra lekhā ‘niṣiddhācāra’, ‘kuṭīnāṭī’, ‘jīva-hiṁsana’ ‘lābha’, ‘pūjā’, ‘pratiṣṭhādi’ yata upaśākhā-gaṇa Lord Caitanya said, ‘Sometimes unwanted creepers, such as the creepers of desires for material enjoyment (bhukti) and liberation (mukti) from the material world, grow along with the creeper of devotional service (bhakti-lata). The varieties of such unwanted creepers are unlimited.’ ‘Some unnecessary creepers growing with the bhakti creeper are the creepers of behavior unacceptable for those trying to attain perfection (niṣiddhācāra), diplomatic behavior (kuṭīnāṭī), animal killing (jīva-hiṁsana), mundane profiteering (lābha), mundane adoration (pūjā) and mundane importance (pratiṣṭhādi). All these are unwanted creepers. These unwanted creepers present obstacles for the real creeper, the bhakti-latā. One should be very careful to avoid all these unwanted things.’ Srila Prabhupada said that a pure devotee can distinguish between the bhakti creeper and a mundane creeper, and he is very alert to distinguish them and keep them separate. While the bhakti creeper is growing, the devotee must protect it by fencing it all around. The neophyte devotee must be protected by being surrounded by pure devotees. In this way he will not give the maddened elephant a chance to uproot his bhakti creeper. When one associates with nondevotees, the maddened elephant is set loose. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has said, asat-saṅga-tyāga,-ei vaiṣṇava-ācāra (CC Madhya 22.87). The first business of a Vaiṣṇava is to give up the company of nondevotees. By contacting nondevotees and engaging in nondevotional activities, a so-called mature devotee will fall victim to the mad elephant offense. Whatever growth has taken place is quickly uprooted by such an offense. One should therefore be very careful to defend the creeper by fencing it in-that is, by following the regulative principles and associating with pure devotees. Bhakti is our goal and bhakti is the means! As Lord Krishna says in Bg 2.59 rasa-varjaṁ raso ’py asya paraṁ dṛṣṭvā nivartate.. while restriction doesn’t cease the taste for sense object, the spiritual happiness eventually overrides the flickering pleasures of matter and mind. So as one experiences a higher taste of Krishna consciousness, one gives up the lower taste for mundane lābha, pūjā and pratiṣṭhā. Hence we should keep nourishing the bhakti lata creeper by practicing nine limbs of devotional service and fence it by following the instructions of our acharyas, and slowly we ll see that as sādhaka progresses in his devotional life, anartha nivrrti happens automatically as a part of the process and one achieves the perfection of his life.
