International Pen Friends, (IPF) sent me around 14 pen pals in 1989 when I was 15 years old and only one person on the list was male, from Estonia, when it was still part of the former U.S.S.R. He was my most faithful letter writer and just graduated and beginning law school at the time, as he was 19, and colleague was one of the only ways he could avoid serving in the Russian Red Army at the time. I met him, his then wife and their new baby boy in 1998 in DC when I was in Virginia serving in the U.S. Navy and married at the time. I can’t believe it took 42 years for these pals to meet!

I had a pen pal back in the 80s whom I stayed in touch with and then we too eventually met IRL in 2015 and it was awesome. We had an amazing time together just like these 2! I'm still (platonic) friends with my pen pal to this very day.

I had a pen pal, but it didn’t end well. He was a soldier stationed in Afghanistan. And used my kindness to get gifts from me. Turns out he has multiple other pen pals. But he did not no I knew that. I thought we were more than friends, nope. When he got home he completely ghosted me. I am glad these folks got a happy ending.

My third grade teacher set us up with pen pals from another elementary school in our district and we met in third grade and then realized we were both in band in middle school and actually marched together in marching band throughout high school and we both played the same instrument. I am 23 and I have penpal. I got my first one when I was 7. Unluke them sadly she stopped writing after 10 years so writing, and it is like losing a family member. I dont blame him for being superstitious. I had a penpal recently that we wrote for 3 years and she was like a long lost triplet (I am already a twin lol). After 3 years we finally decided to meet, only living 4 1/2 hours apart. That seemed to jinx it. 6 months later she also broke off the friendship. Having met that was even more like a death.

I feel lucky to have tried this when I was a kid until my early teens. Writing actual letters to friends you haven't seen, and mailing letters, and waiting for a response teaches a lot of patience, dedication. One other best thing about it was getting stamps from all over. I loved that!
