I thought Kathy Turtner may have turned down "Basic instinct". That would have made sense because Michael Douglas was in that film and they did several together. CHER turned down the wife role in "War of the Rose's". She didn't think she would have good chemistry with Michael Douglas. Apparently they met the night CHER won her best actress Oscar. Michael Douglas won that same year for best actor in the film "Wall street". The press wanted a picture of CHER & Michael together which was fine. Michael made a joke he had expected Glenn Close to win for best actress for "Fatal attraction" which Michael Douglas also starred in that year opposite Glenn Close who was nominated for an Oscar but CHER took the golden trophy instead. The joke didn't go over well with CHER . The casting in "War of the Rose's" was excellent because Kathy Turner was more then hap[py to take the part CHER turned down. The film was a big hit!

Turner, when offered the role in "King Solomon's Mines", should simply have asked her agent who was producing the film. Once having been informed that it was a "Menahem Golan/Yoram Globus Production"* then could have had the offer (regardless of how generous) summarily dismissed based solely upon the involvement of these 2 crazy Israeli producers. They were quickly earning a reputation within and without the industry during that era,( one _well_ deserved , mind you) - for producing tremendous amounts of schlock. * "The Cannon Group" P. S. Hollywood lore has it that Menahem bellowed "Get me that Stone woman" referring to Turner , fresh off of the box-office bonanza, "Romancing The Stone ", but his insistence coupled with lack of precision lead to a misunderstanding in initially luring Sharon "_Stone_" to the part as underlings had taken him to mean he wanted the latter for the role. This may not exactly square with the sequence of events suggested in Turner's recounting of behind the scenes, machinations . Perhaps, there was a bit more "back n forth" going on(negotiation etc.) and in the confusion both actresses had "feelers" extended their way, tentative offers dangled, entreaties made etc. OR this tale could be b.s.( an embellishment or perversion in a way of what really had gone on) that one felt compelled to let slip or "share" in the hope that it would serve as a sort of face-saving measure on some level at a particularly awkward moment in their anticipated continued career ascent

Cannon was dumping huge sums of money into films at that time, thinking they could compete with the big studios. Look at the contract they gave Tobe Hooper for Lifeforce, Invaders from Mars and Texas Chainsaw 2. It was a couple years later when the money began to run out.

I love Kathleen to death but that story about "King Solomon's Mines" is a COMPLETE bunch of bullshit. :P Kathleen Turner had JUST broken out in 1984 with "Romancing the Stone"; she was not even CLOSE to famous enough to command a 5 million dollar salary (that would be about 12 1/2 million in 2019 money.) To give you a point of reference, Michael J Fox starred in the smash hit "Back to the Future" that year and was only paid $250,000, and he was a legitimate massively famous TV star - and a man (which is gross, but men DEFINITELY got more than women back in the day.) That shit came out in 1985. Sharon Stone was a 100% nobody, not famous at all, and the ENTIRE BUDGET for the movie was roughly $12,000,000; the idea that they would offer her 5 million to be in it, roughly 1/2 of the ENTIRE BUDGET of the movie, and then end up going with a no-name actress instead, is just a complete fabrication. I LOVE HER for saying it, but it's COMPLETE bullshit. :P Also, Sharon Stone only GOT the part because the producer said "I want that Stone woman," referring to Kathleen because she was in "Romancing the Stone"; and the casting people literally hired the wrong actress!

You don't get it, James. Cannon Films was dumping huge money into movies then thinking they could buy their way into becoming a leading studio. They gave Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce one of the biggest budgets of the year for any movie from any studio just because he had directed Poltergeist. Cannon most certainly would've ponied up $5 million for Turner in the mid-80s, when they still had money. And why in the world are you assuming Sharon Stone got the $5 million? That was for Kathleen, Sharon obviously got less.
