My favorite scene of the movie - father rescues daughter! Very touching. No, they don't make them like this anymore.

Back around 1950 or so I was a young teen lad who loved musicals. At a second run movie theater, I sat through the movie Showboat for three consecutive days. I thought that Howard Keel (as Gaylord Ravenal) and Kathryn Grayson portrayed a great love story. I also became aware of the awesome beauty Ava Gardner. All that love and beauty blew this boy's mind. Still love the movie and music at 84.

@@roypeaslee1305 I saw Howard Keel at Casa Mañana in Ft. Worth in the 70’s. I saw Showboat there too. I saw John Raitt in Pajama Game in 1960 in Kansas City. In person musicals are great.

It is the first movie I remember as a child. I'm pretty sure I didn't see it then because I didn't even know what a movie was but my daddy told me Showboat was coming. I remember seeing a house moved on North Roosevelt and asked my daddy if that was Showboat. Great musical with lots of great songs. William Warefield remains my all time favorite singing Old Man River.

I knew this song from Bing Crosby's sing along album--but only the chorus. Then I heard the full song from Showboat. But here the key changes before the chorus--which I like. I recently heard the original song as written and there is no key change.

What makes this moment so beautiful and poignant is really what the song is all about. It mirrors Magnolia's situation. "The Ball" can refers to her marriage to Gaylord and at this point their marriage is essentially over.
