Now this is a movie I want to see. Sunset coming back to Equestria and facing her past. I want Celestia to forgive her, but Sunset not accepting that forgiveness right away and she tries to redeem herself by showing her what she has learned. And by the end of it, Sunset is confused as to why Celestia is just so accepting towards her, even after what she has done, in which Celestia says something like, "My dear Sunset. You have learned your lesson already while in the human world. You have learned respect, patience, friendship, but most important of all, humility. I have learned a lot from Twilight's visits to your world and have heard of your growth from who you were when you were a student in my care. That is why I can forgive you."

It's amazing how Sunset Shimmer has grown from the typical high school villain to one of the greatest heroines of the franchise, she has even exceeded my expectations, and apparently, i'm not alone on those feelings. And damn it, i also want that final scene to be in the show, if the movies were ever canon to the show. And before anyone comes and throws crap on Starlight *just because she is taking Sunset's place*.... give her another chance, because after all, that's what we did with Sunset in the first place.

After watching Legend of Everfree, I've become convinced that Sunset has somehow become a 7th Element of Harmony: the Element of Empathy. Since her reformation, the way she speaks conveys that she can read and understand other people's feelings, from being able to pick up on Twilight's fears throughout Legend of Everfree, to telling the other girls to lay off mentioning the Friendship Games, because it clearly upset Twilight. The language she uses is also very empathetic (i.e.: "I know you feel [insert emotion here]..."). Heck, even her superpower is literally empathy, being able to read the minds and understand the feelings of those she comes into contact with. I do hope that they make it canon that there is indeed a 7th Element of Harmony.

A Sunset and Celestia reunion is literally the biggest thing left for Sunset I feel. We've fleshed her character out to a point that she doesn't have much left, she's essentially defacto leader of the Human 7, she's pushed past a lot of her issues, and as you've said, she's become stronger for it... this is one of the best things the series could do for the pair. I only hope it happens some time.

Aww, you sappy, sappy bird. Very nicely done. Sunset and her arc has been one of, if not the, biggest strength of the Equestria Girls series. In fact, for all the comparisons made with Starlight Glimmer, I think that only works in how Sunset zigged where Starlight zagged.

Sunset's 'redemption' at the end of the first EQG movie was the worst in terms of pacing and development. It was literally tacked on. Starlight's, I think, of all the redeemed villains, hers actually got the most time to explore it and was the most plausible (though after so many other rushed redemptions, most fans weren't inclined to be too generous towards it). But whereas Starlight's portrayal in Season Six has been, well, not that great; Sunset's development in the later EQG films has been phenomenal. Heck, in Friendship Games Crystal Pep Twilight's Disney Princess style 'wanting more song' was originally a brilliant duet with Sunset Shimmer. It was powerful, even moving and cutting it was a huuuge mistake on their part. So to wrap up: loved the review, will show my pro-Sunset Shimmer friends and while wonder how the heck you'd make an alliterative title for a Zecora video. ;)

I know this holds little relevance to the actual show, but you know what? Right now, I want to see a magic duel between Sunset Shimmer and Starlight Glimmer. We've seen how powerful Starlight Glimmer is. In raw magical power, she is just as powerful (if not more so) than a young, newly trained Alicorn Princess. And that's saying something when you consider that four Alicorns are strong enough to match the magical potential of every single pony in Equestria combined, PLUS the magical potential of an exceptionally gifted centaur. Sunset Shimmer has the same magical potential as Twilight, else she would not have been chosen to be the student of Celestia; and while her training is incomplete, she is extremely competitive and I imagine her magical skill hasn't dwindled even slightly despite her time spent in the human's world. After all, she nearly outsmarted Twilight in the first movie.

If they make a fifth equestria girls movie, this is what I want. The movie takes place at the end of the school year and is about graduation. After the school year, Sunset believes that it's finialy time to return to equestria, her real home, and make amends with Celestia. I think that a good way to end the equestria girls series, as it ties up all louse ends and the series comes full circle, as the first one opened with Sunset returning to equestria as a villain, the last one closes with her returning as a hero.

It is going to be pretty hard to make a story in which makes Sunset believe abandoning her best friends forever is the best course of action, and it will be pretty hard to actually make that seems satisfying and not forced. Sunset is really meant to stay in the other world, as the 4th move showed with her new element and powers. Obviously, you couldn't have seen the 4th move when you posted your comment, but asking Sunset to leave for Equestria is equivalent to asking Twilight to move to the human world forever.

I've been waiting for this particular video for quite some time, and it was well worth it. I knew you wouldn't disappoint me. They won't... well not unless someone choses to ignore the entire arc, characterisation and story they've crafted around Sunset. Perhaps Poniverse Celestia might seek to reconcile (although given her character, I doubt it) - but the biggest question would end up if Sunset would either accept or care about such. I'd argue that while she' likely put actual resentment behind her, even in the E.G.verse ... she isn't exactly on "Friendly" terms with Principal Celestia. Her interactions instead are almost exclusively with VP Luna. I'd argue while Celestia' opinion of her, likely matters little to her... Luna' probably holds considerably more sway and respect. Yet when it comes to Poniverse Luna, well they never met; at least as far as we know.

sparxstreak02 • Out of Context, no... it sounds like the actions of someone who is concerned. Still, if you go back through all the Series; you'll notice she actually asks the same of almost every foe that Twilight faces. This is little more than Celestia fishing for details, and the way she frames it makes it look like she is benevolent and caring, etc. Heck this is showcased at the start of the film when she said "I banished her in the hope that she would learn her lesson and one day return." Now, there are a few people I know who that line will sound familiar with if they grew up in a Religious Family. Where their parents basically disown and kick them out for being either Gay or Atheist. Almost the exact same words are used. Oh they'll frame it like they give a damn. As if this is some act of Mercy - when in reality it's a selfish and uncaring act. They don't care about their Child, they care about their "Appearance" as a Good Christian. The same can easily be said of Celestia, and there's plenty of evidence in the Series and Movies that "Appearance" is more important to her than actually giving a damn - as so often she would refuse to step in and step up. In fact the *only* time she does is when Chrysalis tries to take back her Kingdom. Though again is she acting because she "Cares about her Subjects" or "Cares about her Power / Position"? Context is everything.

Yo Silver I think it goes further than that. When I look at Sunset I see major leadership qualities. She makes a better leader than even Twilight does. Also another major thing I noticed from watching the fourth movie is that Sunset has come to terms with her darkness. It seems to me that she internalized and acknowledged that it's part of her and uses it to her advantage. That's something not even Luna has done. Sunset is an amazing individual indeed.

Well except of a few background similaritys, they are bouth rather different characters. Sunset was oppenly shunned after her redemption, but believed in herselfe. Starlight is accepted with open hoofs, but has a lot of selfdoupt and tends to project her own view of hersels on others. Sunnset relies on her friends, and tries to fit in without compromising herself. Starlight Is very shure of the talends he she has (and very unsuhre about the once she doesn't) and uses her magic to make the world fit herself. Sunnset seeks Twilight for guidance. Starlight for praise and reasurance. Starlight seems to let her manipulative side behind sometimes fearing that it returns. Sunnset has still this manipulative side and is sometimes oblivios to it, or sees nothing wrong with it. and so on and so on.

I feel like I relate a lot to Sunset, but more when it comes to her fears. I myself am so worried about how others think of me, and if how I do things is the "right way" because the last thing I want to do is disappoint people or worse make them mad. I love Sunset, both for her design and the things she represent. I think Sunset is underappreciated by many in the Brony community. She's probably the most redeemed character in the entire franchise. I seriously want to see an episode where she returns and Luna becomes the guide to her ascension. Twilight had Celestia as her compliment, the two having in common the feature of taking on too much and being emotionally unavailable for others. (For Celestia is was her sister, for Twilight it was essentially everyone). Luna is Sunset's obvious compliment being the two had to forgive themselves and move on from their possessions. It's honestly a perfect match for the past. In olden days you had Celestia, Luna, and StarSwirl the bearded. In this time you have Twilight, Sunset, and Starlight. Light, Dark, and Neutral :3 It just works far too well.

Yes, YES, YEEEEEES!!! :D Yes! A Sunset Shimmer video has arrived! Fantastic job analyzing all there is to love about her and how far she's come. Sunset is my favorite character and she really needs more spotlight than a movie a year. She's come so far from villain to hero, completing a cycle in the first three movies and with magic seemingly evolving once again in the upcoming movie, I'd really like it if we saw Sunset really start to become a mentor to the girls, starting her off on the next part of her development. And Lord, that meeting between Sunset and Celestia at the end actually made me tear up. It was so beautiful and heart wrenching and joyous. I really hope we actually get to see them make up one day in the show/movies.

Gotta hand it to you Quill. No joking around, no comedy bits, just a straight and well thought out examination of one of the best examples of character development in the MLP universe. That she crawled up from a literal pit of destruction to redeem herself in everyone's eyes, to being the focus of the friendship magic in the third movie was very well done. Saving SciTwi in Friendship games and then showing HER how to take over that role in Everfree made me that much more proud of her character.

Yeaaah.. but I'd still kind of like a believable backstory as to WHY or rather HOW Sunset became who she was, and that's something that not even the comics have seem to do completely right. Hence, I go back to one of the statements I'll hold onto till the day I die: "The fandom of the show is better than the show itself." They actually try to create a backstory that explains why Sunset is power driven and determined to succeed. Some have her being raised by a single father whom after she becomes Celestia's student takes his own life, and others have her be a CLONE and therefore instill in her the need and desire to prove herself. And I'm sorry if I'm being too pessimistic and taking all of this too seriously, but I feel that the show itself does not put enough effort into developing believable backstories for all their characters.

It feels like there is a major disconnect between whats believable in Equestria and what we believe. Take Starlight Glimmer for example. Twilight and, most importantly here, Spike dont even question how much losing a single friend sets her on this path. Spike has been known to be the voice of reason before yet he doesnt say a word. Sure we can take in writing choices and so on but Ive always been of the belief that if a choice is made for a world then it makes sense in that world. Doesnt matter what we think of it, it happened so it is obviously something that happens. So Spike doesnt say a word because Spike either cant understand or, and this is the assumption Im working off, he does and believes that Starlight has a reason to feel like she did. I cant explain Sunset under these rules but if I had to take a guess? There is some generic law or rule of nature in Equestria that we are never told. Maybe the ponies dont even know about it and its something they naturally understand. What I believe is that Equestria has some type of energy flowing through it. The magic of friendship and harmony may be something equivalent to the force and ponies are just more sensitive to it. Being around Rainbow made Gilda kinder than most Griffons, maybe because some of that "magic" rubbed of on her, Gabby would be like a jedi popping up out of nowhere. Spike was born into it and raised around it. Which then rubbed off on Ember. Friendship problems seem to be solved to easily and new friends spring up to suddenly for it to be natural. The mane 6 may just be the equivalent to the Jedi coucil. Is it stupid and overly complicated? Yes. But I think it makes sense. To me at least.

While Pony dad.... yeah that just seems so... out of place and wrong. The clone thing...... wut..... But really, it's more a case of they did not think out ANYTHING in the first movie, and after that were just stuck with what they could salvage from the feces pile, and with only one 90 min or so movie a year, there simply is not time to go into detail, as well as mostly just trying to move on past that.. without utterly ignoring it. +TheDark4light Orrrr.. it is an overreaction, they all knew it was, but at the point, mocking her about how stupid it was would have been.. well rather stupid, PLUS they weren't doing this to hurt her, but to understand her and figure out how to make her see how wrong she's been. Even if it didn't make sense to them, they understood how much it hurt HER, and that was all that mattered, not how 'someone' should take that, but only how STARLIGHT took it, which was to be deeply wounded and hurt at the loss, and have that loss drive her to close herself off, wanting that empty void to be filled, but afraid it would just rip the wound deeper if she lost that pony too, until it finally warped her entire way of looking at the world.

Mlp has a way of rushing reformations old habits are harder to break than you think but sunset's reformation is more drawn out though not enough it is drawn out none the less but still it feels rush in a way, I had a bad reputation at my school once but even though my personality changed over time it was hard to win back everyone's trust even now 2 years later people still turn on me at the drop of a hat no matter how many times I prove myself what I did in the past will never disappear sunset somewhat represents this in a more friendly way, but it is a show for kids. that's why personally for me sunset is best equestria girl since no matter how rush her reformation feels there consequences to her past actions

Great video Silver! Sunset Shimmer is the best character in the Equestria Girls movies! It's really quite fascinating how she started off as a one-dimensional unlikable antagonist in the first movie (and a terrible villain at that) and later evolve into an compelling character. Actually, the more I think about her, the more I think she's basically the MLP version of Zuko, while the only difference is that Zuko was always likable as a villain and a hero, they both were counterparts to the heroes (Twilight Sparkle and Aang), they also had their moments of absolute uncertainty and they eventually came around to becoming noble and heroic individuals in their own right. If it hadn't been for Sunset Shimmer, the Equestria Girls movies wouldn't be half of what they are now. Thanks for making this video Silver!

And another brilliant character retrospective that is spot on. EQG 1 Sunset was a freaking trainwreck of failure and so freaking stupid. But, it really does show that NO character is utterly unsalvageable and they did SUCH an amazing job so quickly and so simply. Turing the most pathetic, idiotic waste of animation cycles in the whole G4 (Not named Flash Sentry) and turned her into one of the most compelling, lovable, and endearing characters in the entire franchise, in just one movie. Hell they kind of managed that in just one musical number, "My Past is not Today." And all your points were.. pretty much spot in,. might quibble a bit on a few details but overall, yeah they are all why Sunset is so damn awesome since RR.

I couldn't agree more with this video. When we were introduced to Sunset in EQG's first movie, I wrote her off as just a one note, typical villain. However as the movies progressed, Sunset's character became more complex and very relatable becoming something as a darling to the fandom just like how D**py H**ves did when Hasbro tried to change her character. All in all, I like how they reformed Sunset. It wasn't a "zap them good and everything is right with the world", it was as time progression process where things don't always go right.

7:55 I think that is part of why MLP FIM attracted such an older audiance in the first place. While the show may be aimed at little girls the main characters are actually all in their early 20's. I think Twilight was 20 at the start. Also the first episode is pretty much her leaving the nest. Leaving the city she grew up in, the enviroment she had grown used to and massively increasing the distance between her and her guardian. For me at least I could really relate to that as I got into MLP when I was really nervous about living on my own.

Over two hundred comments, I've got something to say. Who is best to compare Sunny to outside of EQG? Major Margaret Houlihan. Stiff army major who is a stickler for regulations, even when they don't make much sense. Hypocritical to obscene proportions when talking about being ladylike. Is also religiously competent and determined to keep as many young men alive as possible, no matter what the cost, being in a non combat position. As time goes on she became less of a buzzkill, and befriended everybody at M*A*S*H 4077. She still transforms from sweet lady to stiff major the minute she enters the operating room, and doesn't change back until she comes out of the OR. This is Sunny. Well done, Sunset. The nurse persistently tried to withdraw, but caved when it became clear Margaret was even more stubborn and wouldn't let her do it. You hit the nail on the head with this one. And having seen Legend of Everfree now, I can really see that the production crew has the same idea about her base character. The only downside is that only getting one movie a year has really slowed down a great story. I do keep hoping that we will see something like this in the series to pay off the other half of Sunset's story. I think it's really needed. Especially since Legend really seems to be setting up that series they mentioned doing... Uh... 3 years ago? Ah, time will tell.
