One of the things I learned when watching brush lettering videos is that you should pick up your pen after each stroke. So when you get to the end of your downstroke lift your pen and touch it back down where you left off for your up stroke. I don't really know how to describe it without showing it, but it keeps that drag from happening. It seems like it would take a lot longer but after practicing it for a while it is second nature. And it also helps you to go a little slower and to space your letters a little more consistently.

The pentel brush sign pen are easier for beginner. I find holding pen at a 45 degreen angel helps a lot too

The zebra zensation brush pen is dual tipped and the small tip is quite nice. I’ve found some brush pens don’t like stickers as much - they spread/bleed some.

I think I've heard that one of the Pentel Brush pens is smaller than the Tombow ones your using. I'm looking into it for more planner-friendly sized lettering.

I think your lettering looks great, but I totally understand what you mean about wanting a smaller script, I felt the same using the Fudenosuke pens in my planner. If you want a smaller brush pen, I totally love the Pentel Fude Touch Brush Sign Pen. They are a perfect size for small lettering in my planner! (I use a B5 size)

Lovely as always Mary Ellen ❤️. I purchased the pental fude touch pens. Good quality and cheaper than tombow. They write lovely. A similar tip to the tombow that you used but I didn’t have any issues with writing. They are helping my to do lettering in my planner

While you're practising, do your lettering on stickers rather than directly onto the page so you can change it easily

I can't get to grips with the fudenesuke pens. I am doing OK with the Bush end of the tombow dual tips but they are so big! I wish I could find a smaller tipped brush pen I like

I have both this fudenosuke pen and the Pentel brush pen, but I find that the Pentel pen writes smoother. Maybe this helps.

There is a free program from happily ever crafter. I printer the practice book, bought a tombow brush pen and tracing paper on Amazon. Cheap even if you aren't great. Tracing paper helps practice and super smooth, won't ruin the brush pen 🥰

Have you tried the Pentel Touch brush pens? You might like those if you find the Fude pen to your liking. They have a smaller tip.

I know NOTHING about brush lettering so this is just a thought. Could you use grey pens so they would not be as bold on your spreads? I can see how the very dark brush lettering could be jarring esp if you did a light color spread. Just a thought from someone who knows nothing and has no patience to learn 🙈

Any suggestions would be appreciated, I have moved to a Erin Condren undated teacher planner. It was on sale and with the pandemic and instability of jobs I have chosen to use what I have this year as much as humanly possible. My struggle is mainly with laying my spreads out. I had a horizontal for my catch all and a vertical for my physical & mental well-being. So a new layout and trying to make it work in one planner is overwhelming me. Anyway, thanks for reading. I would be lying if I said I’m excited for bullet journal videos.. I’m DEFINITELY excited for you and your accomplishment with that brand but bullet journals don’t appeal to me 😔 I find them very boring..unless you some how can make them exciting for me like bringing out Artist Mary Ellen and do some cool fun stuff in it.. But honestly I may skip those videos.. or maybe even put the video on and walk away or something lol that way you still get my view and make money lol waaay back in the day when you use to use Erin Condren stuff I definitely didn’t watch those videos.. Thanks! Happy planner will always be my #1 love. This is not going to be planning. It’s going to drawing and creating cool stuff. All my plans are going in my happy planners. Honestly this will be creating specialty pages like I usually do except in a bullet journal instead of a planner.

This is unfortunately an example of creating a faux planner spread. I actually have items to remember and the 'lettering' is not as important as actually notating what I have to do in real life.

I use my planner. This isn’t a fake spread. I like decorating it and making my lettering fun because it helps me keep using it. You may not feel the same way and that’s totally fine! But it works for me.
