I only go to airshows for the jets.. Ive seen rain fly in Florida so many times.. Freaking great demo! And during the F35 demo that fighter during its demo seema like it's in afterburner most of the ahow.

Would love to hear his thoughts on Canada pulling what the US Navy might be doing and minimizing exposure to F-35 (say the RCAF reducing the buy to 48 for joint expeditionary ops) and skipping ahead to 6th Gen (NGAD or F-X) instead for continental defence and near peer air dominance coalition contributions. We don't need to be a jack of all trades in NATO, and I'm not sure the F-35 has the range / payload we need in the Arctic. Conventional airborne tankers will be vulnerable to long range AAM attack, so we will need to be able to reach out and touch people up there.

@@djsmith2871 Canada won't be reducing the order at all. Billie Flynn has stated numerous times that the F-35 range is a non-issue. Why is payload even an issue? It's honestly not. You don't need an aircraft loaded with 10 missiles. Also, tankers operate far enough away from potential threats and always have their own protection.

@@djsmith2871 F-35A has more range than any 4th Gen fighter, with anywhere from 610-800+nm combat radius. Canada hasn't had that kind of range since the CF-101 Voodoo. Then look at NORAD requirements for Arctic ADIZ, networked with USAF F-35As out of Alaska and Vermont ANG. After that, look at Canada's NATO commitments to contributing to a Joint Air Component Force, which includes everything from intercepts to strike, anti-ship, and CAS.

@@djsmith2871 The other aspect of Strategic SA gained with JSF is the maritime networked patrol sensor coverage. As the Arctic is contested more by Russia, that’s a huge capability to see them not only coming over the top in the air, but on and under the sea, working with dedicated ASW platforms.

Su - 35s are the high altitude fighter bombers, russians are using them in low numbers, but I believe he was meant to say Su - 25s, which is a ground attack airfcraft.

I think he's correct in mentioning the SU-35 as it is the most modern operational aircraft in the RuAF inventory that is being used in ukraine.

I'm wondering about how GCAS figures in to the Wisconsin ANG F-16 crash in northern MI a few years back and the Japanese F-35 loss where he seemed to dive straight down into the sea at high speed? I heard the F-16 pilot reported problems with the GPS and was trying to correct it just before crashing. Could that be a factor? I can't find any info on the cause of the Japanese F-35 loss.

The JADF F-35A did not have Auto GCAS. Auto GCAS became standardized later. Had Auto GCAS been present, I think that airframe and likely the pilot would still be with us.

Very interesting. A comment though. Interoberability is ofcourse very important but the discussion is beeing had on a very America centric standpoint. If NATO keep standing and there is a very clear opponant this way of reasoning make sense. But one have to remember that all are different nations with in NATO and they have separate national interests. We need to remember that NATO is not with out friction and with friction there will be people who might not feel comfortable with sharing data and with out sharing there is no network. A secont point. Network centric does not require the same platform. Many other platforms have some level of data fusion and should be able to take part in the network. The MADL is today only one platform. Its a very advanced platform and need it. Today Link 16 is standard in nato and all platforms have had to align with that. Even though that they needed to take a technological step backwards. I would say that the limitation is not the platform of other aircraft types but the standard that they have alignes with, to have interoperability. One need to remember that only uaing one platform is a weekness by it self. There is no redundancy. By including all platforms censors to contribute one acheve the networking capability. Sure there might be limitations and problems to be solved but there will always be issues to be found so lets solve this one.
