Twenty-six people were killed after a tour bus crashed and caught fire on a highway near Taoyuan Airport in Taiwan on Tuesday, the deadliest accident in the past 20 years in Taiwan.
Twenty-four of the victims were tourists from the northeastern Chinese province of Liaoning while the other two fatalities were of a local driver and a tour guide, according to Taiwan authorities.
There were no survivors from the bus, as shown on the images from highway surveillance cameras. The bus was churning out smoke as it crashed into an outer lane barrier on the highway and caught fire.
The mainland tourist group was composed of 14 women, seven men, two girls and a boy, according to a firefighter.
"The front part of the bus caught fire, all the passengers except the driver rushed to the back side of the bus. The driver tried to park the bus along the outer lane. But the fire spread very quickly, and as a result the passengers couldn't escape," said a firefighter who didn't reveal his identity.
The passengers were heading to the airport after an eight-day tour of the island, according to local authorities.
It took the firefighters about 30 minutes to put out the flames, according to Taiwan authorities. The tour bus had a record of five traffic violations in six years of service.
An investigation is underway to find out the exact cause of the disaster, traffic police said.
