The two of them were phenomenal. This is my favourite ballet video of all time.

I really have no words here. What a gift to have this incredible performance captured on film with the insanely gifted Tanaquil Le Clercq and of course her partner Jacques d’Amboise. This performance, especially hers is epic. There was no one like her before or since. My mother was in Ballet Society and the early days of NYCB and always said her favorite dancers were Le Clercq and the late Mary Ellen Moylan. Thank you for posting this.

Jacques D’Amboise and Tanaquil LeClerq are so beautiful in this. It is sensual and free and it makes me think of two people alone on a beach . Thank God this piece of film exists. I have never seen this danced so beautifully.

Jacques d"Amboise was only 21 years old when he danced this performance. He's a fully mature dancer and partner here. He has glorious chemistry with the stunningly beautiful Tanaquil LeClerq - a uniquely magical ballerina who is sexy in the most elegant, feminine way imaginable. The year after this was filmed LeClerq contracted polio which ended her dance career. One of the epic tragedies of ballet history.

Utterly brilliant. So honest in the way gesture evolves into dance. The artlessness of it is absolutely masterful. Dazzled. Just dazzled. (How can you thank, honor those who have made moments of your life so rich, uplifting, unforgettable, beautiful, magical, indescribable. Such moments are utterly without price. They are blessings.)

Mass inoculations to prevent polio began in 1954. By Aug of 1955 the inoculations had been improved and millions of Americans had already been inoculated. Most of Balanchine's company had received their shots when the company departed for Europe in 1956. For whatever reason LeClercq delayed the preventative........

Farewell, Jacques d'Amboise! I think Ms. LeClercq performs one of the most amazing feats of strength I've ever seen, beginning at 6:30: slowly lowering herself on ONE leg! She's only lightly supported by d'Amboise, so she's doing almost all the work in that movement. What a terrible irony that she contracted polio at the height of her career.

i was thinking about the same thing!!! i'm not a dancer but even i can tell that must have been really hard to do, let alone keeping it steady and not shaky! i'm so glad this is up on you-tube so people in the future have the opp to appreciate both of them. i just saw that jacque d-ambrois passed.....i'm saddened. RIP.

Thank you so much for posting this. What a haunting, sensual ballet. I think Robbins must have read the poem (which is hard to understand). Is she a dream? They look at each other in the mirror, connect at moments directly, then she exits, and he is left to wonder . . . There seems to be more pure ballet in this than in the other Robbins pieces I have seen, but maybe I don't know enough of his work.
@philipkuttner79455 жыл бұрын
Actually, they look at themselves in the mirror more than each other. Their connection to each other is so evanescent. Just like Debussy's music.

Jerome Robbins was in love with Tanaquil LeClercq. If you are interested in reading more about them search for the letters exchange between them. There was always friction between Balanchine and Robbins because of Tanaquil Even after she contacted polio he kept an extremely close relationship with her, visited her, took her to trips around the country, lived with her. It was a very complicated story

Her tragedy makes me think about all those people who refuse to immunize their children, they are so wrong, no one has the right to put a children at risk of loosing their lives or become disabled.
@JudgeJulieLit5 жыл бұрын
The polio vaccine was new in 1955. It ended the tragedy of polio. But today's bombardment of children with enforced vaccines that contain formaldehyde, fluoride and other toxins, and have dubious if any efficacy yet permanently disabling side effects such as autism is indefensible. Those who want vaccines, as against measles, should take them. If they do, they will not catch measles from anyone who did not take the vaccine. So vaccination ought be voluntary.
@fernlin-healy21745 жыл бұрын
@@JudgeJulieLit Not everyone can be vaccinated. Some people are too young to be vaccinated. Some people cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons. In addition, for 3-5% of people, the vaccine doesn't work, so they can still get the disease despite being vaccinated. These groups of people rely on herd immunity. Vaccinated people can also die if they are on immunosuppressants. There was a case around 2015 of a woman named Catherine Montantes who was vaccinated but had an autoimmune disease that required her to take immunosuppressants. As a result, she became vulnerable to measles again, caught it, and died because her suppressed immune system couldn't fight it off.
@JudgeJulieLit5 жыл бұрын
@@fernlin-healy2174 That case you cite of a death by measles is sad, but due to her suppressed immune system. Before there was a measles vaccine, in childhood many people (as I, both "regular" and German Measles) got it, but survived with a new immunity from having had it. Natural ginger and mint are antiviral, so prudent to include in the diet during cold and flu season.
@fernlin-healy21745 жыл бұрын
@@JudgeJulieLit You may have missed my point. There are people who rely on others to be vaccinated so that there is "herd immunity". They are among the most vulnerable groups in our society. These include babies too young to be vaccinated, people who can't be vaccinated for medical reasons, those for whom the vaccine doesn't work, and those who are vaccinated but on immunosuppressants.
