While afternoon tea seems to be offered on every other street corner in England, it’s not as prevalent here in North Texas. I was delighted to learn that this special treat is available at the Neiman Marcus store’s NM Cafe’ in NorthPark Center in Dallas, TX. Come with me to check it out!

For $45 the sandwiches should have been over the top! But I love the idea of afternoon tea. We had a place here in Ocean City Maryland, in the Dunes Hotel that offered tea every afternoon for FREE! All you had to do was show up! They didn't serve sandwiches, but they did serve little pastries and cookies. Not sure that place is still there. It was one of the oldest hotels in Ocean City and I think it was recently renovated, which I thought was a real shame. Anyway, thanks for taking us along to Neiman Marcus!

The cream puff (also known as a profiterole) and the eclair are made with the same choux pastry, just piped differently onto the baking tray. Scones without cream should never happen. I watched a British documentary some time ago that featured historian Lucy Worsley. She said in the 1700 and 1800s when the rich could afford the best bone China, they always poured the tea into the cup first to show off their social status. Those who couldn’t afford the best bone China would pour the milk in the cup first as the hot tea would crack the cup if it was poured into the cup first. Best wishes from Australia.

That makes sense to me. I live in Texas but my family is from Northern Ohio. My grandma was a chef at a private hunting club and they had tea time as well for thr Ambassadors, Senators, Prime Ministers that went there to hunt. My grandma always told me you pour the tea first, only poor people pour the milk first because they cant afford the China. It was weird to me, but as I grew up I started to realize what she meant. Most British people think you are backwards if you pour the milk first but I think it's natural to pour the tea first since you don't know how strong it is and how much milk you will need to adjust for flavor.
@sonyavs455
@sonyavs455 4 ай бұрын
Yes, the poor or ‘below stairs’ servants, poured the milk in first due to inferior cups needing to be tempered before the hot tea hit them. The wealthy with the finer made china, poured the milk in last - it became a clue of distinction for anyone watching!

In the late 70s I had high tea at the Empress Hotel in Victoria,BC and it was magical ! Victoria was already a tourist destination, but not with the numbers of even 10 years later, so things were ‘different’-in a good way. Waiting in the line to enter, I met two other college girls who’d come up for the day by ferry from Washington. We decided to share our first high tea experience together. The tearoom was so regal and lovely: plushly carpeted, with velvet chairs arranged around round tables bedecked with heavy white table linens set with gleaming silver service and fine China dishes. It was the first time we’d ever seen or used the secondary pot full of hot water to add to the teapot. The tiered serving dish was a revelation of deliciousness. Not only was it abundantly filled…It was our introduction to clotted?/devonshire? cream with scones and strawberry preserves and we couldn’t get enough of it! (Our sweet waitress even provided us with seconds 😂! ) The assortment of sandwiches included cucumber and egg salad AND watercress…! And then still a tier of dainties! The serendipitous meeting with wonderful tablemates, our welcoming and friendly waitress…I could not have dreamt of a more delightful and delectable introduction to this English tradition.

What a lovely memory! Thank you for sharing. 🤍🫖 *Interestingly enough, apparently “High Tea” was actually the lower, (working), class version: larger savory sandwiches, served at the dining table/kitchen table, (hence, “High”), but “Low Tea,” 😁 was for upper class, (the wealthy and possibly middle classes), which had the Luxury of owning “Coffee Tables” and had the smaller bites, both sweet and savory!* I always thought otherwise 😁 so, yes, you are correct, it was not high tea, though I think it’s been muddled up over time, anyway. 😉

This brought back some great memories. When I was young we visited family in Dallas, one of the highlights was when my aunts took my mom and I for lunch( maybe it was just afternoon coffee and sweets) at Neiman Marcus. While we ate there were models walking around the tables in beautiful clothes. It was so impressive for a youngster. It's nice to see they still provide some of this class. Thank you for this walk down memory lane.

Once upon a time, people would pay (the equivalent of) that just to be seen taking tea at Neimans, for the status it implied, I suppose. To show that you have so much free time that you can stop shopping for a bit to eat lunch there, rather than go home and eat something much cheaper there.

A very pleasant video - so nice to see because there is such a lot of negative subjects on KZbin! Definitely cream with the scones and jam - I mean DEFINITELY! I would have been very disappointed without whipped cream. For me, after going from loose tea to tea bags and then trying to go back to loose tea again, I don't blame people using tea bags because they really are so much easier in emptying the pot afterwards. I find, here in New Zealand, the high cost of these afternoon teas in relation to the low cost of providing them, means that I much prefer to do them myself!

If the sandwiches were dry, that would suggest they were made way in advance and left to sit awhile. Even if refrigerated and covered, bread dries out quickly which is my pet peeve in any restaurant. I know they charge upwards of 100 pounds in the UK for afternoon tea at high end hotels but since afternoon tea here is not that popular, $45 for dry bread sandwiches and a few desserts was a little steep. I rather have a big steak for that money. Anyway, thanks for the video.

I love the tea service. Teabags in a pot of tea not so much. The cream puff pastries are called profiteroles. They're usually covered with chocolate. I bought some frozen ones once for home baking. It was only after I had eaten them that I found the sachet of chocolate in the box. To demonstrate how bad my memory is, I've done that twice! 🙄 I've never had scones without butter or clotted cream on them. Maybe you should sneak in some of your homemade clotted cream for the scones next time you go there? No butter on the sandwiches? It didn't look like there was. I was reading an article last week where it said Americans found having butter on sandwiches was odd. Hello to your ATF. 👋 7:58. The thick bread on the chicken salad is a complete turn off. Where is the cucumber sandwich? Also, the poured was very weak but milk is welcomed. No clotted cream 😢. The table was gorgeous! Toasted bread? It’s not that difficult to get it “right”. At least they tried😊

Im from the area near there and was excited at the notion of a tea offered in a department store, I still live in person shopping but that was appealing level tea service. What a disappointment. My goodness if they are going to go that low quality don't even bother to offer it.

Does that plate really have real dead butterflies on it . I hope not,I do not find it very appetizing.

That would be quite unappetizing, wouldn’t it? No. It does not. 😊

I notice you quickly skipped over the scones section. Presumably because they serve that horrendous flavoured butter in place of clotted cream. I like NM cafe, but their approach to afternoon tea is poor.

Yes, I’m afraid that portion of the tea was a bit of a disappointment. But I find that to be an issue here. I admit to being in search of a good scone!

@@pwp8737 yes, I must say I was so surprised when having a lovely afternoon tea at a hotel near Buckingham Palace in London last year. They served tea in tea bags! The ‘convenience’ won over taste, I guess.
