This is one of my favourite episodes of the entire series. Mel Harris and George Dzundza were absolutely perfect as Oma and "Jim"/Anubis.

Huh... I've watched this series a bunch of time, but I could have sworn the ending of this episode just showed Sam and Jack; which was contrasted when they revisit scene in Mobius (I know looking at her Patreon Shan's already seen the finale), that that's when Daniel and Teal'c walked up, as a further indication to the timeline being a little off (along with there being fish in pond).... 🤔

Pete is super cringey, isn't he? The writers went to the trouble to make real fake stories for that newspaper front page. Along with the Anubis attack there is an intergalactic highway being built, a restaurant is receiving a rating of infinite stars, and a giant cat exploded.

I absolutely hate them killing Jacob. I find it incredibly contrived, because it really seems like the only purpose is to push Jack and Carter together in a very heavy handed way; and I think it's just dumb. Admittedly, I do not like Sam and Jack together in the first place, as I have and always will think the idea of them as a couple is ridiculously forced to begin with; I don't think they have any romantic screen chemistry, to say nothing of being far too drawn out and underdeveloped. But pretty much consequently to that, they have to have episodes like this where they throw in all these random convergences of plot conveniences and having Sam's father make a deathbed request, essentially to the effect of wanting Jack and Sam together... I hate it entirely. I don't know that Pete's the better alternative. I stan Sam and Janet, personally, but that ship has sailed. I'm more annoyed though with how they squandered Pete and that story, because the show was finally willing to give Sam a storyline that gave her more personal depth, that had nothing to do with Jack; they looped him on the secret, so that didn't have to be made a thing -even if how they had him discover it was stupid. But then they do all that just to pull a 180, pretty much making the whole story pointless. And I know they went well into the end of season 8 expecting it to be the end of the series; and it's just as well it wasn't, in part because of how they tried to rush Jack and Sam together at the last second.

Let's assume some Ancient technologies were influenced by Wraith or they were limited to Ancients by draining "life force". Ancients could heal each other so maybe it was a safety mechanism that the unwanted user will die similar to the Sentinel in season 5.
@stargazer16829 ай бұрын
@@Platschu I mean, I get that what you're saying is tangentially connected to Jacob dying, but that's it. A ) it would be borderline if they established that as either a fact when they were working on the machine, to set any kind of stake for making it happen; like a heroic sacrifice type of thing, but they didn't so much as hint at it after the fact. And B ) it's completely besides the point of my comment, that the entire reason they did this was clearly to push Sam and Jack, which is beyond forced,a nd should be completely unnecessary if you're going to put two characters together. There are so many ways, but they chose the most heavy handed way to go about it; and then paired it with all of the other stuff with Pete, and then Jack suddenly dating some random character who is gone faster than she arrived. It's just a total, contrived cop-out. They even hang a lantern on the most obvious solution of, "we can jus tremove the symbiote. We have the technology" _(Someone_ has the technology). And they just handwave it away with, "No, we just can't" There's no reason, they just can't. Daniel can die and come back for the 5th time this episode, to the point that Jack won't even buy the most probable truth about him, and he's right. But they can't help Jacob....

@@stargazer1682 I know, you are right. SG writers loved to throw away and to kill off good characters for dramatic reasons and ratings and part of the potential closure of the "last" season before they got renewed. They also said that generally the viewers of a tv show won't be interested in anymore if the main male and female heroes got together. It was and it still is some unwritten rule of showrunners. So I guess the whole Sam/Jack ship was a victim of this creative decisions. Together, not together, maybe together, little hints, big hints etc. We just wanted to hear a simple yes. I don't want to talk here about S9, S10 or Atlantis. We can only hope this issue will be sorted in future SG projects.

I don't suppose I'm the only one who finds the whole Ascension thing to be rather oversold. I'm still not sure what goes on in that "higher plane of existence" that makes it so much better than this one, and theologically I don't like the idea that just anyone can ascend without being worthy, no matter how much you try to trick Oma. (Isn't Oma just the German term for grandmother?)
@Educated2Extinction9 ай бұрын
The choice the show presents is ascension vs being dead. It appears to be the only afterlife. On worthiness, there's always a loophole. As annoying as the ascended might be, they seem to have a point regarding no assistance to ascend. They're an interesting contrast to the Goa'uld, as they actually have god-like power, yet adamantly refuse to behave like as gods.
@C76Caravan9 ай бұрын
"Oma" is the German word for Grandma, correct.
@Platschu9 ай бұрын
Generally I don't like this magical or mystical solutions. I believe the writers wrote themselves in the corner with these ascension plots. As our heroes can't get high technology from any adventures to maintain the suspension of disbelief then they couldn't come up any proper solution to Anubis. Ascended, semi-ascended... Meh. Just forget it and return to mortals.
@Educated2Extinction9 ай бұрын
@@Platschu Yeah, they should have stuck with proven science, like rings that magically transports people instantaneously across the galaxy.

@@Educated2Extinction Heh. But even within science fiction, there is a divide between science-like stuff and miracle-like stuff. And there are all those shows that muddy the waters in that divide. (Doctor Who comes to mind.)
