As a girl-dad, this scene made me cry like a baby, and has stayed with me for 24 hours. It will probably stay with me my whole life. I can't even muster up the courage to watch it again. (Florida Project is another film - also by A24 - that just tugs at the ole heartstrings).

3:30 when Sophie squeezes more into the hug breaks my heart. She truly loved him even though he was so up and down with her. And then followed by “why can’t we give love one more chance”. I cry every time at that bit
@annalog00215 күн бұрын
That is followed by, "This is our last dance", and Calum walking through the airport doors into the rave (not shown in this clip). This strongly indicates that it's literally their last dance, and that Sophie never sees her father again. Aftersun is an exquisite masterpiece, and its ending has one of the best edited sequences I've ever seen in a film. 😭

This film truly captures how depression is like a thief in the night, and now Sophie is all grown up, just realizing how things are with her Dad.. she's thinking how she could have saved him and so she tried to hug him tightly but he pushes her, he did try to hide it though all throughout the trip.. . . But she was just a kid, how could she have known?

Gamsız Hayat and Under Pressure are just perfect songs for these scenes. If you don't know Turkish just translate Gamsız Hayat's lyrics. You can understand Calum's situation much more better. The song gives so many hints.

FYI to Aussies: Aftersun has just become available to watch in Australia for free, via SBS on Demand. It was interesting to experience it for the first time with the audio description function activated.

Oh, hello. 👋 We interacted on another YT video, one of Paul Mescal's interviews. I am also Aussie, and I watched Aftersun for the first time on Sunday, on SBS on Demand. What an incredible film this is, with superb editing and acting by Frankie and Paul, which broke me at the ending. Six years ago, I reached a low point in my life, so I could relate to what the character of Calum was going through. I'm in a much better state of mind now, thankfully. I very much look forward to following Paul, Frankie and Charlotte Wells' (director) careers. ❤

@@annalog002 Nice to hear you enjoyed it. I too was shattered by Aftersun but I'm glad for the experience. I'm also keen to track the careers of Paul, Frankie and Charlotte. I found Charlotte's short films, and was duly impressed. I've not yet seen Paul in God's Creatures - can't seem to track it down anywhere.

Not to add to the sorrow but I'm sad that neither singer got to see how their amazing performances would one day be used in another transcendent and devastating beautiful work of art. God bless everyone involved in this scene, movie, and song.

I may be reaching here but it seems to me when Sophie talks about wishing to stay longer at the resort, Calum is thinking about his own life. He reluctantly agrees to Sophie’s statement but you can see the sadness and pain in his eyes as he is no longer even capable to maintain eye contact with Sophie. He was really suffering at the time and there was nothing that was going to bring him back. He knew this was his last night with her and it seems to me he knew it the entire trip.

I 100% see that as well, really goes to show how incredible Paul Mescal is in saying so much by doing so little
