karl and suzannes relationship isn't actually that strange to me - i think it's quite common in the north/ north west and probably other places in england (though i can't say through my own experience) that big gestures, expensive displays of affection, date nights etc. aren't considered part of a typical relationship, and personally i think it's an issue of money, like karl is from a working class background and i know my parents/ grandparents can't really afford that either, so it just sorta gets ingrained into you how your family love one another. it's definitely interesting the differences in american ideas about love to english, because from my pov karl and suzanne are quite happy.

Here's a marginally fun fact: Pavlov didn't use a bell in his dog experiments. A bell wasn't precise enough to capture the highest quality data. He used all manner of methods, including electric shock. Plus, he would insert tubes into the dogs' cheek as a way to collect and measure an amount of saliva.

I love the bit about the frog because Ricky was so keen on taking the piss out of Karl, that he didn't get what Karl was trying to say (I think.....and I reckon Steve picked up on it just after the turkey bit) that why are those frogs THAT poisonous? It's the same with a lot of animals like certain snakes, spiders and sea creatures. What's after them, that they need that much firepower? i.e: Why would evolution give them a nuke when all they need to survive is a missile?

@11:27 I think Karl was trying to ask where does conciousness reside. Many scientists now believe the brain is like a TV receiver and conciousness is a signal beamed to the....which if true, raises the question who or what is transmitting the signal...

Think Karl had a point with the brain thing tbh. Maybe he didn't put it well and I'm not sure I can either, but I think most people distinguish between their sense of self and the rest of their brain activity. Besides, isn't the logical conclusion of "you are your brain" that you are also everything you see and hear, because those images and sounds are created by your brain?

I feel like you are misinterpreting Karl's and Suzanne's relationship. We know very little about her, but if they've been this long together it stands to reason she at least shares some of Karl's outlook and attitute. What she meant by "not needing him" when he went on his desert island trip, was not that she didn't mis him or could do without him as a person. She meant that she didn't need him for arranging stuff in the house (DIY) and paying the bills and such. I think they go deeper into it on the podcasts, because Ricky says (ridiculing Karl's and Suzanne's views) that when you leave the house for a longer period of time you should always smash up the place first and not pay the bills so your spouse feels your absence and now has to do all that stuff themself and that way mis you more.

Ricky was wrong about the moon: he implied that the moon rotates, showing us different faces, so you wouldn't be able to just put a mirror on one side. But the moon is tidally locked, meaning the same side faces the earth at all times. Love Ricky but he's incredibly smug about his views, despite being wrong pretty often.

The moon does rotate fully once every orbit of the earth, hence the same side is always facing us. That is tidal locking.

see this is starting to get to the point where ricky starts to annoy me. he is so egotistical about his own superiority to karl he just dismisses everything he says without actually thinking about what he is trying to say. like the point about the onion. its clear to me he is talking about the subconscious mind which actually does make decisions before the conscious mind is aware of them. this has been proven scientifically. i mean thats obvious to me that is what karl is trying to say but he has trouble articulating his position. ricky is the dunning-kruger effect in action. just smart enough to think he is brilliant yet in reality vastly overestimates his own abilities. also the point about putting a mirror on the moon. they have done that, its one of the ways you can prove people have been to the moon because you can bounce a laser off the mirror and see it return back to you. because its tidally locked. aka the same face of the moon always faces earth. yet ricky thinks he knows better and just dismisses the idea out of hand.
