They are “normal” people, with their religions and all that stuff. One of the goddess they believe in has a backstory; she was a good goddess and her twin Neithhohep (she looks a lot like Mariah) was jealous of her because she was famous so she burned her alive, the villagers captured her and drowned her in a river as a revenge, and she also has a prophecy that says her sister Neithhohep will come back after 2000 years to have her revenge on the villagers. Those 2000 years were over and they thought Mariah was Neithhohep so they once again captured her to take revenge for their dear goddess and to keep the village safe for what she could do.
