Probably Hip-Hop and Rap had it's prime in mainstream for some years (first half of 90's - mtv raps and all that), some say after 96 rap started to shape into pop. Late 90's and early 2000 was all about underground, Dilated Peoples, People under the stairs, Lootpack, Quasimoto, Company Flow groups like this were representing the real culture not just fame and being a super star

I was so happy when I found this album recently in the small local record store that's still trying to live. Most comments are praising DJ Premier (and for a good reason, not my favorite though), but I listen to this for Afu-Ra; he has his own catchy flow that really ties into the beat. Even though I didn’t listen to this song when it came out in 2000, it still has some nostalgic feeling to it. Idk why, but late 90’s/early 2000’s songs always sound the most nostalgic to me, probably because I was between the ages of 5 and 10. But yeah, the song sounds like a bridge from the 90’s to the 2000’s, and seeing New York subways in the video in 2000, no social media, smartphones and all the bs we have now. Simpler times…until a year later…
