The history is a little complicated but it is not true to say that Eritrea was not part of Ethiopia. Parts of south Eritrea, the highlands, just prior to the Italian invasion were ruled by Yohannes IV emperor of Ethiopia and Ras Alula. Before them there was Wube and Sabagadis and so on. We know this from writings from English expeditions. Though Ethiopia then was not the same as modern Ethiopia; in fact Eritrea (in the colonial sense) existed before there was modern Ethiopia (after Menelik II invaded south and conquered the Oromo and the other kingdoms). But there were times when that part, Media Bahri, was independent, or even ruled parts of today's Ethiopia.

The Ottoman empire made Eritrea one of its colonies and colonised it for 300 years. So for your information Eritrea was not patr of Ethiopia before the colony of Italy. after the Italian colony . Eritrea was annexed to Ethiopia with out its will forced by external forces America and the Un. John Foster Dulles Former United States Secretary of State said " "From the point of view of justice, the opinion of the Eritrean people must receive consideration. Nevertheless, the strategic interests of the United States in the Red Sea Basin and world peace make it necessary that the country be linked with our ally Ethiopia." (U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, 1952).

Thank you for visiting Eritrea🇪🇷. A quick correction,Eritrea was never part of Ethiopia before the italian colonization. Matter of fact,Ethiopia was not a thing,it was only after Italy declared Eritrea a colony, northern Ethiopia borders were set.In other words,Colonization is what gave most African nations their current borders. So it not only doesn’t make sense but is also not factual to mention Eritrea was part of Ethiopia before the African colonization era. Give or take a couple years, modern Eritrea and Ethiopia with definitive borders were formed around the same time.

Eritrea had never been part of Ethiopia. It was a sovereign country under the Italian colony until it was forcibly federated with Ethiopia in 1952 thanks to the US imperial ambitions in the Red Sea basin. The Italian colony began at the end of the 1880s until 1942. Before the Italian colony, Eritrea had different names; it was colonized by the Turks for centuries and by Egypt for some years. Anyway, the Eritrean people were never asked for federation with Ethiopia, but the UN under the American pressure decided Eritrea to be federated with Ethiopia. Ten years after the federation, the Ethiopian king demolished the federation in 1962, then he incorporated Eritrea as Ethiopian province. Many of the politicians including members of the Parliament were arrested, and some went for exile. The king continued harassing the people and deprived the people of its basic rights. In return, the US got a permanent military base in Asmara, Eritrea which was the largest in Africa. As a consequence of the oppression by the Ethiopian king, the Eritreans started an armed revolution, which took 30 years until Eritrea became an independent country in 1991.
