Actually it's somewhat logical to play Qa4. When playing c6 you always want to play d5 (either to get a caro kann or a slav, depends on whites move and its almost impossible for white to avoid this in the long run) but after Qa4 you can't play d5 as the c6 pawn is pinned and you loose a pawn. So it's a really unpleasant move to disturb your opponents plans immediately

#Suggestion Richard Rapport vs. Davor Rogic (a game from 2010) A fantastic attacking game by the world num 12 in classical chess, Rapport. A game arising from the Queen's gambit opening and involving rook lifts, sucrifices and very creative play by the 14-year- old prodigy. Definitely his best ever game! Rapport also managed to beat Carlsen in their first ever encounter (like Esipenko) in Tata Steel 2017 when he was only 20.

Qa4 doesn't break any opening principle if you understand the meaning behind the primary opening principle. The opening is about fighting for the center, every other 'rule' (like never bring your queen into the battle early) was just create to support this primary rule. Black decides he is ok blocking his knight's path to c6 but at least he gets to play d5 while also being able to bring out his c8 bishop before playing e6 unlike in French. Qa4 prevents the advantages of c6 to happen while black still has to deal with the disadvantage of the move. Another thing to add is that the Queen on a4 does not block the path of any of white's pieces from developing and also cannot really be chased easily or to a bad spot without preparation, unlike in games that coaches usually show beginners to demonstrate why it's usually a bad idea to bring the queen out early.

Watching your videos is paying off. It took me 1 second to find the pause the video move, and I was confident that it was the best move on the board because of the tactics. It was the same tactic as shown earlier, but with a tastier target behind it. I have definitely stopped instantly playing "natural" looking moves and always consider a stronger, forcing, tactical move if there's one I can spot.
