Also I have a #suggestion: David Lariño Nieto vs Peter Gokhvat round 4 of the VI Sunway Sitges (played on 16/12/2019) (here is the link to the PGN: chess24.com/es/watch/live-tournaments/sunway-sitges-2019/4/1/50) I think it might be worthy of the sorcery series, or maybe it might not be that impressive, but it’s a great game nevertheless. Not sure if I completely whiffed that but I've seen joke names like Mr. DigBick or SockCucker.. where you change two words to slightly but not totally disguise an entirely different meaning.

On 15:30 , Kf4 is a draw because it can reach the a1 square faster. If the White King managed to access the a1 square, it is a draw. This is a well-known draw where the promotion square on either a- or h-file (aka the flank files) is the opposite color of the Bishop versus a lone enemy King. Thank Me later 😇

Not do be "that guy", but I think you missed the reason why Bb3 in the end was so powerful. It puts white in zugzwang, because the king can only go to the fifth rank where you lose the bishop without capturing the pawn afterwards, and if you move the bishop away black simply pushes a2 a1 and queens :)

Kf4 is not losing because white can reach d2 with your king and d1 with your bishop and you can sacrifice the bishop for the pawn, whereas if you go Ke5 (as was played in the game) you can’t. Even though it seems black can gain opposition with his king you can still stop the pawn with the bishop on d1

The final position after ...Bb3 is actually zugzwang for White. If the White King moves then the White Bishop is lost. The White Bishop may also be captured if it moves to a2. Finally, if the White Bishop moves along the b1-h7 diagonal then the black pawn will promote after Black plays a3-a2-a1. A very elegant finish!

The reason King f4(and bishop e2) is drawing is because white wants to play bishop e2 bishop d1 when black picks up the pawn and then defend the bishop with his king The variation goes like Kf4 Kxa3 Be2 Kb4(you dont want to block the light diagonal so you can block whites bishop with yours) Bd1 Bd5 with the idea of Bb3) (now the idea of Kf4 comes into play) Kd3 Bb3 Ke2(now if white trades your king is close enough to hold off the a pawn and because its in the outermost lane this is a known draw) The reason the same ideas dont work in Ke5 is although you seem to hold this Bb3 idea by guarding the d5 square not really as you see in this variation Ke5 Kxa3 Be2 Kb4 Be1 and now the reason this doesnt work: Be4 (white has to react) Bg4 Bb5(now white has to go back to e1 with the bishop and you can do the aforementioned maneuver via using c4 instead of d5) Be1 Bc4 and whatever white does he cant guard the bishop and bishop b3 is inevitably winning Feel free to ask anything
@christiancoester2455
@christiancoester2455 3 жыл бұрын
It's not really about guarding the bishop but only about getting the king to the a1 corner, which is faster via f4 than e5 (see my other comment). It doesn't matter whether White loses the bishop or not, the king just needs to get to a1 to ensure a draw.

Hi agad, so Kf4 is not a losing move because white needs to play Be2-Bd1 to prevent the white pawn from moving while whites king goes closer to the a1 square where it would be an automatic draw. Let me take you through some lines 63. Kf4 Kxa3 64.Be2 and now white has a couple of options, if move the king or prevent the bishop from reaching d1, lets see Ba4 first. Then 65.Ke3 Bb3 (gotta make room for the pawn), 66.Kd2 Kb2 And now white has 67.Bb5 and that pawn is never moving. But say black moves the king first with 65... Ke4 preventing that, then simply 66.Kd2 and its a whatever black plays Bd1 is coming, either exchanging bishops its a draw or moving it away its a draw. And if 65...Ke2 then 66.Kd2 is suficient for the same reasons However, if the king is on e5 black has a valuable tempo to take the king and bishop away and the Be2 Bd1 manouver doesnt work cause the bishop is unprotected Lets see the if the king moves dirst now. 64 Be2 Kb2, going after the bishop, then 65. Bd1 and if Kc1 then simply Bb3 and you can either repeat moves or move something else, but the a4 is protected by the bishop and if you move the bishop the king gets closer, actually in this variation it doesnt really matter if Ke5 or Kf4, the other one is the important one :) So yeah, hope it makes sense, and let me brag a little bit, I actually found this myself (then checked it with the engine of course) and it is 100% because of you that I got this good at chess, so thank you for that. Hope you have a great day. TL;DR: It works because white needs to make the manouver Be2-Bd1 and when black prevents this white has won a tempo to get the king closer Edit: Also #suggestion Dubov vs Nepomniatchi was a great game where Dubov was down four pawns and winning, and then he went on a pawn killing spree

The reason the engines give 63. Kf4 (or also Be2) is because this is a 7 pieces position and engines have access to table bases. Other than that, if I try to explain the reason the moves still make a draw is because Ke5 loses a precious tempo and separate the king and the bishop simply too much. From what I understand white's bishop needs to be able to be on the e2 square with the king close enough to have opposition to protect everything and you're always a tempo up and there is simply nothing black can do. TL;DR: You need to play 63. Kf4 and 64. Be2 in order to gain the long opposition and be a tempo ahead of black.

17:50 there is an alternative, what if magnus does a bishop sacrifice for a queen. Bf7 to Bg6 hence the white Bb2 can only go to A2 or takes Bg6 (best move) Magnus just have to push his pawn to a2 then white Bb1 trying to stop the queen but then pawn to A1 by Magnus then he gets a queen against a bishop end game
@grahamyodude
@grahamyodude 3 жыл бұрын
15:30 King f4 is the right move because the bishops are light squared, e5 being losing because a1 is dark square and the bishop cannot protect the queening square. The king can catch the pawn because the black king doesnt have time to cut off the white king if f4 is played. White King f4, black king takes pawn, white king e3 (black king is 2 squares from c4 and b5 is already covered by white bishop if black king tries to stop white bishop taking the pawn the white king can cut off the black pawn) black king must b2, to cut off white king, but then bishop can stop the pawn, if black king b3, white king d2, black king must either stop bishop from getting into position to take the pawn, or cut off white king from going c1 but cannot do both, resulting in draw from white bishop getting the pawn or the king cutting off the black king from protecting the queening square, and again since queening square is black and they are light square bishops the bishop is useless to help pawn queen.

At 18:00, with Bishop B3 you're not threatening Bishop C2 to trap white's light square Bishop, you're just ending the game right away : White has to move - If bA2, KxA2 or BxA2 (it's the same) and you can push your pawn - If Bishop moves elsewhere, he no longer defends A2 so the pawn can be pushed - If King moves, he has to move away from the pawn so the black King can immediately capture white's Bishop, and that's game.

At 17:45 Agadmator states that the move Bb3 (which Magnus played) is the “absolute quickest way to win”, but I think it isn’t - simply Bg6 and it’s all over, cause you don’t need to go Bb3 to trap the light square bishop - it would already be trapped because if white captures the bishop then simply a2 ensures a queen on the next move. If he doesn’t capture his only moves are with the bishop on the b1-h7 diagonal (then again a2 or bishop captures), Ba2 (then the king captures on b1), and if white moves the king (say Ka3) then simply Bxb1. So Agadmator is wrong, Bb3 is not the absolute quickest, as it requires one more move before pushing a2 than Bg6.

Great game && upload, I thought 72... Bg6 was the answer and after putting it in to an analysis board I was happy to see it works as well (leads to a Q VS B endgame). Bb3 is just over the top, absolutely brilliant.

@15:45 The idea of Kf4 being better than Ke5 for white is after black captures on a3, white can play Be2, Bd1 and when black blocks the d1-a4 diagonal with Kb4, Ba4, Bb3, white king can instead wiggle in via e3, d2, c1, b2 and is just in time to catch a1 pawn when it's queening. Starting from e5, the route of the same length for the white king would be d4,c3,b2,a1 unfortunately c3 is not available as black king controls is from b4. Hope that makes sense

The reason why kf4 doesn t lose: White s defense is that the bishop has those 4 squares: d1, h5, e8 from which the bishop guards a4. After Kf4 Kxa3 Be2 Kb4 Bd1 Ba4 Bh5 Bb5 Bd1 and Bc4 (to go to b3) white has Ke3! If Bb3 just Kd2, black can t trade bishops and the white king just reachs b1. The bishop can be even given up after Bb3 Kd2 a4 Kc1 a3 Kb1 = But if you go Ke5, the black king is just too far away from b1 or c1. White needs two more moves to go there (b1,c1), white is just too slow like magnus showed.
