Man, in this game Levon ran over Leinier like he was not top tier. There’s just something about Levon’s play that shows the disparity of his performance or preparation and his opponents’, whereas Fabi’s, Magnus’s and Giri’s play is a slow grinding. He reminds me of Anand during his better days. When Levon sees an opportunity, he goes ballistic and bulldozes his opponent.

@@jootpepet the computer analysis shows that white had a slight advantage, but this is hard to play for humans. Even with the engines calling both sides almost equal, Leinier’s position was in peril. The commentator (I forgot if it was Danya or Rob) perfectly described it.

With the new move being Bg5+ I'm struck by how some guidelines of playing chess are some you must first learn and then apperently at the super GM level unlearn :). So the patzher sees a check and gives it, the intermediate player sees that it can be blocked by f6 and figures "ah I've learned, this is a useless check and I'm too smart to make that move. Then the GM plays Bg5+ because he's ok with moving his bishop twice as long as he can provoke a weakness in the opponents position. Chess really is a game of many levels of understanding.

The position got so complicated that even Vishy Anand on commentary was unable to find the combination that maintained white's advantage on the engine bar. There was like a 10-move sequence with only one winning move, and usually not a "natural" move. In other words, Levon is playing out of his mind.

The idea is that both players were dancing on the head of a pin so that if either didn't play the top move the engine gave a big advantage to the other. So as i recall it's not that Levon blundered and then Lenier missed an equalizer, and more that Levon played the engine move and Lenier did not.

But instead of retreating the bishop afterward, why not continue with Bxb2, attacking the rook and giving Black two advanced supported passed pawns? Yes, the d file is somewhat open, but I believe that weakness can be adequately defended. I would like to have seen an exploration of this continuation.
