while i agree that the rook a1 to a2 move by paulsen is not great to me i think his reasoning would be so that morphy is then more or less forced to exchange (or sacrifice!) queens because now the the c2 square is covered by the rook. i think it makes sense for paulsen to want to have the queens off the board and simplify the game against morphy

I actually saw another check mate, I think this also works. 1)...Bg1+ 2)Kg1 Bf3+ 3)Kf1 Rg2 White has a couple of moves here but none of them work 4)d4 Rxh2 5)Rd3 Rh1# or 4)Qe2 Rxe2 5)d3 Rxh2 6)c4 Rh1# or 4)Qc8 Rxf2+ 5)Kg1 Rg2+ 6)Kf1 Rg1# Well, it was 6 moves tops. But it was worth a shot!
@francescoserra60267 жыл бұрын
Johaylon you forgot 4 Qd3, which forces the f3 bishop away. Anyway, this is a winning position, so anything would just win you the game, if you don't blatantly blunder
@noone-qu5ec7 жыл бұрын
Actually that mating pattern could have been done on 5:24 onwards and Qd3 does'nt forces the f3 bishop to move cause there's Rxf2+ and after Kg1 Rg2+ Kf1 Rg1#
@xHanz0x7 жыл бұрын
Hello Agadmator. About the move Ra2, i think he did it in order to play first Ba3 without leaving the pawn in d2 unprotected, then may be double up the rooks on the a file by playing Rfa1 to attack the a7 pawn and tying the bishop at b6 to its defense, then retreating the bishop to c1 again.

At 3:45, instead of QxF3, why not Queen captures F1, if king captures then rook E1 is mate, and if Queen captures then again Rook E1, Queen captures is pretty much forced, and then second rook to E1 is mate. Can anybody check if there's a defense?

at first I thought paulsen played Ra2 to defend the d2 pawn so that he can eventually move the c1 bishop. But the more I thought about it, I thought no that is not it. He actually played Ra2 to stop Qc2. He seen the threat of doubling rooks and sacrificing the queen on f1 that morphy was threatening, and like you said prepared to play Qa6 next move only after the rooks were doubled to parry the threat. But he clearly missed Qxf3 :P
@salamanderguy32706 жыл бұрын
at 7:00 you said there is only one way to stop this, but what about white moving his queen to d 3, so if the bishop moves there for the check mate the queen captures him and it appears the position would still be fine for both then
@dolphinsneu2 жыл бұрын
This is a much better defense, but after f5, black still should win

@giriiyer39684 жыл бұрын
I believe why Paulsen played rook to A2 is bcoz after Queen to d3. All his pieces were barricaded in the first rank so he brought his queen out at A4 then rook to A2 to cover pawn on c2 and then play bishop from c1 to A3 and complete his development
@stresss41887 жыл бұрын
You said yourself that in order for morphy to deny the queen trade he would have to move his queen to c2, the rook a2 prevents that move.

3:08 .. (Ra2) actually we can just presume why he played it 'cause this rook didn't come to game any more, but I think Paulsen didn't expect a queen sacrifice, so he still wanted to free his d-pawn and was sure that Bd1 and Bc2 now protected by Ra2, will do the job. His plan failed for a certain reason - as GM Kruno Hulak said : "I'm always playing the best moves .. if my opponent does allow it".
@stormxploit36757 жыл бұрын

Probably at 5:26 Morphy could have won faster by playing rook g2 instead of Bg2+ with the idea of capturing on h2 and then rook h1 mate and their is no defence against this idea or if after rook g2 if white plays rook e1 then simply Rc2+ after king moves Rook takes d1+ queen blocks rook D takes queen checkmate

I think 16. Ra2 is actually a very smart move (apart from the fact that it loses to Qxf3, but obviously Paulsen didn't see that one). The idea for white is to push d4 and than black is much worse. Black has doubled pawns on the c file, his dark square bishop is dead forever. Maybe black's able to hold it, but if antyone is playing for a win it's white. So in order to push d4 white wants to play Qa6, get rid of black's queen and go d4. It deosn't matter if black exchanges queens or if he plays Qf5 or Qg6, white simply pushes d4 and he's great. But the problem is that after an immediate 16. Qa6 black goes 16...Qc2 and white can't go d4, because the pawn on c3 is hanging. White also can't chase black's queen away with 17. Ra2 now, because black goes 17... Qb3 18 Qa3 Qc4 if white goes 19 d4 after 19... Rae8 black threatens Qxf1 or simply Re1 and white king is exposed and his pieces are misplaced. I think he survives after something like 20. Be3, but with black dominant queen od c4 attacking the pawn on c3 the position is rather unclear. Black has some problems and the endgame is worse for him, but there's no clear way for white to exchange pieces. Black can also go f5, h6, g5 to limit white's bishops, especially the one one e3. So after 16... Qc2 white probably has to repeat and chase black's queen around c2, b3, c4 and d3 and it's a draw. My guess would be, that with 16. Ra2 Paulsen was actually playing for a win, because if black queen is on f5 or g6 instead of c4 it's far less active and it's easier for white to exchange material, but he simply missed the tactics with Qxf3 which is not a move you would consider in such postion. Unless you are Paul Morphy of course.
@Danszt6 жыл бұрын
i have a book that says that Paulsen played rook a2 to try exchange queens and play d4

Agad. Someone else made a comment on this 2 months ago, and I agree with him. You should consider changing your channel name to something like "agadmator" or "agadchess". This will probably make your channel grow even faster. Both because it's a catchier name, and also because it's just simpler. "Chess channel" seems pointless for a fairly large channel, and seems a bit "nooby". Love your shit man, I'm addicted! (:
