If Magnus continues to increase the pressure with which he squeezes these rocks to get everything last bit out, he will end up either igniting it into a fusion reactor or turning it into a black hole. A world chess champion winning a Nobel prize, now that will be a first.

I've seen many Carlsen games here (thanks to agadmator) and while I wouldn't say they are Tal or Nezhmetdinov-level exciting, it is amazing how Carlsen exploits the tiniest of opportunities to his advantage. I feel like I'm watching less of a human and more of a computer. There's something magical about the sacrificial chaos that Tal pulls out of his hat...but I also appreciate the machine-like precision that allows Carlsen to turn seemingly drawn games into wins and if not then at least profitable positions.

watched this on the chessbrah twitch channel, and have to say Eric Hansen's calculation of Rh3 and all the following moves was very impressive. The game itself and Carlsen's precise moves, however were even more impressive to me, obviously.

That's the best chess game I've seen all year. To win as black against maxime in that fashion was very impressive. To sacrifice the queen was awesome too. That wouldn't have occurred to me. Just the subtlety of moves that carlsen plays are amazing. Water from stone.

Most of Carlsen opponents fail because they lose a pawn at some point in the game. After that they can never equalize and Carlsen just exchanges pieces till the very end. And a pawn is strongest indeed in the "end", not in the beginning of a game. Another standard win for Magnus...

The engine says that after Kf2 at 11:49 the evaluation jumps from -2.1 to -5.7 so that must be the "loosing" move. The engine suggested Re2 instead of Kf2 to keep the evaluation at -2.1

Rh3 is the most intuitive attacking move. I found it instantly because as an amateur, that position happen almost in every endgame. Carlsen didn't outplay MVL here, but give him some onboard puzzle-like position. Just like Lasker did in his prime.

Sometimes the difference can be as small as gaining a tempo at the right time, I suppose. Magnus made his rooks active all over the board, but Maxime sort of kept his at the outskirts, lowering their power. But of course it was finding the only move that didn't give a draw that gave the chance for a nice win.

Before you said to pause the video to think of the next move, I was actually expecting the move Kc7 to be played. Not really sure if that works, but the e2 rook is pinned so it can't check the black king and this puts the black king one step closer to the a-file. Any chess masters can tell me why that might not work?

12:30 wouldn't Rcc2 also be a good move? If Rook takes pawn then rook c2 takes rook e2 check and you have two rooks against one.. and if rook e2 takes rook c2 then rook be takes rook c2 check and after king moves, push pawn.. and it should be winning for black right? Or am I missing something??

By mvl not using the queen bishop battery ram and pushing for e5 instead - it gave carlsen a slight advantage (according to stockfish) and carlsen played pretty much a perfect game. Hard to play chess against someone that good.

correct me if im wrong but shouldn't MVL have played this at 13:11 he could have had his a6 rook take blacks a3 pawn. here black probably not fall for the bait and take the rook, but instead check by playing h2 then proceed to get your rook, so then black is up a rook, although maybe MVL could have made a draw even still. Because even then it would be 1 rook vs 2 for white, but that's better than a rook plus a queen for black, eliminating the pawn as your only drawable option.

After 13:07 - what's wrong with capturing the pawn, for a draw?
@JokerExperiment
@JokerExperiment 6 жыл бұрын
Not a draw, if you capture the pawn black will capture the rook in front of the king first, checking it. You will capture the rook (so material now equal), but after the king captures black can capture white's rook for a king-rook vs. king endgame.
