Weeks after surviving a car crash on Dec. 18, 2014, Sidney Doane arrived via air ambulance to Madonna's Lincoln Campus. Her brain sustained severe trauma in the accident - a diffuse axonal injury or DAI. More than 90 percent of patients with a DAI never regain consciousness. But Sidney, of Downs, Kansas, was a fighter with incredible family support. She spent years in intense therapy rewiring her brain to walk, eat, speak, and resume college coursework. In 2016, Madonna honored Sidney for her courage and determination. Sidney never wavered on her goals as she continued to heal and hit milestone after milestone at Madonna using nearly every piece of specialized technology as she progressed through the continuum of care. An accomplished horsewoman, Sidney even returned to showing her Quarter Horse competitively. On Jan. 17, 2019, Sidney's team surprised her with a Spirit Award celebration to mark her final day of therapy. Watch Sidney's amazing transition to independence - four years in the making!

Good for her! Huge accomplishments with the help of all the medical team and family who have supported her through the journey and most especially God’s mercy, grace and blessing! One of my granddaughters was born with medical problems that left her unable to suck, lift her head and many other inabilities. She’s 5 now and still unable to eat (fed through a tube in her stomach) or talk (but there’s never any doubt what she’s thinking!) but can walk a few steps without support, uses both hands individually and together, uses a device like a tablet that she presses certain buttons to communicates with others. Watching this young lady overcome so many of the same obstacles fills me with joy for her and even more confidence and faith in my granddaughter’s future abilities! Thank you for sharing this story. Watched on Christmas Day, 2023. 🙏💕

So happy for her recovery. I too am a survivor of DAI. December 27th 2016 I flipped my four wheeler down a steep embankment. I was 22 years old at the time and am doing great today! I wish all of you going through a similar injury blessings!

❤️ I got t- boned on my side and was knocked unconscious for 9 to 12 seconds, I suffered a concussion, felt confused for months and it's been 6 months and a couple days since the crash and symptoms are coming and going🥹 but I'm finally getting better. Hopefully I don't regress because sometimes it feels I'am when I wake up confused.

I was a pedestrian knocked on my head by a car in 1981; after a month-long coma, I was transferred to Gaylord Hospital in Connecticut, where I learned to walk again. Your recovery will continue, and I'm so happy for you.

This is tough and I am happy for her recovery. Unfortunately she will never get a chance to truly enjoy life to the fullest but God bless her and her caregivers for devoting so much time and energy to help her. I am speaking as one who has a serious TBI, so I know.
