I love walkable dense urban centres with lots of people and activity. Unfortunately I live in a town (fake London) that is anything but walkable and dense. It's simply impossible to get around without a car here.

Heh, as a non-driver I don't remember skipping hand in hand through my local town centre after walking the mile to it. 😃

Why do so many North Americans not understand these concepts? In my large US metropolis, the urban planners seem to get these concepts but are met with fierce opposition from residents and politicians. Even adding crosswalks and shaded bus stops are bitterly opposed.
