The story had an irrational ending ... leaving a dubious situation that had various loose ends that didst make sense -- far too abrupt & unsatisfactory ! Narration was fine, whether A.I. or not .. plenty of resonance ..

The “Doctor” and Felice were con artists. They successfully contrived to steal the very expensive vase while the young man’s uncle was in Europe.

There are no loose ends. The whole thing was a con job perpetrated in order to steal a valuable Chinese vase. The so called doctor and his pretty associate played an elaborate trick on the nephew in order to fool him into retrieving the priceless vase from the uncles collection and handing it over to them. At the time this story was written, there was a popular fascination with "spiritualism", in which mediums communed with ghosts. Belief in this sort of thing was becoming widespread, and even skeptics might suspect there could be something to it. So what could be more natural than that criminals would make use of this credulity.
