All division can be turned into multiplication by the reciprocal (multiplicative inverse), just like all subtraction can be turned into addition using additive inverses, then PEMDAS becomes PEMA. Also PEMDAS will kill you if you don't treat numerators and denominators as having "invisible" parantheses as 2+6/2 =5 while (2+6)/2 =4 yet it is often written without any parantheses in equation editors.

It is (4 + 40/2) 5 = 110. Solve within parentheses first, and everything to the left of a division sign is the numerator (above) and to the right the denominator (below). You add 4 + 40, So 44 is divided by 2 then multiply by 5. Basic math.

Using the PEMDAS rule: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication or Division (work left to right), Addition or Subtraction (work left right). So go to the Parenthesis first and using the rest of the PEMDAS rule, 40/2 = 20, then add the 4, which gives an answer of 24. Now multiply 24 by 5, this gives and answer 120. 120 is not shown as a possible answer, so we are lead to explore the meaning of 5! (5 factoral). 5! is another way of writing 120, as follows 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 .. 5 x 4 = 20, 20 x 3 = 60, 60 x 2 = 120, 120 x 1 =120. The answer is b 120 converted to 5!.

In order of operations, PEMDAS…. You start from left to right in parenthesis, You do multiplication then division always first after Parenthesis & exponents,….BUT if add or subtract are first in parenthesis, then you start from right to left instead because you multiplication and division first. Since adding is first here, you have to start from the right instead to keep the order of operations with PEMDAS.

Order of Operations: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication or Division ( working from left to right), Addition or Subtraction (working from left to right). Therefore, we must do all processes within the Parenthesis first, within the Parenthesis Division must be carried out before addition, thus 40/2 = 20, then 20 + 4 = 24. Now we have dealt with everything inside the Parenthesis we can now multiply 24 by 5, which gives the answer 120. Since 120 does not appear as a possible answer in this form we are lead to explore 5! since the other answers are incorrect according to the PEMDAS rule. 5! (5 factoral) means 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 ... 5 x 4 = 20, 20 x 3 = 60, 60 x 2 = 120, 120 x 1 = 120.

What purpose does a factorial serve?
@MrHotlipsholohanАй бұрын
@todradmaker4297 it is common to use Factorial functions to calculate combinations and permutations. Thanks to the Factorial you can also calculate probabilities.

@todradmaker4297 Factorials can be simple to compute and have many practical applications in the real world. For example, some companies use factorials to look at permutations and combinations for business purposes, like determining the number of trucks needed to supply their stores in each district.

No….I thought it was 40, you’d have to get rid of the parenthesis first, then work the problem multiplication

Dude...why didn't you make 120 one of the options? Youve made this explanation 100x more complicated than it needed to be.. This has to be modern common core math because I had the answer within 10 seconds. Ive been out of elementary school for 44 years and we used PEMDAS way back when.

For the elder ones here in Europe this matters as they mostly do not have problems to solve it. For the younger generations it doesn’t matter as the majority of their brains couldn’t make it anymore. In Australia it might be similiar but for the US I am not that sure…

Pemdas and bodmas are exactly the same, only different words. ❤
