The ending always made me cry as a kid. I don't know why. It's just such a powerful way to start the game.
@BiohazardCrow8 жыл бұрын
It has a meaning of all that. The two kings in the chess table mean they once were friends to each other and suddenly they start to figth. They escalate the conflict until the last were one king (or both) was killed. the lonley soldier at the end holding that king chess piece mean that he really loves the kingdom and it's ruler following to death. When he drop the king of his hands mean that he fail to protect the king and there is nothing left. Only death and destruction at the end.

Buğra Alparslan Well there was no age gaps for Kings. In medieval times in some regions you could become King at age 15 or at age 35-40 (If your father don't die and manage to go a healty life). Younger Kings were usually more dangerous than older Kings.

Me too. I remember my dad give me AOE as a birthday gif when I was little. Also buying the AOE2 from a Microsoft Store and playing boths games in Windows 95/98. Those games were in the Top list of the world by that time. Specially AoE 2 Label in the forums and the gamers magazines as the most buyed/playing game in the world. Almost as famous as WoW, Dota II or League Of Legends today.
@Skrapeg0at9 жыл бұрын
My family was rather poor when I was a kid. The only electronics we had for entertainment was a slow Packard Bell computer running Windows 95 and a television set that would fuzz out at random. We had a few games for the PC, including Corsairs: Conquest at Sea, Combat Flight Simulator, and of course Age of Empires. When I was four years old, I played Age of Empires for the first time, and I was instantly hooked. It was the only game I would play on a daily basis for years to come. When I was six, my father acquired a new job with much better pay. Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings has been out for about a year, and my parents finally had enough money to buy me a new game. They surprised me one day with Age of Empires II, which immediately became my new favorite game with thousands of hours spent playing it. My family didn't have very much money back then, but I was happy with the little we had. Age of Empires I & II were games to explore my massive imagination. I never got into AOE3, though, and sometimes I wonder if I'm missing out on anything.
@tohyahachijo40269 жыл бұрын
Check AoE III out if you can. It is not that history-ish anymore (i.e., it still deals with the history of the world at large, but the individuals it depicts are most likely written from the scratch, they are not actual historical figures), focuses on the Age of Discovery and early industrial revolution (so you can probably expect some wigs, rifles, pirates and native americans), but still manages to keep the spirit of the first two games.

First met you in 2002 on my very first PC with pentium 3 and of course no internet connection. Spent days and days trying to beat the campaigns. You are the only game I truly felt that I am achieving true victory. 18 years later I had to buy a gaming laptop just to install your DE and still enjoy every aspect of your game. If I have kids, once they grow up, you will be first game they ever play on a pc.

Damaskox To be honest, I like the cut version better, but certain unshown scenes from this version (eg. the relic part, and the trebuchet falling apart) should have been shown in the conquerors intro.
@tehgriefaa56410 жыл бұрын
Damaskox Ensemble studios always does this weird thing where their original games have a full intro sequence and the expansion packs have some weird cut version of the original. I'm not sure about aoe 3 but i know they did it for AOM and the first two AOEs

Not to mention the guy that drops the king peace, in the HD Addition that guy is actually wearing a crown which indicates the king is the only one left amidst the battlefield and ruins of what he once ruled.

sometimes, you do not need to upgrade your man-at-arms / some unnecessary unit when in insane multiplayer matches, Trebuchet would tear down castles fast AF while at Imperial Age players tend to built castles

@GoldieMethrans9 жыл бұрын
+SmoothCriminalAaron Also, the chess piece is a king, which carries a huge symbolic value as well. Really, poor poor soldier~
@Smogne9 жыл бұрын
+GoldieMethrans That piece is dropped by the King that is playing the Black pieces himself ( check their faces, they are the same person), and he drops the white king piece, not his black king piece ( the siege was on the white king's castle; the white king is dead).
@GoldieMethrans9 жыл бұрын
Miguel Alvim Oh, thank you for telling this, since really, until I saw the intro for AoE 2 HD where the "soldier" indeed appears as the King himself about a week ago, I always thought that he`s, well, a soldier. ^-^ Your answer is vastly appreciated.
@Chris-qo4rt8 жыл бұрын
Wasn't the siege on the "green" kings castle? since he placed a tower and it directly cuts to a castle, and when the white king moved on of his pieces the siege was shown... so i'm guessing the white king attacked the green but in the end lost (as shown in the end)
@Chris-qo4rt8 жыл бұрын
Also, the banners on the castle are green and the archers are wearing green robes. The attacking soldiers wears red (like the older king)

War. War never changes. With each of them end either with the demise of the king and/or the entire empire ... and the soldiers + innocents pay the biggest prize. ;) Just my interpretation.

I remember this, actually entirety of this. There was unofficial Polish version based on that build floating around in the late 90s-mid 00s. Unofficial = one guy with Russian accent voicing everything in a quite bored voice. Eventually got the retail version, though played that one as I didn't speak English well at that time.

This just came in my recommendations and holy crap my childhood memories hit me hard I remember seeing my brother play this game and me being a child not knowing what it was obviously it was a strategy game but he was playing through the campaigns and I just sat there blankly staring at the screen figuring out who Joan of Arc and all these other important people of history were. Recently I got back into age of empires 1 and soon thereafter I got 2 and suddenly all these real people actually made sense to me since I’ve already learned about them in history class and getting really invested into the game again I even battled my brother and of course got my ass whooped like 4 times I can’t wait for the new age of empires 2 remastered it looks so amazing and does the original game justice in terms of graphics
