It was unsure how exactly he died; all we know for certain is that he drowned in the Goksu river. Some sources say he fell off his horse from exhaustion, staright into the river, others say he did indeed jump into the river with his full armour on, underestimating the depth of the river.

The player wont be able to control the units. They stay AI and rub themselfs to death on that wall they are standing in front off. The only useful thing Richard does is providing a market for trade.

Hey Viper, a small tip: if you group a villager or a trade cart with a military unit, then send them on patrol and move the military unit away, the vil/cart will still be patroling, thus won't be idle.

TL;DR: I LOVED this mission when I was a kid. I'd tried to play the mission with my usual strategy (an initial strong defense as I built up a fighting force for a massive, overwhelming offensive), but that strategy went very...poorly. Everything went to sh*t almost immediately. CSB: At the 10-minute mark I began the fight outside of my encampment, in-between the Persians and the initial starting area, and almost immediately started getting pushed back towards the north; I was not expecting the bastards to be so aggressive. In short order, the enemies were knocking down and/or flanking the wall I had erected to slow down/prevent any direct attacks on my camp. And I realized that I just might be f*cked. I sent out cavalry units to scout for an escape & evasion route; enemies were crawling all over the edges of the map, it seemed, as if expecting exactly what I was planning to do. With the Saracens joining into the fray, my Teuton encampment was being completely annihilated; it was time to GTFO. We headed southwest. With only 3 villagers, 5 cavalry, and a pickled-potentate, the situation was not looking very good as I was evading groups of enemies, luring them away with the cavalry, and sacrificing some of the *very* few guys I had left in order to keep at least 1 villager alive along with our baron-of-brine. After a tense several minutes (that felt like an hour) of evasion and survival that would make any S.E.R.E trainer proud, there was a single villager and the goddamn sauerkraut-sovereign left. Onward they trekked, reaching a safe-ish area where I got another TC built along the southwestern border and began anew. Although it took awhile, I rebuilt my army, and coordinated an assault on Jerusalem via a single, small section of wall. Spearheading into the city, my guys hacked a bee-line through the dense cluster of houses while also using them as walls to protect their flanks. After making it to the Temple Mount with my army, I stopped the cart carrying the kimchi-king short. The Saracens and the Persians had damn near ground me into the ground. They'd caused me to creep around the map, hiding and running from their patrols; they had made life difficult for me and my men. I turned my guys loose on the city and let them raze it to the ground. Nothing was left standing except the Dome of the Rock. (Sorry for the short story, but this was one of my favorite gaming experiences to date; the tense, anxious feeling of barely keeping out of the jaws of complete defeat, and then being able grasp onto victory and beat the enemy to death with it was an awesome sense of accomplishment to my 12-year-old self).

I speedran this map in 11:35. Here's how: STEP 1: Immediately send all your army, villagers and "Emperor in a barrel" inside yellow's base when they're still ally. Build a castle right next to the yellow's "back wall" that's closest to Jerusalem. Simultaneously send some villagers to build houses so that you can train petards by the second the castle gets up (you're pop capped in the beginning of this mission). Build as many petards as you can while waiting for the yellow & green turn into enemies. Also build pieces of stone wall & random buildings all over yellow's base so that they will start attacking the buildings and not your precious paladin & petards when they turn. If you have enough petards to get through 2 fortified walls you can change the diplomacy to enemy yourself and maybe save few minutes. STEP 2: Crash through the yellow's wall and quickly send Emperor, rest of the petards & paladins (for protection & sucking arrow fire from towers) while your villagers and pikemen stay behind and sacrifice themselves. Walk down the map into blue wall and allahu-akbar your petards through it. Send Emperor straight at the blue wonder while paladins kill possible enemies around.

Great job! Now moving to greater campaigns. To answer the question: Richard triggers to attack once you bring a unit next to him. Like most triggers stuff happens only when you bring units/specific units next to stuff/area. I got no other tips, Mr Viper did what is the most efficient, convert all of yellow. After that it was a walk in the park, green doesn't bother with you much anyway. Advice for next set of campaigns, read carefully what the units tell you in game.

You can save bleda (and kill him afterwards) you can let him die to the boar or you just run away then you'll find villagers on the other side of the river. there's also a way to take the town AND get the villagers on the other side but i dont know how it exactliy works anymore

Richard has a largely for show battle against Saladin if you bring a unit to his camp. He's mostly there so you have a market to trade with. Also, in Saladin's army there are some Archers of the Eyes heroes from the Saladin campaign. :)

Yeah, it's definitely only for show if he's on his own. Depending on the way you play this scen, however, he can be very useful. For example, if you try to win this scen as fast as possible, one possible tactic is to move all your villagers nearby to his base (but not too close to trigger the event). At the 10 minute mark, THEN trigger it. While his forces (which usually get insta killed by Saladin's Siege Onagers, which you can kill quickly) work with yours, you can be working through Green's wall to get all your forces down to Jerusalem.

I remember playing this mission as a kid. I used my dad's save and started from there. He sort of made a little base with walls up around where you start. I made monks to convert the travelling elephants, and I was storing them back where the sheep were. It took me forever but eventually I had a huge army of just converted elephants that I then used to obliterate everything. It was fun.

I finished this mission in 7 minutes. Before the Saracens attack me, I built 2 castles as close as possible to Jerusalem then declared war to yellow to destroy their wall with petards, and did the same on the walls of Jerusalem. Then with minimal resistance, Barbarosa reached Jerusalem within less than 7 minutes :))

i used to station rams outside yellows castles and tc, and wall the rams in with the buildings so his cavalry cant hit my rams... and the starting pikes took out his onagers so yellow got fucked every time... i also walled all their gates with two layers and just boom like a boss 😂😂😂😂

My current record for beating this scenario is about 9 minutes and 52 seconds. I sent all my military and villagers to the far wall of Damascus, built a few siege workshops and castles, upgraded to onager, used a market to balance my resources, and sieged down their wall as an ally. That let me get near Jerusalem quickly, and then I used those castles I built to make a couple trebuchets, and then I knocked down one of Jerusalem's gates, poured all my units inside, and used my paladins to draw the fire of the enemy towers so that poor Frederick could make it to the Dome of the Rock unharmed. It takes practice to get it right, but it can be done! :D

Henry the Lion was definitely shown in a much worse light in this campaign than he deserves. He didn't betray Barbarossa in some campaign against the Polish and was instrumental in seizing of Crema and Milan. His "betrayal" of Barbarossa during the campaign against the Lombard League was only in that he refused to join because he was otherwise occupied securing his own borders and requested an, admittedly unrealistic, payment in order to make it worth his while. When Barbarossa ultimately failed to conquer Italy Barbarossa had Henry tried in absentia by a court of Henry's rival German princes and bishops. Unsurprising he was charged with insubordination and declared an outlaw. Henry's allies then abandoned him and he was ultimately exiled from Germany.

Apparently RIchard the Lionheart is triggered when you try to enter Jerusalem from the center of the map. He is there to help the player. His units join the fight with you.
