In which John Green teaches you about the presidency of Andrew Jackson So how did a president with astoundingly bad fiscal policies end up on the $20 bill? That's a question we can't answer, but we can tell you how Jackson got to be president, and how he changed the country when he got the job. Jackson's election was more democratic than any previous presidential election. More people were able to vote, and they picked a doozie. Jackson was a well-known war hero, and he was elected over his longtime political enemy, John Quincy Adams. Once Jackson was in office, he did more to expand executive power than any of the previous occupants of the White House. He used armed troops to collect taxes, refused to enforce legislation and supreme court legislation, and hired and fired his staff based on support in elections. He was also the first president to regularly wield the presidential veto as a political tool. Was he a good president? Watch this video and draw your own conclusions.

When you think about it from a purely American perspective Jackson was great. He expanded American territory and was a successful war hero. His fiscal policies certainly weren't the best but his military and political policies worked. From a moral perspective every expansionist conqueror was a horrible person. Jackson was bad for everyone else but very good for America.
@germtw
@germtw 8 жыл бұрын
+Goode Boyd However, these people were known to cause atrocities, were they not? Look at what Jackson did to due democratic process when the court ruled in favor of the native americans, he simply disregarded their decision. Do the ends justify the means? Would you be willing to have a select population suffer in order to benefit the elite in the country? (Sorry if I'm coming on a little strong, I mean no disrespect. But I'm genuinely intrigued)
@AdobadoFantastico
@AdobadoFantastico 8 жыл бұрын
+Goode Boyd Yeah, people forget this stuff. There seems to be a general rush to get to moral high ground on specific historical scenarios, but then people forget that these sorts of things were the norm for that age. It was ugly times all over.

Jackson called Adams a murderer, not the other way around. Background: Adams claimed that Jackson's wife was married to two men at the same time, using this as mud to insult Jackson in an action known as mudslinging (insulting political rivals). She had forgotten to sign the last page of her divorce document before she married Jackson. It was all settled, but after Jackson's election, before his inauguration, she died from a heart attack. Jackson claims that the stress fro the election and Adams insults killed her, but she did have a pre-existing heart condition. The end.

Andrew Jackson's relation's with Native American's is also interesting. Jackson and Rachel never had children. But they three adopted children. One was Rachel's nephew, the other two were orphaned Native American children. He also served as the guardian of 8 other children after their father died. Say what you want about his politics. But damn he had one depressing personal life. He lost his entire family before the age of 14. He was also a bad ass. He got into a duel with Charles Dickinson (Not the writer) after he wrote a paper that attacked his wife. He let Dickinson shoot first. He got his inches away from his heart. He then shot Dickinson fatally. So yeah, Fucking badass.

...You glossed over that the Native American land was recognized as countries by the US and that Jackson declared war and began to forcefully remove them without the approval of Congress. And that once he was told he couldn't do that he basically said "too bad, I have guns and an army and you don't." Yet another great thing to come out of Florida

It was interesting to learn more about Andrew Jackson; before this video, all I really knew about him was that he was a veteran, a president, and responsible in some way for the Trail of Tears. I still don't think highly of him (I don't think highly of people who march people to their deaths), but at least I know more about him.

For European History, could you please start making the crash course videos earlier so they aree completed before the May AP Exam?

One thing that is a bit misleading is your information about how Andrew Jackson vetoed the Bank's charter. The charter was actually set to run out in 1834, but instead of having it extended in 1834 (Because Jackson would reject it), Nicholas Biddle decided to attempt to have it extended in 1832, just in time for Jackson's reelection. For if Jackson had denied the extension, it would hurt his presidential campaign, therefore forcing Jackson (as Biddle thought) to Reinstate the 2nd National Bank for another term. But Jackson vetoed it, and told the American people that this was to create less of a gap between economic classes (Which pissed a lot of wealthy people off (A big reason that the Whig party was formed)). Also, Jackson never ran for president in 1836, that is an error. Jackson was initially elected in 1828, and reelected in 1832. Jackson respected Washington and his choice of Two Terms, and decided to aide Martin Van Buren in the election of 1836 against William Harrison.
@everyonefullofit
@everyonefullofit 4 жыл бұрын
Very right, except the 2nd bank charter was 1816 to 1836. Jackson would still be president in 36 if re-elected in 32. Almost no one understands this these days.
