Age of Reptiles is a comic series that takes place in the Mesozoic era, where we follow several different stories of different dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals as they deal with the day-to-day struggles of survival. While this comic is several stories documenting the lives of dinosaurs, it’s also a document of a media creator’s progress in his art style and story-telling abilities.

I love how the dinosaurs in Age of Reptiles had "Batman eyes" when they went into action, the pupils disappear to make them look more ferocious. Delgado is a great artist, very similar in style to William Stout.

sharks actually do smth similar in real life! they don't have eyelids so they roll their eyes back in their heads to protect them when they bite. i wonder if some dinosaurs or other prehistoric animals couldve actually done smth similar

I find it interesting how the series got more paleontologically accurate over time. In Tribal Warfare, there is is this mix of dinosaurs from different eras and locations and the dinosaurs have shrink-wrapped scaly skin and pronated arms. (Some of the dromaeosaurs do have quills though.) The Hunt takes place in Late Jurassic Morrison Formation, but still suffers from shrink-wrapped scaly skin and pronated arms. The Journey takes place in late Cretaceous North America and the skin doesn't seem as shrink-wrapped and the arms are no longer pronated. Finally, Ancient Egyptians is the most accurate of all.

The Tribal Warfare comic was also reprinted as a secondary story for the Jurassic Park comic magazine that was sold here in the UK, back in the day. I distinctly recall the fight between the Tyrannosaurs and Raptors in the rain being in one issue. In fact, I'm pretty sure that one was the last one of these Age of Reptiles strips to be reprinted in the Jurassic Park comic before being replaced with strips from Cadillacs and Dinosaurs.

10:10 I find it interesting that the author used an ichtyosaur in this part, considering that when people think of large marine apex predators from the Mesozoic, they usually think of pliosaurs or mosasaurs. This is somewhat realistic, since there were large ichtyosaurs that served as apex predators like Temnodontosaurus, though Temnodontosaurus was smaller and lived in deeper waters (I think). I don't know why, it just fascinates me.

What strikes me is how vibrant and colorful the dinosaurs themselves are. And a little anthropomorphism is forgivable since this is a visual medium without any sorta narrator to give us an insight into the dinosaurs' thoughts Ala something like Paleo. Kinda reminds me of Dinosaur Revolution and how they had the dinosaurs emote to a degree.

Delgado style is brutal: Its simple but at the same time its really detailed! I hope he will release more, delgado showed in his blog and social medias the artwork of carnotaurus, therizinosaurus and deinocheirus. I love all delgado stories, but my least fave is the Hunt, due the style turned more cartoonish (compared to tribal warfare and later stories) and this became more a revenge story but too human for my taste, but not all is bad! I like the camo ceratos, the aerial fight between pterosaurs and the massive tsunami. Also its me or the world of these stories have a feeling of primal show? No dialogue, brutality, beauty in the world. BTW: If you love delgado works check his dracula book and Hyeroglyph comic!

I loved Delgado's "Age of Reptiles" comics! I think I've got a full set, but it seems like every few years or so, I find out about one I've never heard of before. And you've just provided me with the two "shorts" I never knew about, before. And now I'm having a Hell of a time tracking them down. Anyone know which "Dark Horse Presents" I might be able to find them in? Amazon isn't being very helpful. I watched "Dinotasia," and thought that some of the humour in that struck me as very familiar -- especially the part where the mother Tarascosaurus(?) gets woken up by the smaller dinosaurs' yipping and seeks to shut them up -- and lo and behold, Ricardo Delgado was involved with that, too! If he decides to do another volume -- which would be amazing -- I hope it gets collected with the shorts.

Not related to Age of Reptiled at all but i think the first dino media i experienced that wasnt something like Jurrasic Park or Disneys Dinosaur. was probably DinoRiders a saturday morning cartoon from the 80s i think, where humans from the far future time travel to prehistoric earth in order to escape an evil alien faction who has tracked them down of course follows them through to the past and then they continue their war on prehistoric earth with both sides domesticating diffrent Dinos. I havent watched the show since i was kid with acces to a laptop in like 3rd grade sp my memory of what happens is a bit fuzzy, but its a pretty standard good vs the forces of evil story with the Aliens motivation being nothing but muahahahaha we want to to conquer the universe or something like that. I wasn't arguing with Ricardo, I'm was more arguing with everyone else who commented on this who some also happened to be former Disney artists. He did warn me to knock it off twice saying "All right we get it, you made your point." But I'm that kind of person in an argument who says he's not done until he says he's done and seen as in the right. So tigers are know to hold a grudge and kill for it to. There is a lot of literature to back that up. Elephants too can hold a grudge and seek vengeance. I had a graphic novel that had all four issues of Tribal Warfare and I kept going back to look at it again and again. All the dinosaurs do have names listed at the start of it. It's a bit hard to keep track of the raptors, but their patterns are all different and are kept consistent throughout the book. The leader of the Deinoychus, Dark Eye, isn't killed by the quilled one, Quetzel, but instead Quetzel kills a different raptor named One Claw, who I suppose was acting like a sycophant.

A lot of people have suggested it. Maybe 2023 will be the year I cover it...

1:07 Wonder if you know about some of his concept art shown for the Jurassic Park franchise (mostly the 3rd film)?

It’s good that you’re talking about this. I have the omnibus of this and the sequel Ancient Egyptians. This is a brilliant graphic novel. Delgado is an awesome artist and one of my main inspirations!

I remember reading age of reptiles: Tribal Warfare when I was a junior in high school two years ago and I loved it. Seriously though, someone needs to create a movie or a tv show based on these comics!

Definitely can say primal took some inspiration from age of reptiles, genndy tartokovsky stated that when he finished the story of spear and fang for possible future seasons of primal he would like to do an anthology of dinosaur stories Wich would be awesome

Really Wanna give this a read even if i must say i think i like the early Stories better with the dinosaurs being portrayed more as characters and having a kinda almost Movie dinosaur look to them, i also really like how they felt more like traditional Stories, the rest still looks great i Just wish so many authors and creators in this field wouldent seemingly always get so bogged down with scientific and paleological accuracy, there is room for both, and honestly i would love to see a modern project big or on the smaller side try and do something with old fashioned Movie dinos again, real old-school, scaly, upright, lumbering Tail-Draggers

I feel like the bull paralatitan was the way it was near the need of the fourth book due to the grief of the loss of its young and possibly the ego it would gain from being the biggest creature in its territory at the time

your channell is great. would you consider reviewing the novels that are considered as the foundations of the genre, a journey to the center of the earth, the land that time forgot, and conan'-doyle's lost world?

Absolutely. These early pieces of dinosaur literature have always fascinated me and I'm hoping to get to all of them eventually, somewhere down the line.

if you want something really interesting, look up March of the Mighty Ones. Early / mid 19970s British childrens comic strip involving two children trying to survive in a coutry over run by robot dinosaurs!

Do you think it's possible that a second printing of AGE OF REPTILES OMNIBUS VOLUME 1, this time including the missing stories in it, will be published in the future?
