I'm with you. After hearing this reaction as a major complaint about the movie I was surprised actually. Most people probably get this dark vibe due to the cheap instagram-filter all over the movie. That being said, I really liked Man of Steel.

I think those are a different kind of Dark considering they're R rated movies but in this sense....I think on a non R rated movie would be about it's serious tone that is being used.
@hectormarin5877

AKAHimself The only 'dark' concept that the Man of Steel inherits is its gray atmosphere and the gloomy texture of the visual effect's color. Conveying the ubiquity of hope and the genesis of a new dawn does not constitute malice as most perceive it to be. It is sad how nostalgia substitutes one's likability of cinema rather than enjoying the film for what it is, not for what it is supposed to be.

LarryBonson For the most part I think DC and Marvel are two sides of the same coin. Both companies are on opposite sides of the spectrum. Marvel has tended to go extremely comical while DC has tended to go extremely dark. Neither is bad but neither is balanced.

I don't think Guardians of the Galaxy was a good sci fi movie. I liked it, I think it's a good _movie_ but not a good _science fiction_ movie. I disagree with the idea that GotG scratched the sci fi itch. Even though Marvel has a huge following, I think Star Wars could still end up on top. Star Wars is an icon of human culture, there's a huge fanbase behind it, whereas Marvel seems to have gotten its bulk from newcomers that got sucked in by the newer movies and have no familiarity with the comics.
@Fortstorm
@Fortstorm 10 жыл бұрын
Nathan Holstrom Ok true, Star Wars might not technically be a sci fi series, but it contains everything people love about sci fi. Giant space battles, advanced technology, spaceships, hover-everythings, aliens etc. The only real difference is that there's no attempt to link it to reality. Frankly, I don't think proper sci fi will ever be more than a niche thing because most people won't actually know enough sci to understand the fi.
@sillymcwilly4866
@sillymcwilly4866 10 жыл бұрын
Star Wars isn't really sci fi either... well the films anyway, it isn't until you read the books and play the video games when it becomes sci fi and even then it's more fantasy. Guardians is the same way, until you read the comics it really doesn't hit that sci fi button.

I'm 17 years old and if I could only watch either AAoU or Star Wars, I'd pick Star Wars hands down. I think AAoU will win the box office though simply because many kids these days had to grow up with the prequels (and were turned off by them) and/or don't have the attention span to watch the originals

Flame war inbound. I preferred the prequels. Luke skywalker had no individual character traits he was just a chip of the block good guy. And vader betraying the emperor was dumb and came out of nowhere. Besides grievous and darth maul had better designs in my opinion. BTW I was alive for return of the jedi.

Chica the Chicken why are you saying flame war? it's what you want? Vader bertraying the emperor is like cliche asf dude, but not dumb. Vader just felt emotions to his sons. Grievous and Darth Maul had better designs because... year of creation of the prequel trilogy with the original trilogy is way off different. Bruh

I'm twenty and grew up on both generations of Star Wars. Loved all the old ones. As for the prequels 1 was my favorite movie in the entire franchise 2 was OK 3 was beyond terrible. I'm on the fence about seven. I've also read the entire Age of Ultron comic storyline in the Age of Ultron compendium book I got at my local comic store and I don't think a movie can really do it justice, or Thanos for that matter. All in all, though I think the Avengers will be better than the new Star Wars. Also, I totally grew up watching Pee-Wee's Playhouse.

Although Cap winter soldier was palpably darker than preceding marvel movies, I feel like Avengers age of Ultron will be a lot more grave and dark than anything we've seen before in a marvel movie. This could also be the first time we see a marvel film where the villain prevails and also one which holds more psychological edge than other marvel films. Just looking at Ultron from the trailer, he'll set a more creepy and terrifying spin on the marvel universe which will lead to destruction, not of buildings, but of the Avengers themselves.

The Avengers versus Star Wars debate was good. Strong point about young people watching comic book films over and over. Perhaps we should consider that the parents of these young people grew up with Star Wars IV-VI and will be eager to take their kids to a family movie to share their love of the original cast, these kids may then choose to watch them again...

Do the people at Screen Junkies know that movies exist outside of geek culture. I dig the energy and vibe you guys give off, but I wish it was more focused on a wider ranger of topics. Can you speak about westerns, musicals, and avant garde films? What about international cinema? What about movies from past era's of hollywood like the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's? I think you'll eventually burnout your audience if all you do is speak about superhero movies and fantasy properties every week. Again, I like the show. I just wish the content was a bit more varied.

Man of steel was great for the representation of what DC is trying to achieve What don't you people get. MARVEL: Are Mutants or accidents that become these heroes and have other worldly adventures with some dark overtones at times but mostly light. I've got to disagree with Spencer though at 4:09. Because if the Marvel Cinematic Universe is to remain interesting, it NEEDS better, more interesting villians. Otherwise, like Mundy said in 'How to Fix Marvel', they will have to keep relying on Loki to deliver a good plot for the Marvel films. The plots will just keep repeating the same structure of: 1. Everything's cool 2. Bad guys emerges 3. Fight (Hero loses) 4. Figure out how to beat him 5. Fight again (Hero Wins) I think it would be more interesting if the heroes don't always win EVERY last fight. This opens up potential cliff hangers like in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. I also have to disagree with Hal Rudnick at 8:09. I cannot think of one single film that was a re-boot or extension of a film made before the 90's that was better or even as good as the originals. The Age of Ultron will dominate it a lot easier as it has so much less to risk and the cast is so much better, hands down. And not to mention, a better supportive fan-base to date (especially after the bad response given to the prequels of Star Wars). I have to sit on the fence a bit with what Spencer is saying at 10:20. Yeah, i have to say: It would bring back a lot of nostalgia when we see Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford on the big screen again. But i think one thing is forgotten here. The last time they were in such a big movie was in 1983. Just over 30 years ago. I don't think they'll still have it after that long and with all due respect, their acting skills were nothing of legend anyway. There were no amazing quotes that i can think of from any of them in the Star Wars films. Except maybe Harrison Ford at times. So i have to agree with Dan at 11:20.

Best slasher film is Dale and Tucker Versus Evil. Not only because it's hilarious, but because we see this amazing double-reversal of all the slasher cliches. The initial cliches: A creepy cabin in the woods, psycho hillbillies, the drunken frat guys and girls, etc... It's somewhat expected to see those reversed and the psycho hillbillies are actually cool dudes. But then the second reversal of those cliches where we see the head frat boy become the cliche'd indestructible madman with a chainsaw, strapping the heroine to a board to be cut in half. It's truly a fantastic play on the entire genre. Avengers will crush everything at the box office. Marvel is currently the golden goose and I think that the magic of Star Wars was in the fact that there had never been anything quite like it. Once you finish up the plot of the original trilogy, revisiting it will never net you the same frenzy, unless you bring something new to the table. And by new, I don't mean more lens flares. No, We don't need another Pee Wee movie. I really doubt anyone would actually care enough to go see it. There's more than enough long-since-relevant nostalgia running around these days without Pee Wee Herman's return. Johnny Depp can't really be taken seriously anymore. He'd need, as it was said, his Scorsese to lift him up and make him something other than a self-parody. He is still a good actor, but he needs to break away from Burton before I can take him seriously ever again. Look at the last decade of his work and other than Sweeney Todd and Public Enemies, there's not much there that wasn't a shitfest. Rango, being animated, doesn't really count. (By the way, the movie you couldn't remember is The Rum Diaries. It sucked.) Nightmare Before Christmas is totally a Halloween movie. 90% of it takes place in Halloween Town. It's a fun movie, but it was a bit too dark to be a Christmas movie, as evidenced by the fact that it wasn't even released under Disney, but under Touchstone, because it's NOT a Christmas movie, or if it is it is a VERY twisted Christmas movie. The fact that Jack, in the end, accepts his place as the Pumpkin King and the purveyor of all things creepy and terrifying shows that it is a celebration of Halloween as it's own holiday, without having to be as great as Christmas Clue was a good movie. So, by definition, yes, a movie based on a board game can be good. However, I don't see the odds being at all good of any other board game movie successfully following in Clue's footsteps. I can't even fathom any other board game that could follow in Clue's footsteps. 99% of games are automatic fails, because you need some sort of concept to build off of; a murder, a shootout, something. So, those are my answers for some of the questions. Also, as for good comedy sequels, 22 Jump Street is a pretty good one. Harold and Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay and Wayne's World 2 are also good examples.

Not really. The best comic book movies have great stories. Look at Watchmen, Sin City, The Dark Knight trilogy, etc. A fairly ignorant statement tbh.
@yan008
@yan008 10 жыл бұрын
Sin City isn't relevant anymore. Only Watchmen on your list contains only quality plot. It's ironic since Alan Moore dislikes superheroes movies, yet he created the best superhero story yet. Also Watchmen was meant to not to be adapted on big screens. TDK just got lucky with some twist and turns, the sequel sucked. Only there to make money hence the title - ''The Dark Knight Rises''
@cornking6
@cornking6 10 жыл бұрын
yan008 What? How is it not relevant? What a terrible argument. It doesn't matter if it came out years ago, a good film will stand the test of time, you can't just write off my point because you can't think of a better reason. Also, the entire Trilogy was solid. TDKR didn't "suck" it was just bloated. To say TDK "got lucky" also doesn't make sense, it was very well made and had some excellent acting, hence why it did so well. Also, I'd like to add V for Vendetta and Akira to my list.
@yan008
@yan008 10 жыл бұрын
Sin City is not relevant, because Frank Miller got too busy focusing on whores and violence. Saying TDK got lucky is logical because of TDKR. TDK has twists and pay off that catched audience by surprise, TDKR proved that they just made it to make more cash. V for Vendetta is horrible compared to comic counterpart. Hugo Weaving and John Hurt were outstanding, I admit that. Those three movies on your lists are adaptation or based on comic book. Which doesn't make it more relevant being quality storytelling,

yan008 Actually, The Dark Knight series was originally supposed to be two movies. Nolan's goal was to make a grounded and realistic superhero story that had never been seen in cinema, and he accomplished his goal. Rises was where it departed from his original goal, he didn't even want to do it. The passion that was in the first two was gone and he forced himself to make it. I can agree with what you say about it, but the first two are amazing

Avengers: Age of Ultron looks promising, with a far better script than The Avengers. I think that X-Men: Days of Future Past shows how you can make a movie with dark story, but with a good direction, so it never feels depressing. My only concern is that in AOG, Quicksilver has an uninspired blur effect, and I don't see a real sense of speed.

The Johnny Depp movie you guys wanted to remember was The Rum Diaries and it was in Puerto Rico not Cuba and the reason the movie sucked was because it deviated like 90% from the book. i share that guy's feeling. avengers 2 trailer did kinda make me worry about it. like i kept thinking is this gonna be one of those things were we watch it looking for something to beat the first avengers movie and when badass things like "puny god" or w/e don't happen in this movie and people say the movie sucks. but that all changed. Phase 3 announcement. Cap 3 Civil War. When I saw that avengers 2 is pretty much gonna lead into the Civil War i was sold on it. I think it'll be great and it won't fall into that pitfall and get compared to the other movie. star wars is a dead series. they need to let it go. if anything i kinda hope they do like a remake of 1 thru 3 with better writing and a reworked timeline. but def nothing like what they are doing. i think ima skip the movie myself. i mean i saw who the new kids on the block are and its not like the chick's that hot. there's nothing going for it

Round 1: I swear Star Wars will break the bank. Guardians of the Galaxy certainly whetted appetites for a space opera, but in the end, it still didn't have that Star Wars signature and that's what most audiences like to be familiarized with. Even if it turns out to be less than zero as a film, nostalgia will drive this film's bank from viewings and re-viewings. Round 2: John Wick. I like Speed and Point Break and The Matrix has to catch me at the right mood, but John Wick has taken to adopting the deftness of the Raid films in terms of action choreography and camerawork and the world-building of Brian K. Vaughan to a more subtle sense of this giant hitman network. Round 3: Probably. Every once in a while, he gets a role and performance that is worth a damn like Rango. But I doubt Johnny Depp really cares anymore. He is doing whatever movies he feels like doing and, unlike Nic Cage, doesn't have to do them for money. Round 4: The existence of any Terminator property beyond Judgment Day shows so much contempt for the concept and disqualifies the whole message of the franchise to begin with and the idea of changing the world. We're so far gone with that that I don't give a fuck if Arnold is in it or not. Round 5: I don't care. I was never attached to Pee Wee. Round 6: Christmas undoubtedly. Nightmare Before Christmas devotes more to involving the Halloween aesthetic to the Christmas ideals, while still giving enough room for Christmas aesthetic, that it overwhelms that whole picture. Round 7: Movies based on anything can be good if you actually give a damn. Clue is a proof that a movie based on a board game can be good. Round 8: Definitely Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). So documentary like that, in spite of having pretty little bloodshed, it involves us in the violence of the moment and makes us flinch at nothing. As well as the gorgeously ugly sunbaked aesthetic that gives the movie its extra dirty feel.

I really dislike the whole “adjusted for inflation” thing. It is completely misleading. Gone with the Wind was released in 1939, but re-released again & again, at least 10 times between 1940 & 1998. It stayed in theaters for decades. So was Star Wars. I was a child when the original was 1st released in ‘77. It was re-released in ‘80 just before Empire. Empire was re-released in ‘83 just before Jedi. All 3 were “re-mastered” & re-released in ’97 just before Phantom Menace. All those ticket sales are included in that “Adjusted for inflation” count. Not exactly the same is it?

There's always 1 person going with another persons argument or Mundy being too emotional to give an "other side of the coin" opinion with tact. Look at the Best Keanu film section. You guys kinda just turned it into which character was keanu reeves able to be the dumbest more horrible actor in. I for one found it interesting that no one defended keanu. I understand why people dont like him and say that he cant act but he's no bokeem woodbine. This is kind of the same thing that happened with the Johnny Depp Conversation, and many of the others in the previous episodes. @TheGuyThatsAwesome 9 жыл бұрын
That fact that it was re-released "4 freaking times" as you so eloquently put and people STILL went to see it in swarms should make it easy enough to see how popular the movie is. If they re-released any other movie, it still wouldn't make as much money as Star Wars.

TheGuyThatsAwesome That's bunch of bullshit. Movie theatres re-released movies all the time back then, even really bad ones. There wasn't as much competition in theatres back then as there is today. And Gone With the Wind actually did make more money than Star Wars via re-releasing. Going by your logic, we should expect a Gone With the Wind sequel to outperform Star Wars 7.
@TheGuyThatsAwesome
@TheGuyThatsAwesome 9 жыл бұрын
You're an idiot. There were a lot less theaters around back in 1977, even less in 1939. Movies were re-released to meet the demand of customers, who continued to pay to see those movies long past their original theatrical releases. The fact that they were re-released doesn't make it less impressive that they made as much money as they did. It's no different than them staying in theaters. Also, I never made any indication on how I thought Star Wars 7 would perform at the box office as compared to a sequel to Gone with the Wind (How you came to that conclusion, I don't know), I was simply pointing out the idiocy of your statement that just because Star Wars was re-released, it means that it doesn't deserve to be one of the highest grossing movies ever.
@ericstaples7220
@ericstaples7220 9 жыл бұрын
TheGuyThatsAwesome I didn't say you compared Star Wars to Gone With the Wind. Do you have trouble reading? I said I was taking your logic and applying it to a ridiculous situation to prove the hole in your logic. It's not hard to figure out, but it clearly went over your head. Why tell me there were less theatres back then, when I already brought that point up and countered it myself? Having more theatres today is easily balanced out by factors like having more movies being released as competition, having other forms of entertainment to compete with movies (like cable TV, internet, and video games), and not to mention a large number of people pirating movies over the internet. And I didn't say Star Wars doesn't deserve to be one of the highest grossing movies of all time. So claiming I made that idiotic statement and arguing against it again proves your trouble reading. The point I made is that a movie, which has been released multiple times, should not be compared to movies that have only had one release thus far. Compare a movie's first release to another movie's first release for a FAIR comparison. You don't think Avengers would make a lot more money than it currently has, if they pulled a George Lucas and changed a few things in it and re-released it in theatres? Oh, and you're clearly stupid, since you resorted to name-calling. Good job.
@TheGuyThatsAwesome
@TheGuyThatsAwesome 9 жыл бұрын
Eric Staples 1. Again, you're inferring something completely different from what I stated. Here's what you said, "Going by your logic, we should expect a Gone With the Wind sequel to outperform Star Wars 7." Here's my response, " I never made any indication on how I thought Star Wars 7 would perform at the box office as compared to a sequel to Gone with the Wind". 2. Here's your exact first comment, "The reason Star Wars has the 2nd highest domestic box office gross in history is because it's been released 4 freaking times and it's only so high when you add up all 4 separate releases." Here's your exact second, "That's bunch of bullshit. Movie theatres re-released movies all the time back then, even really bad ones. There wasn't as much competition in theatres back then as there is today. And Gone With the Wind actually did make more money than Star Wars via re-releasing. Going by your logic, we should expect a Gone With the Wind sequel to outperform Star Wars 7." As mentioned in your third comment, "Why tell me there were less theatres back then, when I already brought that point up and countered it myself?". There is no mention of that point anywhere in your first two comments. Maybe you meant to put but forgot it, in which case we have a misunderstanding. 3. I apologize for not making the overly convoluted inference that "The point I made is that a movie, which has been released multiple times, should not be compared to movies that have only had one release thus far.", which is a fair point, but wasn't made clear enough, or even alluded to whatsoever. 4. Even taking away all the re-releases, Star Wars still made a shit-ton of money, however you try to rationalize it. Mind you this was a time where Jaws had just recently hit theaters, the Roger Moore James Bond films were at a commercial high, the first Star Trek movie was released soon after, Christopher Reeve Superman wasn't far off, and Stallone's Rocky was still fresh. Star Wars outgrossed all of them and then some. 5. Yes, I did resort to name calling in my second comment, which I do apologize for as it was unnecessary and didn't help my cause.

Hey guys, this video is the reason why I first registered on youtube a minute ago, because during the debate you missed one crutial thing: Ultron! I don't know if I am too straight forward here, but how can you name this episode "Age of Ultron debate" and don't talk about Ultron? To be honest, I don't know the background of Ultron but in this case I don't care, because what concerns me is actually the cast of Ultron: JAMES SPADER!!! After one minute into this video I stopped to watch the trailer and after the first words of Ultron I was freaking out, because I recognized JAMES SPADER!!! This man is a god when it comes to voice acting! Has anyone seen him in Boston Legal? He wins, just because of his voice! And he was Daniel Jackson in the Stargate movie and he is awesome in "The Blacklist"! So, coming back to the debate with this title, in my opinion you should have had a round about the actor playing Ultron or giving him his voice! I mean we are talking about an antagonist who is going to punch the Avengers in the face, so there is lots of potential for a debate about this villain, because of his impact and his background as being indestructable and so on... This could have been a great opportunity to talk about James Spader. I don't know how popular he is in the US, but he is a brilliant actor and, even if I am repeating myself, his voice in the trailer of "The Avengers - Age of Ultron" is just AWESOME!!! Just wanted to let you know ;-) Thanks for this cool debate and happy Halloween!

Although my love for Star Wars greatly outweighs my love of Marvel movies. Avengers is the trending thing, and the first Avengers was such a huge hit, and I also love Joss Whedon's work. Everybody knows that Marvel is on a roll, and that's because they make fun movies, and they managed to pull off serious movies very well with Winter Soldier. With this generation of kids, they've all seen the prequels, and either they loved it and then rewatched it and realized how mediocre the prequels are, or possibly haven't seen it at all. 2015 is going to be a rich year for Disney. However in the long run with the 40+ Superhero movies coming out. Marvel and DC are both going to suffer from oversaturation thus it'll probably have a decline, and maybe depending on how well Star Wars VII performs perhaps we can see a return of Star Wars.

Ok.... I have 4 topics to comment on on another great episode. 1st topic: Let's first start with the Terminator topic: Arnold all the way baby!!! How can you make a movie without Arnold? I mean if it is the future and these robots are created and sent back in time that means Arnold and Robert Patrick and the girl from part 3 need to be in every sequel because there are multiples of them. Also, and most IMPORTANTLY, the title. Genisys is a great title. Why you ask? Because the whole war starts when a self aware computer system goes online. A what? a compter SYSstem. Hence Genisys(tem). Clever. 2nd topic: Best Keanu Reeves movie. Not mentioned at all was this gem from the 80's. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (and the sequel). I mean Keanu can't act well but in these he didn't need to, he just had to be himself. 3rd Topic: Pee-Wee. Just for correction. Paul Ruebens never got busted for Child Porn. He was arrested for masturbating in a movie theatre. Completely different. 4th topic: Best slasher film. There are many ways to do this. How many moves did each make? Percentage of good vs bad ones? What came first? Who was scariest? But isn't the idea for a best slasher film to be which ones would be the most fun and rewatchable? I mean if you can't rewatch it or it isn't that fun then how does that make for the best slasher series. Nightmare on Elm Street had a great first, a decent third and a fantastic 7th film. Halloween had the first (maybe the second? It's up in the air...), the third doesn't count, H2O and Rob Zombie's first remake (also up in the air). But as a whole a fun series these do not make. Hands down it has to be Friday the 13th as the best slasher series. You've got part 1, a classic, then parts 2-4 which all take place in one night and are a blast from start to finish, skip 5 and you have part 6 which is awesome, then 7 is crap but the kills and Jason make it fun. Once again parts 1-6 (with a downhill drop in quality for part 5) are such a blast of fun slasher fun that they hands down win best slasher franchise. There is no question. Think about it this way. If you were asked to close your eyes and picture the perfect slasher film, with all the tropes that were needed to make it so, you would probably either imagine Friday the 13th part 2 or part 4. Enough said

You guys need to understand that board games go way beyond monopoly and battleship. There are likely thousands of new games coming out this year at Essen alone. They have themes ranging from organized crime to pirates to discovering a new continent to the Cthulu mythos. All of which would make a great story. A common stigma board games carry. Stop buying board games at Walmart. There's so much better out there.

".... board games a barely a thing anymore...." are you kidding me? At least be open to other hobbies other then just the things your interested in.

Totally, Rex Kross. Board games are in a huge surge right now. And has some if the most devoted fans who strive to evangelize the hobby so others can see beyond Clue and Candyland and Monopoly. To games like Dominion and Suburbia and Takenoko..

Gamer Pip The only board games that have enough name recognition to reach a wide audience would turn out to be horrible movies. All of these new board games that have come out may be fantastic games, and some of them might even be able to supply a good movie narrative, but they just aren't popular enough to be given a movie.

It seems like Hollywood is scraping for new ideas lately. I think audiences would embrace the unfamiliar. I think that was a big part of Guardians of the Galaxy's success. It was a new story. Unlike another spiderman movie where you already know what is going to happen. I could see a great movie based in the Arkham Horror setting for example...

Gamer Pip If the problem is Hollywood unoriginality, then adapting even obscure board games certainly doesn't help that. If anything, it would just be viewed as a desperate move.

There isn't a person who goes to see Star Wars that won't also go see avengers age of ultron. However, everyone who goes to see avengers won't necessarily go see Star Wars. That's pretty undeniable but nobody raised it. Star Wars keeps rolling out movies and they stink. I'll still see it, but I'll rent it from my living room on my laptop when it's $2 on iTunes. Christopher Nolan's Interstellar looks amazing! That's a movie I can't wait to go see, by the way!

"Keeps rolling out"? I don't think you can say that compared to Marvel.

Nathan Holstrom Who said anything about forgetting them? And I think you'll find plenty of people who would describe Marvel's activities as "rolling out".

The reverse is more true. Everyone will see Star Wars but not everyone who does will also see avengers age of Ultron in name only
