In America there are many course that prep you for your FAA license for power plant cert. if you have experience in the industry there are two week cram course to prep you for the test only and set up a test date and help you through it. If you have no experience you can take those course that you are talking about. Most of the places for work Ive found care more about experience then a certification because they will hire you at lower pay for probation period to get the licence once you get it then you come off the probations period. if your young military 4 year contract in the USAF jet techs jobs will give you all the experience you need and also allow you to have security clearance to work with almost any company in America. 14 years jet tech and still learning its not a job its a hobby that pays love the channel.

Re theory as opposed to just being shown how to remove and replace. I was in Tucson (79?) when an A-7 crashed into the University. Talk on the flightline was that they had had several low fuel pressure lights on prior flights. The newbees cleaned out the screen which was full of aluminum shavings and no one thought that was unusual. The fuel pump eventually ate itself up.

The system in the states is a bit different to how you do it in Canada. Here, an FAA certificated part 147 maintenance school is the only legitimate academic route. Many community colleges and technical schools offer such a program, but a potential student should be sure to check their certification; most schools will display their certificate prominently. After the student completes the FAA approved curriculum of at least 1900 hours' instruction, usually equally split between practical and classroom training, they may test for their Airframe and Powerplant certificate, which is both a foot in the door into the big industry and also a legally required license to do repairs outside of the context of a part 145 certificated repair station. Alternatively, 30 months of supervised work experience can qualify a prospective mechanic to test for their A&P, but expect to do several weeks of intensive studying in that case. The A&P tests cover literally everything from grade A cotton wing coverings and rotary engines to advanced composites and FADEC gas turbines. We don't have a booklet like what CCAA provides, instead there is a catch all restriction that a mechanic cannot independently complete a task they haven't satisfactorily completed under supervision before. Frankly our system is outdated and at times laughable. Just ask any A&P about checking the level of an R12 refrigerant system in the presence of an open flame.

Always entertaining. I have learned so much watching your videos though I may never work on an aircraft type turbine engine. I have long wanted to build a turbojet engine based on a supercharger ever since seeing one (a pair actually) being marketed to defrost frozen railway switches. All my spare time and reading back then focused on the machines I was designing, not jets. Since then I have seen many amateur builds of turbojet engines on KZbin but none seemed in any way practical (600mph leaf blower anyone?) and many seemed genuinely dangerous. Having sold my business I have started thinking again about building an engine using a secondary turbine to turn a mechanical output, perhaps driving a hydraulic pump. Electronic controls have become much more accessible in recent years which could really help make this project functional and safe. Your videos have opened my eyes to how much I *Don't* know about theory and guided me toward the information sources I need. I fully understand why you don't go into full detail on service procedures. If I blow myself up, well, that's fully on me. Not everyone thinks like that though. Thank you for your videos and the effort you put into them. Best wishes for a happy and profitable new year.

Hey, agent Jay, love shows! - 2 jet questions: do oil pumps have a sump? what happens from gravity if plane inverted? 2) I believe 14:1 air/fuel mixture on gas engine stoichiometrics. Do modern jet engines have device/ electronics to shoot for that ideal number similar to car computer?
@AgentJayZ5 жыл бұрын
Turbine engines are "dry sump", meaning all oil is pumped to a separate reservoir by scavenge pumps. The inverted flight question is always asked, tiresome to explain, and is dealt with in several videos on my channel. 2) like a campfire, or a candle, jet fuel is burned in an environment of excess oxygen. The flame takes what it needs, and there us no mixture control.

Odd question for you. Has anyone ever used an engine that runs on natural gas and ran afterburners on a natural gas engine or even jet fuel and natural gas? I’m sure there would be any use using afterburners in an industrial environment just curious if you would have a loss or gain in power with natural gas and jet fuel afterburning or the other way around.
@grahamj91015 жыл бұрын
Quite recently, a contributor told us that he worked with an Industrial Trent engine that had a reheat/afterburner arrangement in the gas turbine exhaust in a combined cycle plant. I don't think that he mentioned the fuel, but I have no doubt that it could have been either liquid or gaseous - or both. There are numerous aero-derived industrial gas turbines in use that are dual fuelled. The Industrial Olympus that AgentJayZ has shown us in the past had a dual fuelled version. This meant that it could change over from diesel to natural gas while running at power and it could even run on a proportioned mixture of the two. I have discussed the principle of having a reheat/afterburner arrangement in the duct between a gas generator and its power power turbine in the past. I carried out a design concept study on such an arrangement many years ago. It is perfectly feasible and would provide a substantial increase in power. However, it would be relatively inefficient, for the same reason that an afterburner in a jet engine is inefficient. It would also be an expensive means of producing an increase in power and the engine would be even more inefficient if it was run with the reheat/afterburner shut down.
@ke6gwf5 жыл бұрын
A natural gas fired Co-Gen plant I worked at had an afterburner of sorts, but it was past the turbine. It ran the waste heat from the turbine into a boiler to create steam for the multiple facilities, including heat and a/c, and on very cold and very hot days the turbine didn't create enough heat, and so the afterburner would light up to add additional heat for the boiler.
@grahamj91015 жыл бұрын

@AgentJayZ5 жыл бұрын
That's an oil scavenge pump from a J79. Almost every country on the planet uses metric and almost every modern engine made is metric. Aviation in general has a tradition of using imperial units because of the major role that was played for so long in developing standards and procedures by the USA, and the UK.
