Distinct is used to show all the values at once...min and max are used to show minimum and maximum values respectively.. When used simultaneously, select distinct max (marks) from student; it will display the maximum marks after removing duplicate values..

For example, in student taable....address column values are Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and there are repeating... the output will be 3.. (Count the distinct values) Hope it's clear now....
