Private Equity firms buy planes and lease them to airlines. The only difference between Delta and Spirit is who is willing to lease the plane at a given age in the planes lifespan. For example, Delta is leasing the plane directly off the lot for 5 years, then American or United lease the plane and modify the branding and interior, and so on and so on. Spirit just leases 20 year old planes that have been put through the ringer and jam more seats inside to help them recoup costs of leasing and selling cheap tix.
