The ballet from Oklahoma is discussed and performed. Agnes is funny and charming!

I like that she describes the plot as whom the girl will take to the picnic and not whom she will accompany.

How can anyone see these golden age musicals and NOT fall in love with them?

A master choreographer.

I had the great privilege of working with Gemze de Lappe, the "Dream Laurie," when she choreographed Houston Grand Opera's production of Carousel in 1990. Ms. de Lappe remounted the original De Mille choreography, which is NOT what you see in the movie. She had inherited all of Agnes de Mille's personal choreography notes after the great lady died. I was the pianist for all the dance rehearsals in that production, and I will never, ever forget that wonderful experience. Gemze was a joy to work with, and the choreography was stunning. I wept when I watched the ballet onstage with orchestra for the first time.

Gemze was a dear friend and she is missed. I was the Carnival Boy in the Goulet touring production in the 90's. I have allot of material.

Dianaemanuel talent has gone downhill and they try to change the stories and history of the great Musicals like the recent revision of Carousel.

Agnes talks about the stage version. Nothing about, however, the film version, where she also leads the dances.

As i understand it, the adaptation was a fairly close one, overseen by R&H personally, and so I'm thinking that outside of some location changes (esp. early in Act I), that the film content was as nearly as possible identical to the stage production - including, I'd then think, the dance numbers themselves. (Of course, I don't remember the actual source program for this interview - maybe it was focused only on Broadway? That part idk, sorry, but hope this sheds at least a little light.) And just to say: what an absolute jewel Agnes de Mille was!

Read the chapter on the filming of Oklahoma in the Agnes deMille bio "No Intermissions" by Carol Easton.
