Jane Fond at her best, as she maneuvers the interest of her profession as a doctor and the dogma and mission of a religion often unseen from the inside. Meg Tilly fills the screen and carries the freight in this movie, adapted from a stage presentation to become the equal to silence of the lambs or Fargo in memorability. The tension between Jane Fonda and Anne Bancroft explored all the secrets of the Martha Livingston existence and that scene in the gazebo with the cigarette was priceless. Anne Bancroft immediately earned my support as she mournfully wept over the wastebasket in the beginning of the movie. Besides the ultimate mystery of the movie plot, the question that remains with me to this day is "was that Meg's real singing voice ?".
