Just use Google translate and listen to how a swede would say the names if you really want to learn the "correct" swedish pronounciation. These videos you are refering to, with different and all of them "strange" pronounciations, are just rubbish and that includes ALL of the interviews in english with the abbas themselves! They are butchering their own names to make it more easy for english speakers to follow along!! Swedish Ö is pronounced like the english vowel-sound in burn (börn) learn (lörn) earn (örn) girl (görl) yearn ( close to "jörn"----------- now just add a B infront and you have Björn - B yearn ) Swedish short A is pronounced like the english vowel U sounds in cut (katt) fun (fann) but (batt) run (rann) gun (gann) f*ck (fack) the tricky part with Agnetha: Swedish g´s inside of words are soft g´s. And to make that "easier" to say we push in a N before the G so in pronounciation it becomes ANG the second part is just plain NETA (the h is silent) vowel sounds just like english pronounciation of META but with a longer E) No diphtongs like some spanish sounding nieta. its just Ang...................neta

The fact that you're posting a video about the pronunciation of Agnetha and Björn's names while the latter is celebrating his birthday today (79 years old on April 25th) makes this hilariously fitting... It made me think of Barbra Streisand's own frustrations with people mispronouncing her last name in the early years of her career. (Barbra: "It's 'Strei-SAND!' You know, like 'sand on the beach?!'") 😆 Thanks for this quirky little video...

I mean You can of course pronounce ABBA any way you want to 👍 But this video, kind of, is about pronouncing swedish names in swedish. And then Avocado A´s would be wrong. Both the long and the short A in avocado. Most europeans would get it "right" just prounouncing it in their own language (excluding Denmark and France) lots of english speaking africans also get it "right" for some reason. Americans? Never 🙂

OMG, the muppet lobsters is the best thing ever. I grew up watching the Muppets. What's interesting though is that in a day when a lot of stars change their names to something other than their birth name for ear-catchiness reasons, the ABBA folks ignored that trend. I guess there would be no reason for them to do that when their music was so fantastic.
@popcornphilosopher

Yeah, it doesn’t really matter! I mean, even their name which didn’t really mean anything at all. It was just an acronym, right? Really none of that stuff matters if the music is good! But I suppose it’s all the elements put together. I just love them Muppets!

You are lovely and do try, that's obvious! 😂 But I guess you guys don't hear what we Swedes hear/say. Agnetha herself said it just right (of course) before she gave those simplified alternatives and Björn said it perfect too. The rest is swenglish versions. By the way, Björn is indeed pronounced like Björk with a Ö not a O. If you say his name correct in Swedish. Bjorn is a swenglified version as well. So Agnetha (Ang-neta) and BjÖrn. ❤
@popcornphilosopher
@popcornphilosopher 7 ай бұрын
Oh, OK! Thank you for that! That makes so much sense! I don’t know if you know, but why do some of members say it differently? Benny for instance? I thought maybe there might be different accents from different regions or something?
@GuinevereKnight
@GuinevereKnight 7 ай бұрын
@@popcornphilosopher Hope it helps. There are small variations, some say words harder, some softer etc., depending on dialects and how we all are a little bit different as individuals I guess. (Benny though born in Sthlm grew up in the same place as Frida, and they all speak pretty much the same dialect even though they were born in different places. Kind of "Stockholmska", where three of them still live and where I also live. So it feels like pretty small variations in Swedish.) The biggest differences here I think depend upon English speaking skills and how accurate they try to be. Her name, since it is a (Swedish) name, is always gonna be Agneta just like it is said in Swedish, so they just sort of wing it a bit in English. They didn't expect anyone to care this much and study just how they speak. Don't bother with all of that, she said it correct and Björn did (in the clip from the car?), just focus on that and you will be too! (Don't worry about all the AI, Google and opinions on it, that will just mess with your head). You are very close and you will be close enough, don't fret! 💛💙 And the Swedish chef by the way is just funny, (has nothing to do with how we really speak and nobody is upset) I love the Muppets! By the way, Björn means bear in Swedish. I can see both him and Benny in the Muppets orchestra/band. 😊

@@popcornphilosopherI am listening once more to try to really understand. Since it's easy for us Swedes I almost don't bother listening to the butchering going on.😅 The blond news guy is getting her first name the closest and in my book totally ok for a non-swedish speaker. Though it"s more Ang-neeta. Fältskog with the Ä they don't get, but is to be expected since you don't have that letter. Dick Cavett is pretty close though. Yeah, Benny is saying Agnetta - not correct. Well, an artistic interpretation maybe. ;)

It's completely understandable to mispronounce names from other languages. The Latin alphabet is used differently in every language, and of course English speakers will pronounce a new name they've learned according to how it would sound with English pronunciation. It happens the other way around with non-English speakers, for example they almost uniformly pronounce E as 'ehh' despite how about half the time it's 'eah', TH is mispronounced 99% of the time, and silent letters are the bane of existence to any ESL student.

Nobody in Sweden will get offended by having their names weirdly pronounced by foreigners 😀 We swedes do it all the time when it comes to greek and chinese names and so on. It all evens out in the long run 😀 BUT (I cant help myself): there are no diphtongs in the swedish name Agnetha ( ang........neta) so "yeta" would never be used by a swede and the T IS pronounced just like a plain T no english "th"-sound going on. The H in Agnetha is just for decoration.

When Agnetha is telling her name in the beginning, that's how you say it when speaking Swedish. But when speaking English even Swedes sometimes Englishify their names when speaking English. In Swedish you never really pronounce the G in Agnetha so it's more of Angneta.

Angnijetta or Anjetta Faltskog with a slight stress on the last "a" , but the girls really didn't mind.. at one point they even tried to introduce Agnetha as Anna and Anni-Frid was Anna-Frid for a long time until everyone was aware it's simply Frida, her everyday name, but Anni-Frid seems to be her official one... but they don't really care that much... Björn has to live with the fact that merely no english native can pronounce his christian name correctly. the "ö" is to strange. So it's ending up being Bjoarn or Bjorn but never Björn. And Benny got the right international christian name to start with... ;-)

@@popcornphilosopher yep I am positive about that. Especially Agnetha’s name has a very distinct Swedish pronounciation that she would not expect foreigners to say it 100% correctly anyway… in some languages it’s merely impossible to pronounce Names of people or cities or even the countries in the respective native language correctly. Think of Irish names… or Arabic etc.. no they are completely relaxed about and on top they were known to have the Hybris to make big demands.. more down to earth and modest than abba is almost not possible. No star allures.
