My God, they were really struggling with the music back then. They play it SO much better now. But it is fabulous to see the original cast. The first thing I did when I came East to go to grad school was to take the bus from Philly into NYC to see AGON, a work which changed my whole way of thinking musically. One of the greatest of the Stravinsky/Balanchine collaborations.

Yep, good contemporaneous performances of genuinely new music are hard to come by, esp from orchestras. Prokofiev once remarked that if he writes a chamber or piano work then it gets performed by Oistrakh or Richer or Gilels or Rostropovich better than he could ever imagine. But if he writes for an orchestra, he has to deal with 70 oafs who give him vacant stares.
I've seen pictures of this in ballet books. It's a great to see it here, they are beautiful. Thank you so much.

I feel like I've been so spoiled by Balanchine's ballets I can hardly enjoy anyone else's.

Most striking, watching these lovely dancers, is that they make it look so difficult, so tense, so stressful. They're not having fun!

Was anyone more respected than Diana Adams? Balanchine never liked to be interfered with in matters of casting, but he always listened to Diana Adams' opinion. Cheers.

Too bad that she wasn't more consistent - often sick or injured.

George played with music, with every single notes, making revolutionary art in the choreography of ballet, making important page in cultural history. It must be appreciated, but few knows about George. His works ate still behind the wall even artist's origin country. It's sad

Finally a recording of The Diana Adams. The timing, the artistry the purity of her technique and the lady like presence!!!

John Clifford -- Just wondering what you thought of Darcey Bussell's performance of the Agon PDD at the (1993?) Balanchine gala. I"m no expert on Balachine style, but I thought she was pretty amazing.

Always loved Darcey. Just wish she had been better coached.
