Joel keeps insisting that he's unable to communicate, but from where I sit, he's an excellent communicator. What he lacks is confidence, and that likely stems from his lack of trust in virtually everyone. Hopefully he will find his person. Someone will make him feel safe and confident and be his best self. Chin up young person, and keep your eyes looking forward. Everyone one of us has a past that needs to stay a part of our history, not our present. All the best to you. He's talking about what he's dealing with. Just like how if he called a 1-800 number to "vent". It's not a therapist that would report him for supposedly being crazy or anything bad. He can just speak and vent which is just what he needs! He knows his story will get out there to help others. Even if you have agoraphobia.. you will find coping mechanisms and ways to get there and make it happen. Awkward social communications of course. I understand that. I always dreamed and dreamed of moving to Cincinnati, working a desk job, living in a big apartment building, and no one knows who I am. I just live my life with my cats and I'm good. People to leave me alone! This was thoughts from back in the late 80s early to mid 90s. I cried watching this. Took me back. Could take me back into it at any moment!

It’s interesting to me how I’m not seeing many comments about the relationships he had, and how it was almost glossed over in the interview - He was 14 (a child) dating a 34 year old. His parents signed over guardianship to her. If this was a young woman sharing this story, I feel like that would have been highlighted more. I can only imagine the ways that shaped his life. Those are formative years, and his guardian was also his romantic partner. I wish you the best for the future Joel, you have a good head on your shoulders.

I also observed that there was not much discussed about how he got into a intimate relationship with a 34 when he was only 14. I believe that this added to his issues around safety and security. There was no one there to point out how wrong this was or to keep him safe from ultimately a pedophile. In fact his family just handed him over to a child molester. I am so sorry that you had to experience the worst that society had had to offer at such a young age. Now everybody orders their stuff from the internet, kids stay in playing video games and basically everybody stays in the house on the internet. I had bad agoraphobia from 20-32...no therapy helped. Never turned to meds... Best thing I did is embrace the fear rather than fear the fear. Stopped avoiding fearful things (everything) and looked forward to being scared. Thus the fear lost its power over time. It still comes back and tests me from time to time, even 20 years later, but Im in control now. It was like standing up to a bully rather than avoiding confrontation. Bro, you need to face your fear and go out, let the fear wash over you and stand your ground. The fear will pass over you like wave. Pinch yr wrist hard to ground yourself. My aunt just passed at 87 and when l was in my 20s, l remember hearing how (out of nowhere) my uncle couldnt leave her alone in the house at any time. She could go to the store but not alone and he had to drive her. She was Dx with agorophobia. He worked and sometimes had to travel for his job. They had to find a live-in type of person and had several people through the years, nursing students and people that worked night shift. It was a deal for them, free rent and the only requirement was to stay with my aunt so she wasnt alone. My aunt cooked all the time, gardening and canning, was so motivated and busy. To this day l dont know where that problem came from. I have oftentime wondered if she always had it but it got worse when she stopped working + their kids grew up and moved out to be on their own.

There's nothing wrong with keeping to yourself. But what's missing is self love and acceptance. With these two things you will flourish even living a solitary life. Relationships for some of us are overrated. You sound like you've got everything you need to live a fulfilling life. Some of us live perfectly contented solitary lives. For myself, I've learned through books how to love myself and to accept life as it comes to me each day. A person's expectations can be the cause of unhappiness. When a person's experiences have brought them distrust in others it's not a bad thing. What's bad is thinking we should be in a relationship. That causes loneliness. Accepting our choices can free us. You seem like you really worked hard to get to the plateau you are on and it seems like if you loved your life the way it is now without the drugs and problems you have learned to avoid... You could appreciate more how valuable your life is right now. You have everything you need to be happy and content with what you have right now. Congratulations. You've come a long way. Live in that space and allow love and appreciation to join you in every moment.

I couldn’t even open the door to get packages off my porch sometimes. I’d just started feeling somewhat normal again with going out and then the pandemic happened 🙃 with therapy and healing I’m now able to go out and barely think twice about it. I think also going a year or so with my choice of going out being taken away and social distancing really shook something in me and ignited me to really appreciate the outside world and connecting with other people. A great thing about mental illness and recovery is if you really work hard you can overcome a lot of your demons and live a [somewhat] normal life :>

Joel, you’re such a likable person. You are interesting, compassionate, reflective. I find you to communicate well. I feel like building confidence and not having fear that situations will turn out like they have before are the areas of growth for you from the little I observed in this video. We all have areas to improve. Human connection is so important. I don’t live in New York but understand what you mean about society. So much about this country is not acknowledging the humanity in each of us. Just know that you are worthy. You have so much to offer. You are loved. Not having support is so very hard, and some people don’t understand how that feels, how alone and isolating that is. You’re really tough to be who you are today. I hope you are proud of who you are because good character matters so much. Thank you for sharing your experiences in life. Much peace and love.

When Mark told him he’s communicating well with him right now & he replied that he has to because he wants the video to be good & help people, I felt that. He did a great job!

Thank you so much to Joel for sharing his story. I too struggle with agoraphobia and have worked full-time since the age of 16 including the last 12 years since my diagnosis. FMLA has protected me and my job. Meds and therapy can really help. After that gets going it's easier to take those baby steps to start to feel more comfortable outside and among people. It is possible. I'm living proof. Thank you again to Joel and the Underbelly group.

Joel, you are an amazing young man, you’re a better communicator then you give yourself credit for! A dog is a wonderful companion, I’m 71 and have had dogs all my life, dog spells God backwards. There are great online church groups that you could reach out to that would love to hear your story because several of them are lonely too. God bless you!!!!!

My friend you absolutely have the talent. And I know it’s hard for you to believe that you can communicate well, but trust me what the outside world sees is a man that is exceptional with communicating. Never stop trying because YOU have an ABSOLUTE TON OF GREATNESS to offer the world. You are amazing.

This man is so articulate. And when he was on the topic of people not being seen as individuals but as numbers... That was so on point and intelligent. I really wish the best for you Joel.

I really feel bad for that dude. I was blessed to grow up on the water by the coast, and in the country where I could play all over the place. Anywhere I want it without any worries. I couldn’t imagine growing up like he did. Hang in there bro
